Ive got a dell 9300 with a sony 8X dvd-rw in it. For some reason I cant burn dvd's. It will read dvd's and play them, however when I put a blank one in there and drag a file over to the drive it gives me an error saying "we've encountered a problem... blah blah blah, retry or cancel". And with my burning software it doesnt even give me the option to choose dvd. Cd-R's work just fine, i can drag and drop and it works like it should. Any help would be great, ive tried downloading and installing the drivers numerous times, have even tried every single driver on the dell site for dvd-rw's and have gotten no where.

Also with a blank dvd in the drive it shows "dvd-r" but when i click properties it says there is no free space available...

please help... Thanks

its the sony DVD+- DW-D56A

and nero just at the wizard does not give you the option to select "dvd" it only has the option of selecting a "cd". Also in options with nero it says the device can support media types "dvd, cd-r/rw" no dvd-r or anything......

You either need to update nero to a newer version, or use other burning software. It sounds like you've got an older oem copy of nero which doesn't burn dvds.

Windows explorer has never been able to drag'n'drop and burn to dvdrs, it only does cdr and cdrw.

it has nothing to do wtih nero, it doesn't even recognize a blank dvd-r when i put it in, regardless of any burning software i use... and ive downloaded the latest drivers from dell... im out of ideas.

Try reinstalling the original software by using your Dell reinstall disk and opting for the non destructive reinstallation, it will just replace what's missing. I had the same problem with my E-Machine laptop

Have you tried a different version of nero, or not? Older versions, and even some newer oem versions of nero do not have any capability to write to dvds at all. Even if you don't have a dvd writer in the system, the latest versions of nero will let you create a dvd compilation and save it to the Imager Recorder as an .iso or .nrg file.

he says its not nero... but he wont tell us what version he has... FTW

as for a firmware update for it
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...1&vercnt=1&formatcnt=1&libid=32&fileid=134618

b/c next to no disc media drives have drivers except dvd-ram drives
and proprietary crap...

i would try "other" dvdrw programs to test and see

also - i would check for different media - b/c drives ARE PICKY AS H3LL
Taiyo Yuden's are the best, but not the most findable
verbatims are pretty much the best that you can get anywhere...

I've downloaded that firmware and updated and still no luck. The version of nero I have (I dont know why it matters because all burning software I have is not allowing me to select a blank dvd to burn, but it's 5.5.9.16). I've also tried different dvd-r's, as in different makes and still wont work.......... I'm outta ideas.

5.5 is pretty much ancient. I'm guessing it's oem software as well (it came with a drive). Try downloading either nero 6 or 7 trial version and then come back and let us know how it worked.

nero 5 has support for dvd+/-r/rw's ?

oh well

yea - id try (even a demo version) of nero 6
just download it from the site - it should allow you to burn @ 1x to a dvd+/-r/rw in demo mode

you could also try other free 3rd party burning software
CDBurnerXP Pro
Infra Recorder
or paid software that costs money, and has a demo
clonedvd
alcohol 120%
etc
