Imagine that, most of the software sold on Latin American streets is counterfeit and cheap. While buying Vista Ultimate for under $10 may sound like a bargain, a fat lot of good it will do you when it doesn’t work.

In Latin America's other mega city, Sao Paulo, illegal sellers crammed the sidewalk of the Rua Santa Efigenia, the one-stop shop for all things computer, hawking Vista's "Ultimate" edition in Portuguese for just 15 reais ($7.20).

Surprised? Also, quickly looking at normal sources it would appear that Vista is already cracked except for maybe validating.

You are sure they won't be able to use it?

Really.

Must be just me then...

The cracks are pretty ghetto. And get more ghetto if you have updates on. Not really worth the download anyway for a new XP skin.

right now yes.. vista is just a new skin imo.. but that will change when DX10 games start becoming avail.. mmm crysis..

Maybe if it wasn't so darn expensive in the first place then less people would be inclined to pirate it.

nice analogy :D

Round-trip ticket for 1 person to Sao Paulo, Brazil: $3,000
Taxi cab ride from airport to street vendor then back to airport: $50
Pirated Copy of Windows Vista Ultimate: $10
Sticking it to Bill Gates: Priceless

In a third-world developing country it shouldn't cost much more than 20 bucks to buy an O.S. if you want market share. In America it shouldn't cost $399 for an O.S. either but Americans are pretty good at bending over and lubing up. Look at Iraq.:D

I think Microsoft settled all of their antitrust suits without admitting fault.

I wish my dad did that for me :D :D

Heard the same thing awhile back. Some ppl from TomsHardware reported purchasing Vista Ultimate from Thailand for $10 or so and it worked...However the workaround was weird.

Folks,

I live in Brazil, in Sao Paulo.

The history that pirated copies are full of viruses and doesn't work are miths. They are the same software every one in the world can download via torrent or other P2P networks and they work prety well.

I used then in the past and never got a virus. Now with broadband Internet, even 7 bucks for a Vista is too expensive.

It doesn't make sense in a country like mine to pay R$ 1.000,00 (US$ 500,00) for a copy of Vista Ultimate. The minimum wage here is around US$ 150,00 a month. The software is more expensive than the computer itself sometimes.

And with Office 2007 is worst because it is much more expensive than Vista.

Without Vista and Office 2007, Microsoft already sold more than US$ 23 billion worth of Windows and Office software, so I think they could cut some slack on the poorer countries.

They make Vista Starter for you folks. I don't think you need ultimate nor to worry about em if you're pulling in 150 a month.

On another note, I don't see why this is making news. They tend to go after torrent sites and all these downloading sites, but they seem to fail to forget that you can buy this crap in just about every China town here in the US. This is just a prime example of the government doing nothing over vendors making a ton of money stealing and selling software... but then hunting down those who makes it freely availible with no rewards attached.

Starter Edition is to be sold only with a new computer. If you already have one, you are out of luck!

Basic then. Still a ton cheaper than Ultimate.

Those prices are really high. I think the story doesn't have the right numbers...

I live in Venezuela. Here, a pirated CD costs about Bs. 2000/ 2500 each (about 1$) and even less; each DVD is about Bs. 5000 (about 2$), and if you get more than three you get a discount... the pirated Vista versions that you can find are more expensive, like 4$ or even 5$ because of the novelty... free market in action they say...

10$ for an OS? nah, nobody would buy it...

With Office you won't even need to go illegal - you can download Openoffice.org for free.

I'm still on Office 97, because it was free to me. :)

Can't see upgrading to Vista before Service Pack One or so.

It stopped being worth it to go through work arounds and new work arounds every other week and security updates and all that garbage a long time ago.

My time and energy are worth far more than buying Vista at this point and not having to worry about it later.

I agree,

Same here, I can't justify the value of my free time to get an OS to work every time a patch comes out and having to always duck when another new patch comes around. I just buy the legit thing outright and enjoy it from day one, without having to wait for something to materialize.

Imagine what would happen if a pirated version of Vista came with DX10 that worked on DX9 cards. :D
