Can I mount an XP-90 with mobo in case?

I'm putting together a new 3800+ build. Mounted the motherboard and realized i didn't have a spare AMD hsf. I do have an unused XP-90 that I bought a few months back before I discovered that I liked the AMD heatpipe better. I've never mounted an XP-90 before. It looks like it takes a fair amount of pressure to get the clips into the bracket. Being that I'm lazy, I'd rather not take the mobo out, but common sense warns me that that's not a good idea. So... should I take the motherboard out before attaching it?

I mounted my XP-120 in my tower, since it doesn't have a removable mobo tray. It was kinda tight but I got it done and I could do it again. :)

I've taken mine in and out with the mobo in case many times. You just have to be careful. That's a way better heatsink then the amd heatpipe one anyway.

The funny thing is this will be a slightly overclocked workstation with 2 120mm fans and the xp-90. That's more cooling than I ever put on my own machines which run on the edge, but these are the parts I have on hand. I'll try to be careful...

I find the amd heatpipes to be pretty good for the price and size.

Yes. Just unscrew one side of the stock retenion, use the included screws with the xp90 to lightly hold in the new module and so the backplate doesn't fall out, remove the second screw, re-align the new module, tighten the screws, and you're set.

It's way better than the all aluminum HSF but I'll pit my 4 heatpipe stock AMD cooler against the XP-90. I have them on 2 systems. Both 3800's. Overclocked to 2.65ghz 1.42V 48deg@100% Cpu usage fan at 60% and 2.8ghz 1.45v 49deg @100%cpu usage fan at 60% ambient 22deg. If I run the fans at 100% temps will drop to 42deg but its noisy.

The heatpipe AMD cooler is pretty good. I would actually say amazing considering it's stock HSF. I would just change fan. I would say it's very close to the XP90.

If ya want to sell and the price is right...

Well that was easy. The XP-90 went in without a hitch... once I figured out the instructions. Now if only this old Epox NF3 board would POST... but that's another problem...
