Sceptre x22wg-Gamer 22" LCD

monitors look good. gaming is great, with a few minor brightness adjustments, they look very good. the one thing i had trouble with was the new nvidia drivers, where you have to create your own timings profile for the monitors to display the correct native resolution. other than that, no problems here.

I just took my sceptre back this morning :( (only had it since last friday) due to the control buttons not responding. I did contact sceptre and they advised that the control panel was faulty as described by me to them. I now have ordered another as I do love it, just an unfortunate incident. Costco was fantastic asusual about it and I was out of the store in literally 10 minutes.

For those saying that the colors are great, can you please let me know how the dark grays or blacks look. Would the Spyder2 be able to fix darks scenes such as this? This is a dark cave in Oblivion and I just can't get it to look realistic. Notice the greens and reds? Those don't belong there.

Been tweeking levels for over a week now. I agree nice bright colors look great, but these dark areas just seem unnatural and there's so much twinkling (dithering?).

Also does anyone have this "blocky disturbance" during video playback? I think it's called artifacts? I notice this during movies also.

Thanks

I've taken a few pics of Oblivion on my monitor for you to compare with. I also posted my OSD settings on the previous page. I'm running the game at 1680x1050 res and mostly all high settings, but no FSAA.

My camera's not all that great, and it looks much better in person, but you can get the idea. I think it looks pretty good for an LCD. Definitely not as good as it did on my old 17" CRT, but it's acceptable, IMO.

Also no, I dont get those "artifacts" during video playback. I hope this helps you figure out what's wrong.

Thanks to both for the pictures! It's nice to make a camparison. I think with the same adjustments to color I'm getting similar scenes (although I wish my hardware could handle 1680x1050 with Oblivion!). Even the comment that your CRT looked better lets me know that I don't have a bum monitor that might need to be exchanged.

As far as taking pictures, chicago312, there might be some info in the Help forum, but other than that just set up a tripod or a pile of boxes on a chair like I do and keep it as steady as possible.

If anyone can help with the video artifacting it would be greatly appreciated! It's so blurry and "pixelated". It's both game movies and DVD movies right from the computer.

Oh, one more thing for ppl following this thread. If you have one of those lamps that turns on just by touching a part of it, this monitor likes to turn it on whenever it wakes up from sleep mode!

Thanks again.

Hey guys, I got this monitor a few days ago as an early birthday present and for the most part I love it. Got it from costco in a day and no dead pixels so I am happy. Just a few questions... Previously I used a Samsung 955df and I guess I got used to the dimness of that monitor because my Sceptre is blindingly bright with white backgrounds. I already adjusted the lamp and contrast but it is still quite bright. Also what drivers are you guys using? I downloaded the ones off sceptres site and my monitor is now being identified as a 'komodo 40,' which is from sceptres lcd tv line I believe. Any help would be greatly appreciated =]

I'm doing this from memory so I hope it's correct...

Go here:
ftp://ftp.sceptre.com/pub/monlcd/sceptre.inf

Select all and copy to notepad and rename with a .inf extension.

Save to a directory on your computer.

(now here's the part that I'm guessing on)

Go to device manager, expand 'monitor' and hit the update driver button.

Select specify location or "have disk"

Browse to where you saved the .inf file and you then should be able to pick the x22wg-Gamer from a long list of Sceptre products.

Has anyone following this thread tried out the Samsung 225BW or Acer AL2216Wbd? They all fall in the same price range, well, except for the Samsung, which is running close to $370, significantly more than it's competitors. Which do you recommend I go for?

And about picture quality - I'm coming from a Viewsonic VP171b and an Acer AL1916. Will the picture quality be better, worse, or around the same level, should I go for the Sceptre or similar? I'm getting a lot of mixed feelings here, though the general consensus seems to be that's it's a great value.

Thanks.

When you guys are referring to OSD settings are these on the actual monitor or on the computer. I have my PS3 hooked up via HDMI and I dont have the same setting options. Under video I have contrast, brightness, sharpness, color, tint, recall. Under advanced I have vivid color, skin tone, green, blue, gamma, and recall. And the green and blue have only low, high, etc. You can input numbers like the settings some people are posting. How do I go about calibrating my monitor for my PS3? Can someone post settings that I can use. Thanks

I went with this Sceptre because of the extra features it offered that most 22" displays in this price range dont--mainly the HDMI and built in USB hub. Besides that, if you're looking for suggestions, I'd strongly suggest seeing the actual monitor in person before you buy it. It does have it's negatives that I'm not sure that Samsung and Acer have. For example the poor vertical angle viewing and slight backlight bleed. Although, I hear most 22" panels are the same. Still, I strongly recommend checking out LCDs in person before buying.

