Hey guys,..im trying to decide what proc im gonna go with in my new w/c build. Now...i have a new 939 gigabyte board, ( well, almost new.) G-force 4 sli chipset. A good speeder..But at first i wanted a FX-60. But here lately a few people have been saying "opteron"! But when i look at the fx spec's : hypertrans, MMX, SSE, SSE 2, SSE 3, enhanced 3d now, NX bit, and blah blah...? Now, i do photo's, edit film, lots of music, and games..the opty dont have a few of these. Now i can get a 2.6 opteron for the same price i can get a FX-60. What do i do!!?? So please give me some input here. I need to make an informed decision soon.

LOL...

Another thread about FX60 and opty, lmao.

You can actually go search and you'll find like 7 threads
that is like this thread that was written with in 2 months

Anyways, sum it up,
if you are gonna spend the money go for FX-60.
However you should consider using this PC for
awhile, and if you intend to upgrade soon this option
is a total waste of money.

Opteron 185 is a waste of money.

If you don't wanna spend much money and plan
to buy a new PC in the near future, just buy a
Opteron 165 with good stepping CCBBE or CCB1E
and OC it to 2.6 or higher if you choose.

i think the CCBBE's are going the way of the dodo. new optys (and X2s) seem to be coming out of online retailers with LCB9E stepping, which hasn't been tested a ton, but seems to be hitting high 2.xGHz with upgraded air cooling.

(to zero) That's what the FS/FT forum is for :p

Basically, the whole kerfuffel over the Opteron is that it's the poor man's uber chip: you can drop ~$180 on a 165/170 CCBBE and reach the speeds of the $300+ high end Athlon FX chip. So basically, if you don't have a lot to blow on your processor, that's when the Opteron shines. If you have the money though, go with the FX because you don't need to OC them (and as such cool them better) to get that high-end performance.

personal preference.

i don't buy used processors from this forum. too many people OCing, and learning to OC. god knows how many volts these things have been subjected to before they wrap it back up and say "LIKE NEW!!!!11one"

at 2.75 on the stock cooler, ccbbe core, with what HAS to be the last g skill 1gig tccd kit. (pc550) ddr4400 (certified to 277 @ 2.65v) got it from newegg a week ago. been happy and stable. idle temps 32-34.. load temps never higher than 45.

my $65 144 does 3050 ghz w/ 1.44vcore so i'm pretty happy with that

if i was going dual core would deff get a 165 or 170 from the forum...

LOL...
Opteron 185 is a waste of money.

Not really. Its cheaper than the FX60 (except for the recent TD deals). So this is a good option for someone looking for performance and stability and doesn't want to bother overclocking.

Which is a pretty small niche, since people who don't want to overclock
usually look for X2s ;)

But if you are gonna waste that much money for a Opty 185, might as well spend
a bit more to get the best s939 Processor possible.
(FX-60 cost like $20~30 more than opteron 185 these days)

honestly opteron 170-175 is the best place to be... you dont have to have a DFI or Asus MVP board to get good OCs and they are cheap...

I would go with a 165 if you board can to 334 like mine can :)
