Not sure if there is one of these already, or if this is being posted in the correct section. But anyways,

Not much to see here. I just SSHed into my server (no GUI), and did a screen cap from there.

Yeah...all youd see is shell of my servers...pics of hardware maybe?

Yeah, If we convert it to a hardware thread more people (myself included) might contribute more, but a lot of us run headless/comandline so its kind of worthless to post screenies
:(

I think of the 10 or so servers I admin only one actually has X installed, and not by my choice. Below are a few screen "caps":

SELinux Gentoo Portage Mirror / Squid Proxy (We had remote root enabled for about a year with the default password as root, never got hacked, booyah)

If theres interest I'd be happy to try to get some shots of the entire lab to show off. It's quite impressive as far as wiring goes, which is to say that I'm amazed anything actually works. As far as my apartment LAN goes... it's hard to tell what is doing what these days with systems coming and going. My workstation functions largely as a fileserver, see sig, more of the same.

I would be interested in seeing that!

Yea, I'de really like to run all my servers headless on Linux, but I can't for the life of me get n e thing running on Linux. Trust me, I've been playing with Linux for a year or so, and so far I have an IPcop firewall and I used to have a FoldServer running. I figured I'de make a thread for server screenshots since we don't have one, we already have plenty of network pics and stuff.

Just got a new server at work, thought this was amusing: :p

I'll get a more intresting shot tommorow.

Hey Carloswill, that screen shot, it looks like a newer version of top? What app are you running and do you happen to have a link?

Oh, and here are mine
servers.jpg

The router is, well I think you can guess, thor is just for messing with and is a little DNS server (does reverse DNS for my little home network), staticx is for IRC (irssi specifically), SVN, and ssh (I also use it to check my email, using mutt). Nemesis is one I'm finishing up building so I can put it out where I work. It will end up being the one I IRC from and will host some of the random domains I have.

mines a blank server 2003 desktop with just a windows taskbar :p

Everything runs in the background for backup, ftp, etc.

Same here for my file server. It's a plain XP desktop with file and printers sharing enabled for now and folding :)

I am confoozled here... Why in the hell do people put X window manager on their server?! All a server can have is a power cable and an ethernet cord. If you have a problem, then connect the KVM switch to it... It's a major stability and security risk in my opinion.

Which one of these post shows some one running X on the server?

And i agree, it seems really stupid.

I have a GUI installed, just because I barely know how to get much done from the command line. Though with windows, its not like theres much choice :(

My server "screenshot" :

Solaris 10

Im not sure about the rest of you, but any time I screw something up and need to look around for files, the GUI really helps noobs like me. Though of course, once its setup... seems fairly dumb to have the GUI open, considering how much ram it uses.

Hey...Last time i checked...ssh'ing into a server doesnt mean that it's running X.

I can't speak for the other guy, but my server does not run a GUI. If you read my origional post, you would see that my screenshot was from my laptop (Ubuntu) with a SSH session open to my server,

Yea, I was trying to point out that he needs to read the post, not just look at the pictures.

that box is my company's primary Microsoft SQL server, with about 1.5TB of databases (FC SAN)

Nice! Is it a blade server or something? I'm just wondering how you get all of those CPU's in there (even if they are dual core).

Thats a realy nice server... Do you have pictures from the outside ?? Must be a huge machine

It's either a quad dual core or quad Xeon's with HT. Not unusual considering it's an enterprise SQL server. :)

Probably 4U's. :)

Maybe dual "quad core Xeon" :D
But i dont know how multiple cores show up in the device manager... either way a impressive machine...

Why use a KVM? Use a serial connection.

Anyway there are a lot of good reasons to run x on a server. In a home setup or small business it isn't an issue. A lot of config tools run under x and basic controlls that users may need to run have x versions of them as well. Not a big deal.

If the system is going to run headless once you set it up though you can always have x on there in case you want to use it and shut it down when it is not in use.

My old homesever has been removed. If I get around to fixing my new one I'll post a pic. It is a pentium d running 2k3 std and right now sharepoint kills dns(and the ad connection to it) when ever I try to load it. :D

With work I needed to switch back to windows for most of my work(have 1 linux notebook now)

P-III 700 384MB

Guess which one?

Mainly used for:
-P2P
-FTP
-NDAS protocol translation relay and shar control since LPX runs like a nightmare over WiFi.

Usually controlled through RDP but has a VNC server.

Here are my 5 main servers.

The first putty window is my Clark Connect firewall running on a Dual 1.266Ghz DL360 G1.
The second and third putty windows are my two ESX servers, both are IBM x360's with quad 1.6Ghz Xeons.

The lower left RD window is my media/iscsi san server and the upper right RD window is my DHCP/DNS/iSNS/SQL/MOM server.

I don't have pics of the exterior, but it is a 4U rackmount (google for 'ibm xseries 445' for pics)
