Hi, i was just wondering how many people here have an 8800gtx and are using it on an lcd monitor wiht its max rez at 1280x1024. i ask because thats waht ill be using so i was just wondering if anyone else ran it on that.

It seems like overkill, but I'm curious to see how it works out for you :)

yeah. thats like, using a shotgun to kill a fly (which, my friend from cambelle river has done... it was hilarious, it was a mosqueto actually).

Unless you are planning on upgrading your monitor in the next, let's say, year or two, why not go for the GTS? I mean, seriously you can have everything maxed out with the special AA and everything and run every game at 1600x1200 and stay around 60FPS up or down some, why pay more than you have to?

I would rather upgrade the monitor, as that would increase your entire productivity and computer experience, rather than upgrade to a $600 graphics card.

At that res, my 8800GTS gets amazing frame rates (everything maxxed) in Oblivion...

In the 40's average.

And what would that resolution be? For comparison sake

Yeah, I'm gonna agree with these guys and say that the GTS would be a better buy. No point in buying performance that you won't use. ;)

you don't need to oc that card for awhile, cuz it would already be O.K. (overkill)

that was lamE

seriously tho, overkill

LOL I have a 8800 GTX with a 1280x1024 ... the thing is after building this system I can't upgrade my 17" LCD yet hehehe :D

But at least this allows me more headroom in the future, when the games become more demanding I'll still maintain uber fast frame-rates!!

an 8800GTX runs everything happily on 2560x1600 so even an 8800GTS is overkill at the res.

GTS here @ 660/2000 on 1280 and loving it. I leave everything maxed for every game. LCD rox Im perfectly happy at 1280 to be honest.

Same here and I love it! Although I do plan to upgrade my monitor in the near future.

It will be overkill, yes, Just remember that at such a low res for such a powerful card, your CPU will probably bottleneck the GTX (though I don't know which CPU you own). So push the eye candy to its max. Use the new CSAA and you'll be blown away with a new realm of image quality and high-performance. I sound like a PR for NVIDIA, but it's true, just read the reviews :)
And you can always buy a new monitor (24'' or 30'') in the future, where the GTX shines.

Between the GTS and GTX, If you have the money for the GTX I say go for it. I was in a similar situation when I bought my 7800 GTX, because at first I wanted the 7800 GT, Cheaper yet great performer. But in the end, I paid the extra 100 euros (at the time) for the GTX and it was worth every cent.

Yes, 1280x1024 with the GTS, everything maxxed (OC in sig, 600/1900) + HDR and I get in the 40's oblivion.

Sorry I wasn't clear :)

Im curious, I have a 8800gtx on a 22" playing all games at max res of 1680 by 1050,4aa 16af, you think thats overkill? What point does it warrent the 8800gtx?

While it's overkill NOW, what happens when you start trying to play games like Crysis/Alan Wake/UT2K7 etc. in a 6 months to a year? I wouldn't dismiss the extra power in the GTX just because it might come in handy down the line. Right now it's a little much for that res, but when the next gen games hit you might be wishing you had one.

ok i think what im going to do is buy my planned system which was a E6600 8800gtx 2g of god ram and then in about a few months ill have enough money and ill get a 24" monitor. sound like a good plan?

Check my sig, probably like what you are looking at--cost me $1700 after taxes and what-not, runs WoW and BF2142 flawlessly (WoW is pegged at max FPS for a C2D processor and my refresh rate, BF2142 is incredible.)

You'll do great with an 8800GTX!!

24"s run 1900x1200 usually. If you get a 22" running 1680x1050 or 1600x1200 you will probably thank yourself if you want it to be more future proof by having more headroom.

I've become more cautious with statements like these.

No offense intended. I just remember when I made a similar statement to someone asking for advice in early Radeon 97xx days, when John Carmack had publicly said that the new Radeon 9700 would be THE cutting-edge card to play Doom 3 on.

And then Doom 3 got delayed awhile, and by the time it came out, the Geforce 6800 cards were available, and kicked the formerly-stellar Radeon 9700's butt in that particular game. And Carmack had new things to say about which card was THE card to play Doom 3 with.

Alan Wake and Crysis have been delayed. We don't know when they'll be released. It's currently possible that by the time they are, nVidia will come out with a Geforce 89xx set of cards that adds tweaks to the 88xx family and takes it a step further. It's always best to buy cards based on the games you play right now, or that have a firm release date within a month of your purchase (read: they're in final beta, have a demo already out, or devs have declared they have released the game to manufacturing). Until then, the scene could change in the time it takes for those two titles to come out.

P.S. To the original poster, if you aren't buying a new display in the next year, I'd get the 8800GTS. As everyone has said, the GTX is overkill for 1280x1024.

There is logic in this and I can see why you would say that. I also believe you are dead wrong.

If you are a gamer, there is NO such thing as overkill. More power, even if unused today, can be utilized tomorrow. Newer games will eventually push your rig even at 1280x1024 at some point, and you'll wish you had the extra power. Or if you run into a good monitor deal someday or whatever. Never compromise if you don't have to and it's better to have too much machine than too little.

To be honest my 8800GTS runs everything pretty damn good on 20" wide screen (1680x1050)

So I guess GTX will be more then a overkill for 1280x1024.

Though if You are getting new screen there is no choice biger is better. :)
