WTF not shipping until June? It's normally Apple's style to announce it and at the ned say "you can buy it right now". June...damn...and Cingular exclusive partner.

not coming out till June... 4GB and 8GB versions eh? Didn't catch it... are they expandable as far as hdd space?
It's flash memory, not HD memory.

What iPod has ever been expandable?

This one isn't either.

"We're shipping them in June -- we're announcing it today because we have to go get FCC approval... we thought it'd be better to introduce this today rather than let the FCC introduce this."

Battery life: "A lot of these phones have low battery life. We've managed to get 5 hours of battery of talk time, video, and browsing. 16 hours of audio playback."

OK battery life.

meh, june and cingular exclusivity blows the deal for me.

no i phone for me... i guess i'll have to wait for the X6800 instead.

eh i bet you can unlock it and use it with tmobile or something...course you gotta pay full price.

They must be getting ready to announce a stand-alone new iPod...that $599 is with a 2-year contract too.

It seems stupid to make Cingular the exclusive provider...I'll assume Verizon just didn't want something so "open" (as in non-restricted) on their network...because to make two versions of the phone wouldn't seem incredibly difficult and it wouldn't pretty much alienate everyone who's roped into a 2-year contract with Verizon. The exclusivity BS seems to help Cingular way more than Apple.

and cingular is the exclusive us parter :(

Why is that bad?
At least the ceo of cingular just said the prices of the phones also include 2 yr contracts.

EDIT: Bah.....but june though. :( I sorta expected the delayed launch anyways. :(

Yeah just noticed that...

Cingular blows goats.

Also, you are obligated to two years of contract for that price. I'd imagine the price to be 800 for a 1 year... I can't even begin to think of the contract price if you wanted the phone upfront with no contract.

4GB for $599 and 8GB for $699 w/2-yr contract/warranty.

Steve needs to start talking about Leopard and the 12" MBP instead of the iPhone!!!!!

i bet cisco is callin up the lawyers...gonna need to change the name of that phone quick....

Why is that bad? Because it basically excludes half (at least) of their possible US customer base. Cingular's service blows where I am, so right now I have about 14 months left on a contract with Verizon. I'm not spending an extra couple hundred dollars come June to get out of that contract and sign on with Cingular.

Exclusivity always sucks.

Yeah! either that or a regular old ipod. I'm getting nervous.

verizon is only in major cities cingular is better all around in lesser populated areas

verizon blows here too

I'm happy.. cingular's service is awesome in my area.. verizon blows in my area

Yea. Cingular is the best in my area too. Too bad I have to wait for my current cingular contract to be up later in the year to get a new phone.

I live in Baltimore and go to school in Ithaca, NY (lesser populated to say the least). Verizon is by far the best for both areas...

Yeah why not just announce a standalone version of the iPod at the same time? I guess thats not coming out until June either?

Are new ipods usually announced at his keynote? 5G ipods were announced in October of 2005 I think.

No, 600 for the phone and 2 years of service. Can someone confirm?

My guess he will have a smaller keynote then in june like the showtime one announcing the final iphone launch and some ipod updates.

It's $499 for 4 Gb, 2 years service and $599 for 8 Gb, 2 years of service.

He was saying it will probably be $800 for the 8 gb and only one year of service, which probably isn't far off.

They should have made a phone that worked with the major carries so we can all rejoice.

Yeah that ended up being a major, major disappointment. I guess I'll just hope the new standalone iPods are basically just as cool just no phone built-in for a lot less money.