OSD stands for "on screen display" menu. It refers to the menu that pops up when you press the actual menu button on the back on the monitor. And yeah each input has different options. Read your manual for more details.

Liked the first one so much that I bought a 2nd one. Calibrated them using the older SpyderPro (same hardware as Spyder2, but the older professional software). The picture is fantastic and this camera shot doesnt do it justice.

Hi Guys,

In the OSD menu, the "format" option is locked, i cant get into it to change my resolution. Anyone kno why its not letting me? Currently I am running my xbox via Neoya VGA converter to this monitor. http://www.x2vga.com/

What is happening right now is if i set this monitor to native, it gives me a crystal clear picture but is only about 5" by 7" in the middle of the screen. I understand that xbox only carries a 480p signal, but there has to be a way to this image to fit screen. If i put it on aspect its not nearly as clear. can anyone help??? thanks

i just got my x22wg RMAed from newegg.com . Due to my horrible luck (having to pay for the returning the DOA item, and there seems to be a price drop on the monitor now making it US$ 299.00 after rebates .. i would have ended up paying...

The replacement works on HDMI with a ps3. I have not tested DVI / VGA yet. Although, i am unable to use the DVI-HDMI cable that i bought off newegg with the monitor. Has anyone had success using the DVI-HDMI cable on this with a PS3 ? ( I dont seem to have a DVI source available to check the DVI inputs...
Does the PS3 require HDCP compliance from the HDMI port? Will i be able to use a DVI / HDMI cable for this? I seem to remember reading that people do use DVI/HDMI wiht the PS3...

Im trying to figure out if the DVI on my replacement is broken as well, or if it is just the cable that messed me up! It could be a faulty cable as well?

TTA

Okay, thats what I thought. Can someone post up there HDMI settings so I can compare. Thanks

I don't get it. Why would anyone want to use HDMI --> DVI on their PS3? Isn't HDMI the much better connection w/ audio?

I ordered this monitor from Newegg... I was so excited about the HDMI and the contrast ratio... and naturally, the 22" widescreen massiveness.. :)

When I hooked up the monitor to my laptop (via VGA out) I noticed that the colors were off. Ok, so I adjusted using a few tools I found online. But I noticed, even after color adjustment, that the monitor was blurry.

I posted earlier on this, but no one has responded...

I tested a Viewsonic VX2235wm next to it (22" 1680x1050 700:1 contrast ratio) and the Viewsonic is MUCH MUCH MUCH crisper picture. My question is:

Has anyone else experienced a blurry picture?
Is it just the VGA to digital converter in the monitor itself?
I know it isn't the cord I have, as the Viewsonic looks great using the cord.

I just like the Sceptre ... the thin bezel, the great onscreen setup, HDMI, better contrast, brighter screen.

But damn blurry, damn it! HELP!

(ps... yes I downloaded the sceptre.inf and installed it... it didn't help)

Is this just a faulty monitor?

diznanl, my x22wg-Gamer isnt blurry at all. It's actually very crisp and sharp! And that's on both VGA or DVI.

I cant confirm your monitor's faulty (though it may be), but what I can say is if you are not satisfied with it after many attempts at calibrating, you may want to just return it and get something else.

Hi everyone. Just got my Sceptre and am very pleased with it. I suppose that switching from my 19" trinitron may take some getting used to, but I needed to take the plunge into LCD. Happy to report that I got no dead pixels on my panel.

Quick question about monitor drivers. how important are these and what exactly will it do for my monitor?

Also, I tried to use that Nokia monitor test program, however all of the text read NONE. dunno if the program is bad or what. I like my picture and color that Im getting now, however I would like to use a optimizer program. Other than the Nokia, what other free one exist?

Thanks

I returned my x22wg

I, again, had my roommate check it out, and myself. I reinstalled the monitor and video adapter driver. Darn it... it just is too damn fuzzy

I ordered another one, because I believe in hope. I believe in freedom. :p

I hope it looks better than the vx2235wg

All of these 22" TN panels are made by the same manufacturer (CMO). They all have the same viewing angle and light bleed issues, but are nonetheless an amazing deal for the money. As for seeing them in a store before buying, I disagree. Every store I've been in has 30+ different LCD monitors of various sizes and resolutions all hooked up to the same computer and lame graphics card - none of which are set at a 22-incher's native resolution of 1680 x 1050. And all the 22-inchers look worse because of it. Since the Sceptre x22wg is not available anywhere but online...an in-person comparison of that one is going to be pretty difficult.

