why are these not coming down in price?

Its the top of the line processor (I think) for socket 604. You're better off stepping up to dual core xeons. maybe even a quad core with a 775 board would be sufficient.

What do you need the rig for?

Yup, its the super God Dammit for 604 processors. They also have a 3.6 with only 1mb of L2 cache.

well i have an old system neediing one more processor (2mb cache) id like to upgrade and keep it around for a while.. but they just arnt getting cheaper

No, I think your right. I wanted to get the 3.6 (1meg) variety. The problem is that it isn't cost effective. Especially when you look at all the other stuff you could buy with the money. It actually leaves me questioning the whole market.

Is this representative of an overpriced xeon platform? After all, the xeons are more for business application which might justify on the Intel side a higher cost.

Are we loosing the benefit of an upgrade due to whorish prices on new tech? Is there even an upgrade path or are we in an upgrade amazonian type forest?

Heh, I want the CEO to answer that one. Maybe I'll send him an email letting him know they misnamed the chips. They should have been called the "Congos!" or "The Tarazans Only Hope Chips!" or the "You Die Of Malaria Before You Upgrade Chips." Yes! You too can own MALARIA! "I have a malaria system are you jealous? Why yes, I am, I still have the older Chlamydia chips! Thank you INTEL!"

Are we talking about disposable pcs? I think for the processors I wanted I saw them new for $800? What would you buy for $800? Btw, I don't really know how you would get Chlamydia in the jungle, but please appreciate the fact that I Googled it to get the spelling right for you guys. It's a funny word :D

exactly.. i pay 800 to upgrade an old system or i pay 1600 for something new . i wish id have known a year ago these thinbgs wouldnt drop in price cause i put off buying it for nothing.

look at pricewatch.com they are as low as $375
