Official 97.92 8800GTX / GTS Windows XP WHQL Certified Drivers Released Jan 10th 07

Fixed it (UT2K4) for me mate - did you uninstall with Driver Cleaner?

Driver cleaner does not work 100% of the time. On more than one occasion I've found stuff left over that Driver Cleaner missed. No matter how many times I've run it, in normal or safe mode it doesn't always remove everything.

Running driver cleaner and installing the new drivers didn't change anything for me. UT2004 performance is still shit.

Damn dude, sorry to hear that :( UT2K4 is pretty much all I play - I was near suicidal when my brand new rig barfed on it.

Is there any other (easy) method for removing drivers that you might recommend, aside from a reload ;-), for such a situation?

I've gone through the registry manually pruning drivers out of it. You don't want to do that. On one occasion at NVIDIA's direction, I screwed up my machine and it wouldn't boot anymore. I was forced to re-install.

Just to clarify- most of UT2004 plays perfectly fine- it's just a few maps (mostly user maps) that run a bit erratic- certain areas it stutters. Yes- I did use driver cleaner and it seemed to not make a difference for me. See if you can find DM-Kadath map and tell me if everything is smooth. It stutters when you go up to the round glowing jump pad.

Driver cleaner is quite good but yes, it isn't the end all of properly removing old drivers. I like to run good old Registry Mechanic after I boot back into normal mode from using driver cleaner in safe mode. I wonder why a good registry cleaning program is left out of the equation when it comes to keeping your system optimal in terms of performance.

Because a lot of those programs don't work worth a damn either.

That is why I do it myself if I feel I need to.

DLing now (Community Bonus Pack 2, Volume 1)...

EDIT: See what you mean! Nightmare. I only play ONS, not found anything (yet) that's as bad as DM-Kadath (thankfully).

No these DID NOT fix the shadows in Call of Juarez for me!!!

Did anyone have better luck?

A good reason to use System Restore to create a restore point beforehand. It's still pretty nasty if you have to boot to the Recovery Console (or a BartPE CD) to get things back from that point, though it can be done.

Sucks to be in that position, though, I agree with that. Back in the late 90's when I switched from a horribly buggy ATI Rage Fury to a Creative TNT2 Ultra, the ATI uninstall didn't remove the registry entries that linked OpenGL to their drivers. Took me a day to figure out why all OpenGL games crashed on the new card, and then regedit it out.

I got an email from valve just now and they are telling me they expect a patch out this week or early next week that will fix this problem. So it appears that its not a driver issue at all.

Great news, this has been a huge gripe of mine for a while now.

Troll alert

i agree, i just dont get all the fuss. The 8800 has been the most problem free video card purchase i have had, period, I just dont understand all the hang wringing over drivers. they h ave been near perfect for me. Of course i game and i am sure if i spent hours and hours starring at my screen i could find some fault but then you look up and your life is over. lol

They aren't perfect, IMO, but Dave is still trolling a number of threads I've seen. Half his beef is on not having Vista drivers (because ALL of us are running the not-yet-released Vista Home Premium/Ultimate, dontchaknow). 8800 drivers have had some texture-corruption issues in XP in certain games that have been a problem for some; Splinter Cell: Double Agent has had more serious issues for a lot of folks.

I've only had 97.28 installed for a bit; I have to fully test to see if it has fixed Oblivion issues. If it has fixed those, and SCDA (I know that was a major issue for a lot of folks), and if I no longer have odd random crashing issues in 3DMark06 (runs stable sometimes, not others), then I'm willing to say I think drivers are where they should be at. Not that more tuning can't be done, but that will be pretty good for a card released only a couple of months ago.

Gotta love how you are called a troll when you are pissed that a company releases subpar products and then sends a fan boy in to call them a troll to save face. If i am a troll then you are a company sponsored fan boy. Ut2k4 runs like ass on my box. Playable but stuttery as hell. Seeing as this and COD2 are the only fps games i play anymore this annoys me. Fog problems in hl2 which i dont play that much anymore so doesn't really affect me that much. I do get random lockups or BSOD's when playing avi's or streaming videos which i know are related to the subpar drivers. Let's not even get into the lack of vista support for a legally obtained copy of vista via msdn. I also hope you weren't insinuating that i pirated said copy of vista. This whole situation reminds me of the 90's in which ati had such solid hardware but was hampered so badly by their drivers as to make them untenable. It just irks me when an excusing fan boy calls someone with a legitimate gripe a troll.....

We should all demand NOTHING but 100% satisfaction with a product that costs $499-$649 and accept no excuses for incompetence. To do anything less would be simply irresponsible.

