i used that background for a while, but it was blue instead of greyscale.

Actually that's not true if your bootcamp partition is ntfs. You can't change the icon if it's ntfs because os x will only do read only on the ntfs partition.

ah yes, I forgot this - I could do this because I always do FAT partitions for my boot camp partitions.

Interesting. I didn't realize that icons were specifically part of the metadata for individual files...

I actually found a walkhrough for doing this! Too bad it's like reading JAPANESE for me :( Anyone have an alternate explanation? http://wiki.onmac.net/index.php/Personalize_your_bootloader

1.- Format a USB stick with a FAT file system (you can use any volume really, but it needs to be FAT).
-Done, and Done

2.- In Mac OS X, set a custom volume icon using the Finder's "More info" window or any tool of your choice.
-What the hell does this mean? Find an icon and copy it?? I'm assuming it means use the "Get Info" feature of Finder on your desired icon and copy it? But what to do after that???!!!

3.- Open a Terminal window, enter

cd /Volumes
ls -la
-Sounds easy enough....

You'll see a file listed that has the same name as the FAT volume, but with a "._" prepended. For example, "._USBSTICK".
-What??

4.-Copy that file to the equivalent name for the Windows XP NTFS partition by typing in the terminal

cp ._USBSTICK ._WinXP
-I can do this but I don't quite undersand what the purpose of "._" is as explained above or what "cp ._* ._*" does...

5.- Transfer the ".VolumeIcon.icns" file created on the FAT file system to the root of the NTFS partition, using Windows.
-Where the F* did this .VolumeIcons.icns !@#$@!# come from???!!!!!

6.- Open a Command Prompt and Enter in "attrib +H +S .VolumeIcon.icns" from the root of your NTFS partition. This will make the file a Hidden, System file, which hides it from curious passers by and even if you have the show hidden and systems files it will not show up in your NTFS partition.
-Sorry I didn't make it this far...

I have very basic DOS skills and comprehension, but I'm guessing this is UNIX stuff I don't quite understand.

anything with a . in front of the filename is hidden in the gui of unix based systems. go into your terminal sometime and poke around your hard disk a bit, because there is a LOT you don't see in aqua.

The tutorial is saying use "ls -la" to show a file with the "._" prepend while listing the Volumes ....

On my install I can see:

drwxrwxrwt 5 root admin 170 Jan 8 22:37 .
drwxrwxr-t 29 root admin 1088 Jan 8 15:25 ..
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 1 Jan 8 15:25 Macintosh HD -> /
drwxrwxrwx 1 Gavagai Gavagai 4096 Jan 8 22:37 SD CARD
drwxr-xr-x 1 Gavagai Gavagai 0 Apr 22 2009 Windows

There is not a single FILE listed in my VOLUMES, what the hell is this tutorial useful for??!!

Just got my new mac set up today... Got a refurb ibook connected to my samsung 19" LCD running at 1280x1024 (screen span doctor and switch resx are godsends). So far I've just been doing basic stuff like getting my external HDD working, setting up adium, itunes, and trying out new browsers (firefox is my favorite so far). Here it is...
g4 1.2
512 ram
os10.4.8

heheh thats what I thought, and boy was I wrong. Since I'm not really transferring large files all the time and I plan on importing all my music over to this laptop, it will be faster at fuller capacity than a smaller higher rpm drive. Figured the macbook wasn't a blazing fast system anyways. As a work machine for music and movies on the side, it was pointless to put in a 100gb 7200rpm drive, if it was just for music, I would have considered a 160gb 5400. I'm not loading game levels ont his thing or doing video editing (not interested in my macbook running at 70c for hours on end while I do video editing and encoding)
Real world usage, use what you need, do without what you don't. I never buy stuff on based pure specs anymore, especially for laptops. :)

oooh... like it.

link to that wallpaper?

Thanks in advance!

i got it off interfacelift. lemme upload it for you...

oh yeah, and that one dude with the shemale folder on your desktop, that is hilarious!! Your should watch out when you take pics of stuff like that. but lol, that it great.

There's a hidden preference for where to put it. Download Tinkertool or something such to tweak the position of the Dock. Also, ClearDock and TransparentDock will let you make the Dock transparent.

Tinkertool is awesome!
any other useful utilities that are similar to tinkertool?

Currently cycling through photos I took of my recent trip to Japan. Current background right now is Shibuya district in Tokyo for anyone that wants to know.
