Yep forget UMD Movies in this Thread, i want to talk about the HArdware Sales and the UMD Game sales/ PSone online sales.
I dont want a flame war, I want hard reliable facts supporting your comments, lets be mature. I dont have any hard facts apart from every store that i ask for a psp in here in my area of the UK there are no PSPs left apart from the pink ones. WHat is the true market share the PSP has got hold of in the handheld console market. Lets put the arguments that the PSP is doing extremly well or is in a rut because as far as i am aware the psp has been a huge success from rumours i have heard.

Though I have no "cold hard facts" I think it's safe to say that it's hard to convince people they need two handhelds. After all, you only have room for one when go out on a trip and Nintendo has been that one for decades.

It's not struggling at all IMO. Yeah, it's obvious that DS is outselling it, but did anyone really expect the PSP to overtake the portable market that Nintendo pretty much monopolized in the last 10 years? It's doing well for Sony's first attempt at the portable market, as it has taken away a decent amount of market share away from Nintendo.

The PSP is very easy to find around here.. i've seen tons at different stores..

with that said.. i'm gonna say it's not struggling.. it's not doing as well as the DS.. but i wouldn't say it's doing bad..

I've seen a nice healthy set of games coming out for the PSP.. the only problem is.. i don't have the money to buy them.. i keep spending my money on wii and 360 stuff...

How it is faring depends on your point of view. If you thought Sony was going to take the handheld market by storm with this thing (I believe they did), they aren't doing so hot. If you thought Sony was testing the waters and entering a new market without expecting to turn a profit (a la MS and the XBOX), they're doing adequately.

The PSP seems to be treading water in the US and Europe. With several games like GTA and other Western-centric franchises moving to the handheld, western gamers seem to have started to view the handheld as a viable alternative to the DS.

With that said, it's failing so badly in Japan that even I, a die-hard Sony hater, kinda feel sorry for them.

Depends on which market you want to look at...

In the US, it's doing fairly decent, though it's being outsold by the competing handhelds now. Here's a brief glimpse at the past several months. The summer months followed pretty much the same pattern.

NPD results (DS vs. GBA vs. PSP)

November 2006 ( http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/07/npd-big-franchises-and-new-consoles-drive-industry-sales-up-34/ )
DS - ~918000
GBA - ~641000
PSP - ~412000

October 2006 ( http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=11648 )

DS - ~360000
GBA - ~169000
PSP - ~130000

September 2006 ( http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=14093 )

DS - 403000
GBA - ???
PSP - 153000

August 2006

DS - 278000
GBA - 156000
PSP - ~150000

Note that NPD is not very reliable since they do not track online sales nor Walmart (which really makes it unreliable because Walmart is one of the biggest video game retailers in the US and I keep hearing that Nintendo handhelds sell very well in the chain; not sure about PSPs).

In Japan, the Nintendo DS has held the #1 position in weekly sales for most (like...95% of the time) of the past year and more. Many weeks, it has sold more than every single other system (PS2, Gamecube, PSP, GBA, XBox, XBox 360) combined, sometimes even by a ratio of 2:1.

In Europe, I hear the PSP is hip and popular, but I don't feel like digging for those numbers.

Sony has reported that ~23 million PSPs have been shipped worldwide. That does not mean sold, and the number sold is supposedly much lower than the number shipped, but I don't know what that number would be. The Nintendo DS has sold (not shipped) about 27 million or more worldwide.

So...US/Europe, PSP is in decent shape in terms of hardware sales, but I don't know about game sales. In Japan, it's struggling, big time. Nintendo DS routinely holds 7 - 10 of the top 10 games sold over the past year and more, but PSP games rarely crack the top 10, maybe a couple times in the past year, but they don't last long.

I agree with the previous posters, I don't think anyone (except maybe Sony) thought that the PSP would even come close to taking over the handheld market. I think it is nice to have competition and choices though. Sony could've made the PSP so much better. Allow homebrew instead of spending all their time trying to stop it, TWO analog nubs (wtf were they thinking with one?), no UMDs, better strap like the DS has (looks very good on my PSP btw).

No I would say the PSP is not struggling. Yes it is being outsold but that was to be expected, PSP wasn't going to break Nintendo's monopoly in the hand held market.

Both have their strengths, the PSP has some media features I like, and some games you will never see on the DS. But the DS, also has a touch screen and games you will never see on the PSP because they either aren't designed for it or are Nintendo titles.

That being said I had no problem with Nintendo having a monopoly on the handheld market. It was nice because all the games where on one system, and in the end it would be cheaper for someone like me who likes to own every system.

I think this first attempt by Sony was a good one, and I can say I have enjoyed my PSP since I bought it. The only thing I don't like about the PSP is I find the UMD's are easy to break.

I don't get why gamers have an "all or nothing" way of thinking. Sure, the DS is more successful, but the PSP is still seeing a good number of sales.

i think whats lacking with the psp are the game... thats why mine is in a FS thread in the hardforum...

if only sony would allow homebrew... they should just only try to kill iso runner and such...

