61" DLP - $1800 - no rebate

You'll need to replace the bulb within 3 years?

The warranty he's talking about starts when the Manufacturer's warranty ends, so it'd be 4 years from purchase. I don't know that's you'd run through a bulb in that amount of time, but you certainly COULD run through one.

I agree that extended warranties are generally a bad deal, but if they make you feel more comfortable, I say go with the cheapest reputable one you can find, and the bulb replacement IS a nice feature.

Hmmm....I guess the question then becomes is how the bulbs work. Do they get dimmer over time (ala the bulbs in LCD displays) or just burn out. If it's the former, at what point to they replace them?

I have personal experience with a car warranty where my alarm, which was covered, was clearly failing, but they would not fix it unless it completely failed, which finally happened 10 months later (or roughly 9 months after the warranty ended), so I'm always wary of promises that make them sound great.

I don't have a DLP (although I may end up buying one), but my understanding is that they go dark when they fail, much like a traditional lightbulb.

I have that 61 from BB they had it for 2100. Also get the warrenty it was $450 at bb but it lasts 4 years for when you need to change bulbs. Also it can do 1080p over hdmi and you can plug in your external HD to the side of the tv and listen to your 100gb music folder or see pictures. Thought ide let ya know!

Do not, under any circumstances buy anything from TV Authority without having a look at their resellerrating.com page. They appear to be part of the great pahlanx of NY Bait-and-Switch camer/electronics stores out there. There are a bunch of them, and each seems to operate under several differnt sites/names.

The basic pattern seems to be:
1) They advertise a product for about %25 less than ANYONE reputable.
2) Once you place an order, they either call you or ask you to call them "for verification".
3) On the phone they attempt a hard-sell of obscenely priced add-ons ($300.00 for a 2-foot HDMI cable!?), including extended warranties.
4) If the customer refuses all the add-ons, the salesperson will either cancel the order or threaten to charge the customers credit card for some large penalty (15-30%) for order cancellation.

Additionally, thye frequently have grey-market product, which the manufacturer will not warranty.

I am aware of their poor reseller rating. However, they list the TV as "in stock" which means anyone can print out their add and bring it to BB or CC for price matching....

Thanks for the heads up though...

If you could get BB or CC to pricematch that I'd keel over in shock

Same here. BB, CC, etc. typically don't match Web deals. They typically only match each other. But some have gotten lucky getting a store or dept. manager to match a Web price.

If it were that easy to get a price match from the big guys I would make my own site and advertise it for $200 :D

Well, it would be fair to ask BB/CC to price match sites that are authorized dealers for the product in question. But I don't see that happening. Our best bet is Wal-Mart pricing aggressively (like they've been doing since the X-mas 2006 season, from what I've read), and hope that puts pricing pressure on BB and CC.

If the set is working 2 years from now, it's going to work 5 years from now.

I can't comment on the reliability of these particular TVs or DLP in general, as I've never seen an article discussing the failure rate (and when those failures occur).

So let me get this straight. You are telling me that if a tv works 2 years from now it is going to work 5 years from now. Yet you can't comment on the reliability of the Tv being discussed nor on any DLP tv's in general. And by your last comment its more than apparent you have no idea how they work.

I'm going to have to agree with JRT on this one.

Over the last 6 years I've purchased tv's with service plans and without. Sometimes I've gotten lucky other times I've gotten screwed.

What it comes down to is if your $2k tv fails tomorrow are you 100% ok with spending the money to replace it?

If not then an extended warranty is for you. A $500 4 year in home warranty costs you about 35 cents a day.

I could care less if the warranty plan makes BB or CC 100% profit. Its a gamble, chance, luck of the draw, etc, etc, etc

But the question is do you want to take that chance or spend 35 cents a day?

I bought my current Pioneer 5050HD from TV Authority a little less than two years ago. I made them aware of my AVS forum membership and they extended a 100% no dead pixel return policy. My first set arrived DOA. They had it replaced in 15 days, no shipping costs to me. They were a little slow on the draw in the replacement, but overall my experience was good and I got better price than anywhere else I could buy. And the second set did have one stuck pixel off to the side, which was not big deal.

I think having a AVS Forum membership gave me some leverage with them as they did not want to deal with bad press there.

Hey, Kyle's here. Just wanted to say hi. Yes, AVS Forum rocks, just like Hard Forum. :D

I'm looking forward to seeing what new 50-60+ inch HDTVs will be released at this week's CES in Las Vegas. I read Samsung's LED DLP is supposed to be all the rage (it's already available for sale), but they're pretty darn expensive.

On this we agree. it's a gamble, and if you choose to play, over the long haul, the house always wins and you always lose.

Grats on your win.....you should quit while you're ahead

After seeing this thread with the talk about warranties, and with my dad getting a HL-S5687 sometime before the Super Bowl, it got my wondering about what my dad should do. Somebody mentened the warranty special for AVS members from Tape Works Texas, since being a long time member I went and checked it out. It looks pretty awesome, and I am definitely going to recommend this to my dad. With prices this low there is no reason to not get a warranty

Speaking of warranties, if that's a big concern to some, then if the TV is available at Costco, buy it from them and enjoy their free unlimited warranty.

Disclosure: I've never been to a Costco store. So I'm just passing that link along as FYI.
