A game to beat the lull...

I seem to be in a gaming lull right now. It seems my genre's of gaming just aren't exciting right now... (FPS, action,RTS) What I want is a 'fun' type pc game like a nice 3D pinball, 'rack up a bunch of points' type game...reminiscent of arcade style like Gradius or 1942 or something... does a modern version of this type of game exist..





 
I understand what you mean. Unfortunately, I can't think of something. There are so many.
 
You could try Tyrian, it's an overhead shooter like 1942, but you can buy upgrades with the money you get.
 
Do a google search for Tyrian abandonware and it's called Tyrian 2000 I believe.
 
ahh tyrian. Such memories of wasting my youth away on the old 386. and the foodship-9 with banana blasters >:3

Unfortunately, not that I can think of. "Shmups" have always been my favorite genre, although nowadays it's not a genre but a niche. Nowadays a game has to be all about eye candy. Shrug.

Shmups...the original twitch game.
 
I know it's not PC, but Heavy Weapons on the 360 is addictive and amazingly fun with 4 friends over.. not sure if there is a PC equivalent or not.
 
If you havent played it yet, i highly recommned condemned: criminal origins. Its really not like any other shooter, it has some of the best atmosphere out of any game, and itll scare the crap out of you. :)

I have F.E.A.R. and have ended F.E.A.R. and the expansion Extraction Point. I don't like gaming online that much because some kid is always hacking. I like stellar single player gaming. Hopefully Quake Wars will change my mind.

I've played it. Couldn't really get into it.
 
wtf happened to the free game sticky? that had a ton of stuff you could play.
 
I tried to play Tyrian 2000 on Vista

It didnt work :(

It starts up a command prompt then just freezes.
 
Look for mods for the games you already have. There's enough of them to keep you busy for some time. How about something like Xcalon mod, a 2d space shoot'em up for Unreal 2004.

That sounds kind of cool. I only have UT Game of the Year Edition.



 
dunno what you're really into but i'll throw this out there, Supreme Commander. its comin out on the 20th so you migh wanna look out for that, mind you its not a "casual" game. takes up a lot of time.
 
SERIOUS SAM 2!! it's super fun for the first 10 minutes or so! i'm not kidding. give the demo a try.
 
If your looking for strangly addicting PC 1P FPS games, System shock 2 is the way to go. Cant find it in stores, so on to bitcomit you must go.

The origonal System Shock isnt bad either, but not as good as 2 (IMHO).

Dues EX is another, I was never a huge fan but the small fanbase it has claim its better then crack. I played a little bit of it, It was fun but, I couldnt find it again, and I was never bothered enough to go download it again.

hmmm. I think this post has made me interested enough to go download it now.... lol.

Ohhh man, Blitz 1941!! --er, no, public betas over, can't find it anywhere.
 
I got in a lull and, played some of the more off gmaes like Panty Raiders. It was a good funny ass game. I just try something I havent ever thought of trying is how I got through it.
 
Have you ever looked into emulation? MAME is the ultimate way to kill time with mindless fun games.
 
Very good help and ideas with the suggestions... I picked up a game called "Pure Pinball Reloaded" from eGames. This has to be the best looking PC pinball game ever made ..very authentic and natural looking.

Still looking for a scrolling shooter like 1942, Gradius,..etc..





 
for mindless mental fun you probably want a game like painkillers singleplayer.

Another good way to beat game lulls is with mods, theres some stella mods coming out for HL2 now, there's 2-3 really good coop ones which are largely mindless shooting as well.

Look for Obsidian Conflict and Synergy.