What to do? Get your Sceptre 22" from Costco online. They just extended the rebate deal to February 28th making it $299.99. And if FOR ANY REASON you don't like it, just take it back to any Costco warehouse for a full refund - including what you paid for shipping. Some have returned theirs for a full refund AND still gotten their rebate check. Score!

Picture blurry? Take it back. One stuck pixel? Take it back. I honestly don't know why anyone buys monitors from Newegg, Tiger, or anyone else. All of their 6-8 dead pixel policies are for the birds. For monitors, Costco ROCKS.

Here, here! After making the mistake of buying a monitor at Newegg, I am returning it. I'm eating both shipping AND a restocking fee. I immediately went and purchased the EXACT same monitor off Costo.com... again, so I can make sure I just didn't geta dud. I REALLY hope it's way better than the blurry monstrosity I got from Newegg.

Go Costco! :p

Well, he maybe he knows someone that owns this monitor and can check out there's. ;)

As for Newegg, yeah, it's the last time I'll buy a monitor from them. My first one had to be RMA'd and they dont compensate for shipping charges, bastards. I'll just buy mine in a store or from Costco online from now on.

ok, so i somewhat skimmed thru some of this thread. I see that costco sells both the Sceptre x22wg gamer and the Viewsonic VX2235 for $299. Now, i love to play games and watch movies on my monitors. Do they both run HD? Which would be better?

So i take it that CeiMei is the maker of the actual LCDs and all the major brands use it. SO picture quality will be the same on all of them? What is good/bad about ceimie?

Yes, the maker of the 22" TN panel (CMO) also makes their own brand of monitor called the Chimei 22ID.

I don't know that picture quality is perfectly identical with all of the growing number of 22"-based LCD monitors out there, though (close to 30 brands now). If you study their specs they do all differ somewhat. But they all do have the viewing angle and light-bleed challenges which are inherent to TN panels, though much improved over such panels produced just a couple of years ago.

The Viewsonic displays HD through its DVI port. I personally dislike its wide and shiny bezel that shows every fingerprint and reflects glare onto the screen. The Sceptre's bezel is matte finished and very narrow. I love having three graphics ports including HDMI. I can use the DVI for the desktop and not have to fool with switching cables just to watch a DVD. But either monitor from Costco can go back if you don't like it.

Do they not all support HD through their DVI ports? Or just the Viewsonic?... I was under the impression they did all support this feature.

My new Sceptre from Costco should arrive on the 6th...!

So what is the difference between DVI and HDMI? DVI is digital, HDMI is liek HD-only, and analog is just plain analog right? What are the pros, cons, and uses of each.

I'm not an expert but... HDMI is both HD video and HD sound. I believe its the only way to get uncompressed 7.1 sound. DVI is only video, same quality as HDMI but does not have the same bandwidth. Once HDMI 1.3 comes out, it will be able to display a ton more colors and better sound.

HDMI is hardware yes? So i assume that all monitors are at most 1.2 and i would have to buy somethign new for 1.3?

I think right now most displays are 1.1, 1.2. Ones that support HDMI 1.3 aren't even out yet. Though we'll see some later this year. And I think the only consumer electronic out right now that can use 1.3 is the PS3 at the moment. But as of right now DVI = HDMI video quality wise.

If you have products such as a PS3 you're going to need a display that supports 1.3 if you want to take full advantages of 1.3. Whether or not there's going to be software that actually takes advantage of it is another question. Also I personally haven't seen 1.3 in action so I can't really say if it'll be worth it or not. I believe this new version will be more for the audiophiles as they are adding more lossless audio formats, i.e. Dolby TrueDH and DTS-HD Master Audio. But then again color depths will be bumped up from 24-bit up to 48-bit so I'm kind of excited how much change that will bring.

Edit: You won't have to buy anything if your monitor doesn't support 1.3. You just won't get the advantages of what 1.3 brings to the table. Hence why a lot of people are holding off buying new HDTVs. Again I don't know how big of a deal 1.3 is but I guess we'll see.

