Im sure this ? is repeated time and time again but everyday new things come out.

Right now im using 2 Viewsonic P815 21" CRTs. Been using them for past 7 or 8 years. They still run great. Company is giving me 1500 to buy new LCDs. I run them at 1280x1024 so that im able to get the 85hz refresh.

Looking for something comparable in size and resolution. Could be a 1 monitor solution or 2.

Also need to know what video card will drive these "new LCDs" using a NVidia 6800gs right now.

thx alot :)

I would go with two monitors if that is what you have been using for 7+ years.
Even though 30" is super huge, it just does not compete with two 24" when doing
work/gaming.

Since you are used to a dual display setup I would also say two 24" monitors, but if it was me with $1500 to spend I would go for the 3007wfp-hc.

On that note i was just on dells website have a look, the 2407WFPs are 675 each and i still need a vid card to drive them. Leaves me only 150 dollars for vid? Or are them some discounts to be had?

and what about the E228WFP 22-inch they are only 329 each could have 3 at that price plus sli vid no all for under 1500?

I don't think SLI is compatible with dual or more displays. At least thats what I read somewhere, could be wrong.

There's always maxtor's triplehead2go for driving three monitors. $1k for three 22" monitors would give you a fair amount to work with on hardware to drive them.

A 24" and 1 or maybe 2x 20-21" (4:3) is what i would take. 2x 24" would get a bit too expensive i think.

forgot to mention that im using a AGP motherboard, so the video card to run these monitors must be AGP

You haven't mentioned what these are used for. Will they be for photos, autocad, text, video? Is the environment bad for glossy panels? Do you have wall mount for the duals or do you use the monitors on their stands? Will other people be using these and be needing to adjust monitors? Will they be calibrated or used at default? Some panels need a bit more TLC but make a better rendering.

I would get a Westy 37" and maybe have enough left over for a 800GTS or GTX

In that case.. get a 24" and spend some money on a upgrade ;)

I had just struggled with this question and I have your answer.

I see that your main use is definitely gaming...

If you have tons of money (enough to afford dual 8800gtx sli) then go for the new Dell 30" screen... if you don't have tons of money to continually blow no upgrades, get a Westinghouse 37".

I just recieved the Westinghouse 37" a few days ago after trying out 30"ers and 2x24" setup and I have to say if gaming/desktop apps is your main focus you can't do better than this beast.

It's the best upgrade I have ever made in 15 years of computing... seriously.

It runs at 1920x1080.

Look in the dell outlet. The monitors are fully covered by Dell's warranty. The 3007fpw I just got at work looked like it was brand new...and was $225 cheaper than the non-outlet monitor.

I would just like to point out that Matrox's, not Maxtor's, TripleHead2Go supports only up to 19" monitors, non-widescreen. The maximum resolution for each display sent out with TH2Go is 1280x1024, thus the maximum resolution altogether is 3840x3072.
Technically you can use bigger monitors, but they would not work right, and would not be at native resolutions.

Is the Dell basic warranty a 3-year warranty? I tried to look on the Outlet website but couldn't figure out what the warranty was that came with these.

I would get the 37w3, then get like the Viewsonic 22" monitor. Or, get 2 x 2407's, or get a Dell 3007. Whichever one you prefer.

I'd wait for this model to be available (I expect within a month):

Sharp LC-32GP1U

32" Real 16:9 LCD, 1920x1080, "Gamer's Line"
1700:1 native contrast! (8500:1 dynamic) - just awesome.
6ms response time
Gamer mode with low input lag / fast response time.
3 HDMI + 1 DVI + 2 Component inputs

MSRP is $1700, I bet it hits 1500 and below fast (on the net).
This is the biggest size I'd put on my desk, any bigger and the pixels are too large, you'd have to sit some distance from a 37" (or use it in your living room, sitting on a couch some distance away).

Compared to Westinghouse, Sharp is a major brand, one of the most respected names in LCD, and this model is still priced within reason and completely destroys it in all specs, except for panel size.

For that kind of money isn't a 30" lcd monitor a better choice? you get twice the pixels and with a decent graphics card games at 2560 x 1600 are significantly sharper. A 32" low resolution tv for 1500 seems kind of expensive..

Problem is a monitor with a resolution of 2560x1600 gives very limited flexibility. That is the attraction of big screen tv lcds with 1980x1080 resolution. The reason everyone is talking about the 2707WFP is due to its 1920x1200 resolution with 1:1 pixel mapping.

I find that with today's technology, 1920x1080 (or 1920x1200) is ideal. When watching movies, or playing games, it's something a high end rig can drive well. With higher resolutions, games like Oblivion, Rainbox 6, etc have too low a frame rate and with newer games its going to be worse. Not to mention this particular monitor has over 8000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 1700:1 native. Much better color controls and is specially tweaked for gamers on top of all that with low input lag and faster refreshes than the 30" monitors. Movies will look way better on these too, although not all of us care about this.

For extreme closeup office documents type work or graphics editing, you may consider the 30" monitors but for home use, I would find the 32" just about perfect, if placed a few feet back on a desk. Just my opinion and use, of course - for others' needs, 30" may be better.

I'm running a 2560x1600 and 1600x1200 CRT off of a single 7900gtx. I can actually play CS:source and a handful of other games when I switch it to single monitor mode at 2560x1600. I was not expecting that. When the prices drop, I'll do one (or two) of the 88xx series cards, but don't think you need to spend 600 dollars to run a 30".

My dell was $1440, $1550 shipped after taxes from costco. Saw them in the $1199 a week later on the dell site.

I'm leaning toward the 37 inch west and a 2nd 20/22 dell. i love the idea of the 30 dell but the fact that i would have to upgrade vid card to 8xxx series (400-600) and motherboard (using agp now) and possible power supply. would push me over the 2k mark :(

ah decisions decisions
