I know this doesn't sound like an audio question, but bear with me.

I'd like to get an HDMI to DVI cable to connect my hdtv cable box to my sony xbr 910 television. My question is, if HDMI carries both video and audio, how will I get the audio to my tv? I was under the impression that DVI was video only, so if I convert from HDMI to DVI, where does the sound go? Can I just hook up an optical cable, or the old red/whites? I looked at a couple of HDMI->DVI cables, and didn't see any sound connectors on the DVI end (which is what I had expected), so I am stumped.

Sorry for the ignorant question, but I'll continue to be ignorant if I don't ask!

Thanks.

It depends on the source. For instance, I know someone who uses an HDMI to DVI cable for their PS3. There is a setting which tells the PS3 to output audio via optical when using HDMI. My cable box on the other hand outputs audio 3 different ways at the same time - via HDMI, SPDIF (optical & coax), and analog (via red/white rca).

So it sounds like I would be able to run the hdmi-dvi and an optical cable? Anyone else?

HDMI->DVI cables are just simple adaptors and cannot extract the audio without extra electronics.

Most devices will output audio through optical or stereo-rca along with the HDMI/DVI signal at the same time anyways. Others may require you to adjust an option in the setup menu.

Ok, I guess that solves it then; I can use an optical cable for the audio portion. Excellent, thx all.
