The motherboard destroys my PSUs

Hey,

I have an Asus A8V Deluxe which is acting very strange. When I connect a PSU to the motherboard, both 4-pin ATX and the 20-pin EATX, the PSU lets out a discreet but high-pitched humming noise. I left one PSU connected to the mobo overnight and it broke. What is wrong with it? It's like the mobo is breaking the PSUs. How can this be possible? I used the mobo on a good, working computer system just a month ago. And yes, I am certain the right cables were connected...

stupid question but is the board in a case or is it lying outside a case on a table or something? are some contact points touching metal?

because it is shorting, causing your psu to overload (the squealing you hear is it screaming for help). take it apart, make sure that there are no extra standoffs on the mainboard tray. also check fir bare wire, and possibly molex pins that have either been pulled out the back of a molex, or the wire pulled out of the molex pin. set it up on a table with cpu/hsf, 1 stick ram and vid card. stoke it up and see if it still makes that sound. if so, your mb is most likely fekt, and possibly took your psu with it.

I don't know what fekt means, but the PSU is still making that sound and the mobo doesn't work very well. Btw, I didn't use any standoff screws. Should I have? Is the video card and the CPU ok? What do you think about the memory sticks, are they fried to?

Shit...

you didnt screw it into the stand offs?

im thinking that the mobo isnt on the standoffs straight then, obviously parts of the mobo are touching the stand offs and shorting. try putting it COMPLETELY together, screwed into teh stand offs and all and then try it.

But I noticed that I hadn't put any standoff screws into the case, the mobo was screwed directly into the case, no standoffs. I think it's fried because it doesn't work on a wooden table without a case. But is the other stuff fried too? I accidentely left the shorting system plugged in during the night.

I feel kind of stupid.

oh you didnt use any standoffs.. i got ya, i dont think the other parts will be dead, i remember helping a friend and he had done this too, we just used another mobo and i think everything else had worked. but you should probably find another mobo and install it the right way in order to test the stuff.

Yes! I am not doomed! Thank you.

Now to find another mobo and another PSU...

yea the only time i had a bad short only the motherboard was fekt (fekt is what you type in forums when you are not allowed to type fucked). but as you know, ymmv.