Having high expectations for something that has a lot more riding on it than what the previous gens did is insane. I already knew there was going to be a lot of problems well before the cards came out. Hell, when it comes to performace, that part took me by surprise cus the 8800s perform well beyond my expectations. Driver conflicts are the only thing holding these cards back but that is to be expect. Subpar as you put it, yes, but looking at the bigger picture, a lot more had to be done for this card than past gens. Seeing how its DX10 first, the card had to assure full operation under that enviorment. Which is why I see so many DX 9 based games have so many different problems. All that are being dealt with quite swiftly on Nvidias part. The other thing is this card was built with Windows Vista in mind. Now seeing how rocky past Windows OS launches have been, the problems with Vista SHOULD be expected. You can expect that to be a problem for atleast a few more months. Like what many said in the OS forums, you can expect the usual SP1 to fix the crapload of problems that will occur with the new windows.

Overall, I seem impressed with the 8800s. They beast for sure. So much so that I'm 100% convinced that it caused the delays of the R600 cards from ATI. No one ecxpected these cards to perform on the scale that they do. The playable crysis at CES pretty much stamps that. Game ran incredibly smooth with everything maxed out ingame.

I don't know, my GTX doesn't give me any problems with movies at all, can't attest to the other games as I don't play them but what I have played ran smoothly. Did I read correctly in an earlier post that you are running 2 GTX cards? If so, your problems (with the videos at least) may very well be due to your power supply. Even something as decent as an Antec 550 isn't enough for a GTX SLI setup.

Good call on the PSU.

I've not had any issues with video, but them I am running with an 850W CM PSU (6 12v lines at 18A each), and only 1 GTX ;)

Oh sure dave, I would have been HAPPY to wait till feb/march for my 8800GTS, just so they could iron out a few driver issues. Its not as if Nvidia isn't trying to take care of it, and MOST of us (trolls not included) are happy to have DX10 cards that are this fast, this early. Nothing has ever been released like this before, its a total overhaul of 3D graphics as we know it which has never happened before, and probably a cast iron bitch to write drivers for.

So in other words, Dave, take your high and mighty geek ass out of the chair, take $20 dollars out of your mommas purse, go find a crackwhore, get laid, and JOIN THE REAL WORLD! :p

lol at the entire post :D Good use of commas, which is always nice :)

Make your excuses as you will. If you want to offer excuses for incompetence then be my guest. I for one will demand 100% satisfaction from every purchase that I make, computer gear or any other type of purchase. You guys excusing them just empowers other companies to treat their customers with this kind of support and service. Look at nvidia's forums. Anyone who posts any thread with a problem or a gripe has their post immediately deleted or their account suspended. Nvidia can't deal with the problems they are having and the huge customer support fiasco that they have created so they just seek to bury it by deleting posts and populating the other forums with excusing fan boys.

And another thing, Wtf does getting laid have to do with the fact that I have a gripe about a high dollar purchase that doesn't work as advertised and has faulty software? I swear it's like this board is inhabited by infants. It has been my experience that whenever somebody says, "join the world, get a girlfriend and get laid" that it is them who generally needs to take their own advice.

I will continue to mostly be happy with my 8800 but I will never under any circumstances make excuses for inadequacy or poor support from a company. The nvidia forums fiasco was the last straw for me. They could have chosen to graciously try to fix the problems that others are having on the forums and offer them support, but instead they chose to become heavy handed and make the situation 10x worse. Customer. Relations. Nightmare.

Good parts bolded :D

If you expect 100% satisfaction with everything you get, then you sir, are gonna have one FUCKED UP life. It doesn't work that way, this is a new product! the hardware itself seems to be pretty bug free, and I am betting, that when vista is released to the public, we will get good drivers along with it. I am glad I didn't have to wait for "100% satisfaction", Nvidia has been truly awesome about drivers over the last 10 years or so. I, for one, am not going to lambast them because it takes time to develop perfect code for brand new hardware.

You own one, you use it, so quitchyerbitchen already.

As far as being "heavy-handed", Their probably tired of hearing whiners like you on their forums and want to deal with new problems, not ones they are working on already. In my opinion, the computer enthusiast community is fill with to many "I want it all, and I want it NOW!" personalities like you. Life doesn't work that way.

I am gonna stop now, because I really don't like you astrodave, not a flame, just the truth, and I don't want to get banned for name calling.

Edit> I wonder if you get "100% satisfaction" from your right hand? :p

It's the left hand actually, but my wife takes care of that for me now ;) Say hi to your parents for me since I am sure you are still living in their basement :) :)

I am a perfectionist by nature and I expect the same out of every other person. Perhaps a character flaw I admit. I hope I didn't offend anyone too greatly. I still like you even though I don't agree with you letting them off the hook so easily. Perhaps I am just a better person than you if you can dislike somebody and almost resort to name calling based on their expectations of competence from a company and its product. Enjoy your weekend.

Parents have been dead since 2000 jackass, I wouldn't go there

Perfectionism is a character flaw. Your self superiority is a major character flaw. I know I'm a dumbass at times, who doesn't know shit and is light years away from perfection, therefore I tend to give others the benefit of the doubt and don't expect perfection out of them. Its not worth complaining about something like this, Nvidia has an awesome record with drivers. I think your deluded, egotistical, and I feel sorry for you. Enjoy your weekend sir. :D

PS> If Nvidia doesn't have this fixed within a month, I take back everything I said, and will agree with you 100%

I couldnt agree with you more....And if we do nothing more its our fualt when we get subpar products. Oh wait, we are getting crap and we are buying it. So we only have ourselves as consumers to blame for the recent flury of crap we have been getting from not only hardware manufacturers and from software developers.

