Cracked screen on Macbook

I'm a bit confused. I've heard that Applecare will replace a cracked screen on a Macbook no hassles at all. I bought a macbook last June and was led to believe that I had a free year of "warrantee" from apple. If I wanted three more years, I could buy applecare at anytime in the following year.

My screen is cracked on my macbook and I don't know whether my one year warrantee from apple is going to help me out on this. I don't recall dropping my macbook or even bumping it hard for that matter in the last few weeks. Will I get my screen fixed for free if I haven't yet bought applecare?

Thanks.

I don't think they cover accidental damage.....You're going to have to pay for it....warranty or not.

Hrmmm... I had a bad battery just a month ago. They sent me a new one and told me if I send my old one back, they will refund my 50 dollars that they charged me. Well it's been another month and I still see 50 bucks missing from my checking account. I've been meaning to call them since thursday when I found out about that..... and now this. I'm a bit frusterated haha.

Thanks for the help.

depends on who you talk to...my brother took an iPod in that had a shattered screen (internally), no external damage though. The guy was super cool and swapped it out on the spot no questions asked.

The warranty you have now is the same as if you had apple care, apple care just extends your telephone support for three full years and gives you an additional two years (three years total) of warranty for problems. Apple Care is definitely worth it and at times they do treat you a little better if you have it but it won't give you any more coverage for this problem. Take it in to them and see if they'll replace it. The worse they can do is say no.

I just called... she said that it's going to be nearly impossible to get a free screen replacement with or without applecare. Then I asked her how much I would be charged for a potential screen replacement. 750 bucks. haha. Shit.

Looks like I may just tough it out and keep on using it with the cracked screen. It is only about 2 inches long and a little explosion of color.

For that price of fixing it I may as well just try and sell this broken one and buy a new macbook or macbook pro.

I really don't believe that this happened without some sort of trauma to the MacBook, it seems to me like you're not telling us something and this isn't a problem we hear about that isn't caused by the user directly so you shouldn't expect to get your screen replaced for free.

yeah, i really think it depends on who you talk to. I've heard many stories of people getting better treatment at the genius bar because they had applecare.... things like covering accidental breaks, etc. but like anything its luck of the draw.

It's a shame replacement parts for laptops are not as easy to get as car parts. I can make a call to any of the local car part places and they'll deliver whatever I need the next day and since there's so many different places, I can find whoever is cheapest.

If I need a laptop replacement part, I've gotta pay through the nose, wait a few days, and then finally get it.

$320 shipped for a screen isn't bad (via ebay) but screen prices are never really cheap.

Alright guys thanks for the info and help!

I remember seeing a thread on macrumors about a guy putting a 1920x1200 lcd in his 15.4 inch macbook pro. Is there a 13.3" 1440 screen made out there?

And are there any guides on the internet to help with the installation of an lcd screen?

Thanks.

also, check with your cred card company if you bought it with your cred card, many times, the cred card company will cover the warranty

Nah. wxga is usually the max for a 13''

Just buy a replacement screen on ebay, do the swap yourself. It'll run you maybe $300 and its worth it.

It's Apple policy that accidental damage is NOT covered under any of their current warranties.

I worked in Apple support and even if I wanted to be nice and set up the computer for a free repair, the people at the repair depot would see the cracked screen, notice there isn't an authorization from a higher level tech or CSR and would put it on hold for several days and then send it back.

The genius bar has to go through the same system. If they're actually replacing items that have been accidently damaged so I have no idea how they're replacing or repairing any items that have accidental damage on them...

Having said that, sometimes there are internal issues that they track that may look like accidental damage and they can replace it (which explains the iPod screen, wink wink) but that hasn't happened on the MacBook screens....