Like previous people, I don't know the facts, but I don't know a single person who actually owns a PSP. I know a couple w/ DSes. I think a $200+ price point was a mistake for a portable.

I don't know a single person with a DS. In fact, I don't know anyone with a GBA, or even any gameboy for that matter. If someone did show up with a gameboy (possibly playing "Pokemon" or whatever), they'd be considered childish, or dorky. Rightly so, IMO. I know many people with PSPs though.

The PSP is sold as a more generalised multimedia tech-toy (competing with Ipods, MP3/Video players, high-end cellphones etc). $250 for a PSP isn't that much when you consider an ipod goes for $400, and new high-end cellphones go up to $500.

All I see at my college is DS and DSlite.. maybe a couple PSPs here and there.. but never anyone actually playing games on one.

Handhelds appeal to a younger audience, but the higher price and multimedia features of the PSP skew it towards an older audience.

The PSP has just as many good games as the DS, but adults simply don't have as much time to play games on the go and would rather a home console.

Even so, the PSP isn't struggling, and I certainly wouldn't say that it's a failure by any means. It's quite popular, and it's already sold more units than any other non-Nintendo handheld.

What it really needs is something to distinguish itself. A price drop wouldn't hurt either.

Proof/link? like my OP said...

Up until a month ago, the PSP was outselling everything in Japan except for the DS Lite, so I'd hardly say that qualifies as failing.

While this was certainly true about a year ago(I used to bash the PSP a lot for this), it really doesn't have much weight anymore.

Sure it does. There are no good games for the system.

Like i said, proove your points or dont post at all. Basing it off one site that many people have never even heard of isnt a be all and end all. I mean if we go by your theory the DS aint doing too good either lmao.

did you ever played lumines? surely not if you say that

First of all, the top-selling title is not Lumines. It's Grand Theft Auto: Liberty Stories.

Ok, here we go again, from gamerankings.com...lets check the number of titles in each score range:

DS:
> 90%: 3
85-90%: 10
80-85%: 13

PSP:
> 90%: 1
85-90%: 11
80-85%: 22
And then 6 more at 79.X% (DS has none).

You were saying?

Now how many of those games did I already play on my PS1 or PS2?

A commodity game won't sell a system. 80% is nothing to strive for.

Jesus, how many ds games did i already play on my snes, gba, n64 or gamecube, a daft remark followed by a daft remark, keep it a mature thread, like i said three times before, is the psp struggling or not, POST/LINK HARD EVEDENCE, i want reliable site scores not an average score, i dont know what gamespy reviews are like but the likes of mgs portable ops got 100% but i dont know wether its a reliable site which is why i posted the thread, saying "psp has just got ports that have already been on the PS1/PS2" is real ghey, The same can be said about the DS so lets keep a lid on that one.

CONCRETE EVIDENCE PLEASE!

God... Sony mouthpiece is here. Sure, I'll post some ports if you like, back in a bit...

You're only being negative to support your shoestring argument. Bullshit doesn't disprove data. Support your own statements with something.

First: dont start with that kiddy bullshit. just dont, you will be ignored by most of the people on this forum. people who find the need to talk down like that usually dont have any balls whatsoever.

Second: you know people with psp's, but done with any gameboy variant? BULL FUCKING COCK SUCKING SHIT. you could just as soon say you know nobody with a cellphone

Third: You cannot compare the psp to a quality mp3 player, and certainly not a phone.

Everyone who says the PSP doesn't have great games is out of their minds.

And the newest one to the lineup would be Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops.

Also, who cares if a game is a port, I never played Daxter before I played it on my PSP, and I haven't played a good Syphon Filter for years except on my PSP.

Ohh, and LOLZ at Mario Kart DS being new, same with Advanced Wars Dual Strike, I have both of them and they both feel like the same things with a couple updates, much like some of the PSP ports. Or so one could argue.

TOP 20 Ranked (There were 3 Nintendogs which I have counted as one).

1. Mario Kart DS - PORT
2. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow - NEW
3. Advance Wars - DEBATEABLE
4. New Super Mario Bros - DEBATEABLE
5. Meteos - NEW
6. Kirby: Canvas Curse - NEW
7. Elite Beat Agents - NEW
8. Animal Crossing: Wild World - PORT? (Really not sure, I don't know much about the Gamecube version)
9. Tetris DS - PORT
10. Super Mario 64 DS - PORT
11. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time - NEW
12. Metroid Prime: Hunters - NEW
13. Tony Hawk's American Sk8land - DEBATEABLE (Completely different engine etc)
14 - 16. Nintendogs - NEW
17. Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime - NEW
18. Sonic Rush DS - DEBATEABLE
19. WarioWare: Touched! - NEW
20. Clubhouse Games - NEW
21. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - NEW
22. Yoshi's Island DS - PORT

Ok, without the debateable ones, it's 5 out of 20 on the DS. Including, it's 9 out of 20 games. Feel free to disagree etc.

So there we go. I learnt something anyway. ;)

[Edit - GTA is new on the PSP because it's a completely new story and set of missions]