But back to the original thread. I am still leery of switching and hope to see more info about these drivers

Gotta love these children on the board. I agree with your assessment of yourself except for "at times" i would venture to say it is "all times". You seriously need to learn not to lash out at folks if they have a differing opinion from yours. It can and will get you into trouble and get you banned. Once you grow up a little then you will realize that I am right. Good luck.

LOL IIRC couple of other people have called you a troll. You don't know me besides what I post here. I am far from a child, and get ME into trouble, dude, if you act like you do here, in real life... for your sake, I hope its not too hard for the doctors to remove your head from your ass when someone shoves it there?

I haven't lashed out at you about your opinions, but your attitude, maybe one day, I could hope to be as perfect as you. ;):p

What's going on in this forum anymore.. :( This is a perfectly good thread for discussing your experiences w/ a new driver rev. What works...what doesn't, etc. I'm about to check out Rainbow Six Vegas and would like to know how the 88's are running on the .92's? Thanks! ;)

Seems to be running great for me. The only listed issue games I haven't tried are SCDA (Splinter Cell bores me for some reason), and Battlefield 2142 (Oh no EA, I bought battlefield 2, I'm not paying for shite again, nosiree)

That's on an 88 right? BF2142 runs great on the .44's.

yep, I just need to change my sig :) Leadtek 8800GTS

I am still tempted to try 2142, but am waiting for it to get patched a lil more :D

Oblivions the shit though.

I've thoroughly enjoyed BF2142 FWIW. Best in the series yet. Couple bugs, but nothing can distract me from whoring the Walker!! The close quarters combat in the Titan @ end of every round kicks @ss too.

Tell me about it. It seems as long as you don't have anything negative to say about nvidia then you can post about your experiences. This Adam kid seems to like to attack people that have had problems with their experience and call them trolls for discussing it amicably. I have already stated that i mostly like my 8800 but that the drivers are subpar and that we shouldn't have to accept that and take excuses from the company about it. That makes me a troll i guess since he obviously has some vested interest in nvidia. Please grow up Adam and take your own advice. No more lashing please.

Back during the PureVideo fiasco, my voice was one of the loudest, and I voted with my wallet when it seemed nVidia didn't care. I bought two ATI cards before I came back to nVidia.

I had a legitimate gripe then with hardware that truly didn't do what nVidia advertised it to do. In this case however, I don't feel your gripes are legitimate, and that you're overblowing the situation as well because you're P.O.-ed. Half of your gripe is about an operating system not even released to consumers yet (Vista Home Preimum/Vista Ultimate, don't count Vista Business/Enterprise here, because they aren't for home users, and the nVidia G80 isn't targeted at business/enterprise).

As for your other arguments, the hardware is a completely new design; this isn't a matter of revamping an earlier driver like going from a Geforce 78xx to a 79xx. There's a lot more work involved. nVidia is still releasing drivers at about once per month or more (96.89, 97.02, 97.44, and 97.92 are all WHQL), and making a good-faith effort to make things run right; if for some reason they stop making this effort while the product still needs work, then I think your shouts will have some meaning. Until then, I think your demands and viewpoint are unrealistic and unreasonable.

Based on your viewpoint I'm guessing that at this point you've rarely had a piece of computer hardware (at least one that also required driver software) that made you happy. I'd also advise you never to buy ANYONE's hardware until it's been on the market for at least two months. I'm rather surprised you didn't just send the card back and get a refund. And as others have said, your adding your attitude and tone (which comes off as whiny-yet-somehow-arrogant) in multiple G80 threads has been what has given others their impression of you.

Umm yeah I am the arrogant one....

You excusers all run in packs I see. I have made my point and it is valid. If you don't think that a $650 piece of hardware should have reliable drivers 3 months after its release then that is your opinion to share. It is not mine and I will continue to hold corporations accountable for it whether they be ati, nvidia, sony, ford, or microsoft. In fact if this were microsoft, all you nvidia fan boys would be slobbering at the chance to toss in your gripe.

As for your other comment: In fact I am usually happy with a high dollar purchase that I make because buying high dollar equipment usually means that you get high dollar service and support. Banning customers from forums, applying misleading advertising to the boxes of video cards, displaying an attitude of arrogance and denial to customers while providing them with a litany of excuses (none of which are posted on their website for anyone to see) about the delays is not what I call super support. The quality or lack of the drivers is not my most serious concern here, it is the support issues that I listed above. I can wait three more weeks for vista. What I can't wait for is service and support, nor will I. If you think that makes me a hardass and someone who you think will never be happy then you go ahead and keep believing that and keep making your excuses for inadequacy. Cheers gentlemen.
