Hello,

I have red x850 Pro 256MB card - P/N 102A4750501 made in china also on front
PN 109-A47501-00ATI card. The memory is Samsung 504 K4J553230F-GC16. It
displays the BIOS screen but goes black immediately when going to XP Media
or Vista install. It does display and run Windows XP Pro SP2 no problem though. This unit will start the install of either of the other two but will go black very
quickly. Not sure if there is a firmware update I can get or a work around
short of using the VGA adapter (my monitor only has DVI input and the VGA to
DVI converter doesn't work for some reason). I am running an MSI Neo2 P965
motherboard - latest bios 2.5. I can install the OS using other cards on the
same system - I tried switching back to this card after installing the OS
and it goes back to black during boot and stays black.

I have no problem with another ATI card I have so I think it may be limited to just some versions of the ATI card. I posted on the MS Vista newsgroup and another person they have the same issue with this specfic card. Although I don't need a list of what cards work, I am curious if there is a firmware update for this specific card to resolve the issue as I have no desire to replace this card for at least 5 months.

Is there a firmware update? Is there a way to get ATI to exchange it? I've sent an e-mail to ATI - I got the canned response a couple of days ago, I replied that wasn't the solution - haven't gotten a real response from ATI as of yet.

Sent them a support ticket on Saturday, still haven't heard back yet.

I hope he means the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum, as the 965 series of chipsets is for PCI-Express and not AGP. But then again, we already knew that... didn't we? :D

If that's the case, there's no surprise there. Read yesterday's news, regarding the inability to run a Radeon with nForce3 chipsets. That at least answers the Vista part.

My bad - I meant to say 865 chipset. I even downloaded the latest intel drivers using a working agp card - put the 850 pro back in - still goes black immediately upon loading windows.

ATI won't bother to check this - they said send them back my card, they'll send me a replacement - I'm out the time without my card - and I'm pretty sure it is with the card design, not my card as other users on other forums are reporting the same issue.

Heaven forbid they actually take 2 minutes to put an 850 AGP card into a system running vista and test!

Very very dissappointed.

No it doesn't, as I ran my 9700 Pro on my Neo2 Platinum for 6 months before transitioning to PCI Express. Bare in mind that he was running XP before trying to get Vista working on his setup. In my experience, it is Nvidia that is doing a suck-ass job on Vista support as of right now therefore, they should be blamed for the problem. I don't believe in the ATi/nForce chipset bullcrap that's been going on for years. Turn off the damn PCI-E overclocking crap in the BIOS and the cards work fine.

If the X850 is an AIW card, than I can see the problem being with ATi as their older AIW cards did not support MPEG-2.
