they will cost about the same :)

i have and amd x2 4400+, 3GB ram and asus mobo,(MVP32 deluxe) and thinking of replacing it with a C2Duo e6600 and an asus P5 wifi mobo and 2GB RAM..

OR...

a new LCD possibly a benQ 24", to replace my aging HP7217A CRT which i LOVE, its like a damn baby......:(
i know there isnt an LCD short of $3K that'll replace the picture on this thing, but the sheer size and weight will be an issue soon as i am old as dirt :p

what would YOU guys do???

lol at your profile. Stick with the crt, which you love so much, and go for the E6600, OC that puppy to 3.5GHz, and have a machine that will last.

Find an 24" LCD in a few months, maybe on ebay. What video card do you have anyways?

Your computer specs are decent and will carry you for a while, and you know something shinier and faster will be out in six months that will capture your attention anyway. Personally, I would get the monitor first as it will last you through multiple hardware changes.

Another vote for the hardware. That's a good CRT right there...I would keep using it as long as you can. Hell...you could sell off your old hardware and put it towards a LCD somewhere down the line.

score so far:

HW upgrade 2

Monitor 3

thanks for the suggestions so far

Get a monitor. Your specs are great. No need to upgrade that. Your crt while produces a great picture does not warrant its size. Sorry but crts are crap. The picture does not justify the size no matter how you argue it. I was like you, i used a large crt just because i couldnt let go of the picture quality. But the sheer size i just couldnt handle it anymore. Plus the bulk looked really goofy on my desk (i had a large sized one too). But i traded mine in for a dell 2405fpw when that thing came out. So you can imagine how long i held over before i upgraded.

Monitor all the way.

Aye, the weight of CRT devices is a major setback. I don't care if they tend to be cheaper. I also need flat screens, and even some CRTs that claim to be flatscreen aren't truly flatscreen.

If you're settled somewhere permanently, go for a CRT. If you might be moving a bit, get a flat panel.

Why do you hate LCDs, anyway?

get a nice 24 inch lcd, ur love it trust me.. i had a 21" crt trinitron, was nice, but widescreen rocks

Hm... how much you want for your monitor? lol. your system is still quite good, so i'd say get a new monitor... but i wouldnt replace that crt, i'd run a dual monitor setup, hehe.

Get a new monitor, with the resolution of that monitor(1920x1200), C2D wouldn't show you any difference in games because you GPU will be the bottleneck.

monitor man. change that sig about no lcd's ;)

i got an lcd and i've loved it ever since :)

Because i work alot in photoshop, and color accuracy is pretty important. I havent found a good LCD that does the trick as far as picture quality, especially in the blacks. :(
Other reasons:
input lag, response times, 1:1 resolutions, contrast levels, limited refresh rates (that one isnt really a big deal but would sure be nice to go over 60FPS, isnt that what we have hardcore graphics rigs for :D) just to name a few.

I REALLY like the picture on the samsungs, but the input lag on them sucks. Whenever i do find a LCD i like, theres ALWAYS something that kills the deal for me.

I'm hearing that BenQ LCD (forget which one but its really popular) is a good one that has a little for everybody (gamer, graphics designer, web surfer).
I read all these good reviews on a particular LCD, and all it takes is ONE person to say "this is NOT for graphic design" and the deal is off. I figure they work in photoshop also or other graphic design areas and know what they're talking about.
Problem is, i cant afford that NEC for $6300 that is made specifically for photoshop people. :(
I'm trying to find a happy medium somewhere but cant. :(

Thanks for the input guys, looks like i'll be monitor shopping soon

I just got a Westinghouse 37" 1920x1080 and it is the single greatest upgrade I have ever made in 15 years of being a gamer.

My system is still an OC'd Athlon 2100+ w/a 6600gt... I can't even play most games in it's native res yet and it is still that good.

I will be upgrading my system in the next few months and then I'll be in gaming bliss.

This is coming from a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930sb 19" CRT considered to be one of the best CRTs out there.

Personally I would get a kickass monitor (bigger is better as long as you can sit farther away) and save your cash for a 8800gtx or r600 (whichever is better). Then you will have the ultimate setup... your current system is already kick ass.

The system really isn't that dated, treat yourself to a nice new monitor :D

Your rig blows mine away, but my 19" LG LCD certainly fools people. Plus, my case has a fan controller with blue LEDs, so people think it's all spiffy and sweet.

...well it was a few years ago :p

thanks guys, looks like it'll be a benq FP241W i'm looking at.

looks like the best thing out there right now.

i wont be getting rid of the HP, but just put it over to the side for now.

Hopefully this benq rocks, but i'm a little skeptical. if it arrives with any dead pixels or extreme backlight bleeding, i'll pull the rest of my 8 hairs out :(

well i jumped on the BenQ FP241W.

we'll see how this one is, seeing how i'm not an LCD lover.....

got it from newegg, hopefully things will be OK with no dead pixels, etc....

wish me luck :p

You should have waited for the newer lcds to come out, 100hz etc. or sed. Buyers remorse :)

Monitor for sure. Your system is solid for now and all the pretty new pixels on a 24" LCD will make you forget all about how much you loved the CRT.

Oh yeah just my 2 cents on the LCD don't get a BenQ spend the money and get a Dell you'll be much happier with it. I have both and i really am not fond of the BenQ at all.

thanks but......http://www.trustedreviews.com/displays/review/2006/09/13/BenQ-FP241W-24in-Widescreen-Monitor/p1

i've heard just the opposite about the dell. people at work have the dell 2407 (?) and that say its not to work with photoshop with, the benq is much better.....

Hmmm....i mean to each his own for sure.

But i live in Photshop i'm a graphic designer I run with dual Dell 24" and i have not had one problem yet. I have a Dell 20.1" also on my other rig and it runs fantastic not a noticeble dead pixel and its nearly 3 years old.

My BenQ 19" started losing pixels 4 months after i purchased it now i just use it to troubleshoot other pc's.

Do you have the 2405's? or the 2407's? The 2407's have worse color (or so I've heard). And unless he wants used from ebay, he'll have to get a 2407 if he goes with dell. maybe dell has fixed this problem witht he newer stock, along with the banding issues? i dunno, but when you find out, let me know, hehe.

Monitor! I have a slower system than yours on a 24" and I enjoy it more because its more versatile for watching movies, xbox 360 etc I can always upgrade the pc Besides, your current setup can easily drive a 24"