I wasn't sure if i should make a new thread about this but I'd like to know how costoc.com shipping is. On the site it says 10-15 days and that seems extreme as hell and is putting me off, does it really take that long? can you guys who ordered from there give me a lil input about the shipping. Thanks

well the UPS man FINALLY brought the monitor at 5:30pm(freakin ridiculous) and Im happy to say this second one has NO dead pixels! Also this one appears to have much less bleed than the previous one. Absolutely pleased :p Hope everyone else gettin theirs from here on out get equal or better. Xbox360 time! woot

JyuOH, I ordered mine on Sunday afternoon(it comes from Ontario, CA.) was shipped out Monday. Arrived here in Ohio at my door this evening. Hope that helps you figure your time frame. :)

I got mine from Costco online. Ordered Tuesday and got monitor Thursday before going to work. I'm running the HDMI input and it rocks. I also used the spyder2 calibration kit for it and it did make a huge difference. Thinking of ordering second one just for kicks for dual set-up. Ordered 3 DVI to HDMI cables for about $34 shipped. Very very nice cables. All in all its a great monitor and I did like the Viewsonic 22", but i hated the bezel at the bottom way too wide. For $299 its well worth the money. And Costco's return policy is just way to sweet to pass-up.:D

Not all 22" monitors out now will display HD through their DVI ports. The 22" X2Gen (selling online for $249.99 from Costco) reportedly does NOT do HD and neither do the earlier 22" Acer models. But check the specs - I believe the 22" Viewsonic's HD capabilities are limited to a maximum of 720p. Other 22-inchers likely differ in max res, too. Not only does my 22" Sceptre handle 1080p, but I can use either the DVI or HDMI ports as HD inputs. If you are already using your Sceptre's DVI port to connect to your desktop (like I am), having the HDMI for a DVD player or other HD device is just way convenient !

BTW: nobody should rely on the freebee cables that come with the Sceptre. The cheap unshielded and shoddy DVI cables Sceptre has been throwing in the box alone have dropped its rating on Newegg's site.

ok just got on this morning and fired this up and the monitor appears to have a thin blue line on the right of the screen from top to bottom. It is in the location of the red "X" at top down to bottom where you see clock in task bar. It wasnt there last night. Im running native res of 1680x1050 for desktop at 60hz. Any idea why its there or how to correct it?

edit: ok now it disappeared. It comes and goes, have no clue why its doing it.

I just bought this moniter, can someone help me out.

DVI to DVI on my PC to MONITER, work fine. Crisp, Clean, Picture, Perfect.

HDMI to DVI on my MONITER to PC, does not work fine. The colors are soo far funky its scary. It looks like the color depth is shitty, and lots of artifics (however you spell).

Also DVI to DVI doesn't give me a HDCP option, Cyberlink HD Advisor reports it as no HDCP.

However on the HDMI to DVI even thoe its screwed up, reports it as being HDCP only if I boot the computer up first using HDMI does it say HDCP 1080P and overscan issues. When I boot up using HDMI and then turn off the moniter, standby or changes sources. The overscan goes away, colors all change however its still really blurry, and instead of HDCP 1080P, it says DVI AL.

Reading most it not all the posts, I guess I have to conclude the factory defaults for the color are fubar on the HDMI? The DVI doesn't allow for HDCP.

Why when using the HDMI to DVI on my PC to computer is the, colors soo screwed, the image soo blurry, and the image being overscanned?

Here are my settings, setup.

HDMI TO DVI
8800GTS
Moniter is setup on AUTO for Format, and ASPECT is native.
So 1680x1050.

Any help?

A 22 inch monitor like yours can't support 1080p native. Should've waited for the x24wg-naga which will be able to support it. That may be the cause of your dilemma, but I'm not too sure.

now im seeing 3 red lines on the very far right side of the screen top to bottom. I only have the one dvi cable so i cant really unplug it and test with another one. And i hate to buy another one when i dont even know if that is whats wrong with it. Appreciate any ideas.

Yeah I could have waited and I knew it was going to come out, however it was just to expensive for me at this time. Anyone have any idea to my HDMI problems, in regards to it being very blurry, colors screwed up, and depth or pixalation?

Are you using the DVI cable that came with the monitor? People have had problems with those as some are faulty from the manufacturer. Do you get the same lines/display problems using a VGA connection? If the screen is giving the same screw-ups in the display using VGA then return the monitor for a replacement. If not, I would try a replacement DVI cable.

yes im using the same dvi that came with it. I just tried the xbox on the vga and it still has the 3 red lines on the right. Damn, this pisses me off, this would be the second return. I only had the first one a week, and ive only just gotten this second one friday.

I took a screenshot of the desktop in hopes it would capture the lines to show what i mean. But for some reason it doesnt capture the lines in the desktop. Would that mean its in the hardware? or ?
