So I'm building a computer for someone that does not really know about computers, just has a lot of money and wants to show off to his friends I think.....

He wants the best of the best and doesnt care how much it costs...

I need:

A case (good for water cooling) Thinking this one....

water cooling system... with block for CPU and maybe the vid card?? I know nothing about water cooling. And a reservoir that is clear so the water can be dyed....

CPU - Thinking the Core 2 duo X6800 but the one a step down from that is almost half as much and the benchmarks between the two are marginal.

Ram (DDR2)

Mobo (for core 2 duo)

Some video card (Whats good??)

I know its not water but a coolant type stuff....

Is there kits that sell all the hose, reservoir, blocks, pump, etc???

its the blind leading the blind :D lol j/k

If money aint no object....just buy the most expensive component for everything.
ie: x6800 or Q6700
680i mb
2x 8800gtxs
4g of ram 8500mhz
terabyte (6x150gb raptors in raid)
1kilowatt ps
Danger Den everything
etc...etc...

your real goal here should be seeing just how much you can actually spend on this comp....gold plate it even... then post pics and a pic of your friend's reaction when you give it to him, as well as a pic of his reaction when you hand him the bill. Have fun.

btw...that lian-li is nice, check out Frozencpu.com for customized cases that are w/c ready.

QX6700
Asus P5W DH
2x1Gb Corsair Dominator
8800GTX videocard
2x150Gb Raptors
Lian Li V2000
Scythe Infinity HSF
Plextor SATA DVD burner
combo floppy / 7-in-1 memory card reader
Xclio 600W PSU

approx $3,500.00

-------------------------------------------------------

if thats too expensive

e6400 (or e6600)
asus P5B-E (or DS3)
2x1Gb G.Skill
8800GTS
150GB Raptor + 250Gb 7200.7
Lian Li PC7 Plus II
Scythe Infinity (or Ninja)
Lite On SATA DVD burner
combo floppy / memory card reader
500W+ PSU (Antec, Xclio, etc)

about $1,600

no water cooling for a newb. besides its not really needed. Core2 Duo's overclock great with out. Granted if you put a quad core QX6700 in there AND plan on overclocking it then watercooling would help, but other than that you really don't need it.

the 2nd one is closer to my set-up:
http://www.crowdcontrolusa.com/overclock/shizzy3.html

Except I don't have an 8800 videocard, yet. I just don't see the need with already having a 7900GTX currently.

sorry to crap an earlier post but dont get the killer NIC. Max PC reviewed it a while back and it really had a very minimal affect on the overall performance....definitely not worth the price.

But money's no object! When else can someone recommend a killer nic? lol

dual xeons, supermicro board, gtx, etc... more power than he'll ever need.

Forget watercooling if price is no object, go for below zero temps, there is a company (I can't recall the name at the moment) who makes cases with pre-built peltier coolers built in, with all the necessary equipment.

Vapochill ?

Then buy a liquid nitrogen tank for him and tell him just to spray it at the computer every once in a while...

whats funny, he probably meant, "money aint a thing, this guy has $2000 to spend" :)

It must be a homie computer, due to the "aint no thang" in the subject, needs some rims and a loud stereo.

E6400 (With a >500mhz FSB on the DS3 and the CPUs x8 multiplier you could run 4ghz if the stepping will take it)
D9GMH(B6-3) IC (Crucial Ballistix PC8000 or DDR21000)
Asus P5B DLX or DS3P(only because its much easier to replace the NB cooler, but both can go over 500mhz FSB)
a 8800GTX
And other random things that you need to make a whole PC.

yeah, but how can you even justify spending $250 on something that has absolutely no value?

Buy him an E-machine P3 setup and paint it real nice using some flourescent colors ..

oooooo ....shiny ...

I can tell you from experience, that it is a bad idea to sell someone who knows nothing about computers, a very high end machine.

Unless you make a lot of profit off of it.

The reason being that such machines usually require more maintenance and know how then the average PC, and guess who will end up doing all that maintenance... thats right YOU! So unless you plan on charging this person for all the extra work your going to end up doing down the road, you may want to reconsider and sell them an average PC.

Then again if your the type of person who has no life and is willing to spend all this time putting up with all the work that they will throw your way, go for it, Hopefully they live close to you :)

thats why I don't build machines for people. They expect you to come fix it, when they get viruses / spyware from
a.) not keeping virus scanner / spyware scanners up-to-date
b.) be SO FREAKIN gullible, and clicking on EVERYTHING in the world

I politely tell them. "There's nothing wrong with the computer, YOU JUST INSTALLED CRAP ON IT, AND FAILED TO MAINTAIN THE VIRUS SUBSCRIPTION!"

And they tell you "Well, I was surfing ummm this (porn) website, and it popped up a warning that my computer was insecure that I should install ______ software. So I did, and now everytime I search for something I get a pop-up" etc. Or "my computer is really slow, and I keep getting pop-ups"

freakin IDIOTS!

It would be wise to add a 3 year virus & spyware scanner subscription in there, so they can't let it expire. (set everything on auto update, etc.)

One of many reasons why I won't build computers for people, much less help them with problems. I work for an ISP and see so many screwed up computers most people would go insane. Thank God we are only responsible for the modem, and nothing past it.

True that. Whenever they say, "Well, I was surfing ummm this website" I automatically say you were looking at porn weren't you?! And they look at me like I just shot them!

IDIOTS! But I make more money that way. I charge $15 to reinstall Windows, $75 to extensively scan their stupid files and put them back in, another $100 to make sure that they have anti-virus software and shit and ANOTHER $50 so that I can test it out to make it operates properly. Hey sucks to them, rocks to me b/c it makes my wallet fatter! LOL! :D

But if it is someone else I will gladly reinstall windows for $5 and install the drivers for free too. Why does BB charge $100 just to reinstall a freaking program!?? Thats the reason why people keep on coming back to my shop. At least I tell the truth not, "This part is broken so it'll be $1500 to replace it. Thank you for letting us steal your money have a great day!" (exageration) At my store we say"hmm it looks like this connector isn't working properly. Give me 15mins to fix it and test it. Good as new that will be $4 Thank you for not going to BB and listening to their lies! Have a great day!"

If I hear another person say that they were supposed to pay $100+ just to reinstall windows I'll go insane!

Here's what I'd look at if I had an unlimited supply of money, haha

VapoChill XE Phase Cooling (runs around -30 through to -70C, I believe that's one kick ass feature to brag about, along with the INCREDIBLE overclocking potential that thing brings) - 900
Intel QX6700 - 1100
Intel BOXD975XBX2LKR - 270
4x 1Gb Mushkin XP-6400 DDR2 800 - 1000
Any high end Chipset cooler with LEDs - 70
Kingwin 700W Power supply with window - 120
2x Western Digital 720Gb 7200RPM SATA hard drive - 600
2x Western Digital 150Gb 10,000RPM Raptor SATA2 hard drives - 600
Any CD/DVD burner on the market that looks good - 100
2x eVGA 8800GTX (hacked drivers) - 1200
5x Electric blue Cold Cathode Tubes - 20
Backlit 5.25" bay Fan Controller - 50
4x Blue LED case fans - 20
1x Aegia Physics accelerator - 250

Total: About $6,480 USD

That's my dream computer, and if your friend's got the money, I'd say, GO FOR IT. Every damn part on that thing put together would make one of the best overclocking systems on the planet, lol.

does that vapo have a windowed case? ..if not , then all those bling bling led's are going to go to waste .. :p

..and why not go with a PC P&C 1KW psu?

..and I dont think that I would go with just "any" DVD DL +/-RW drive just on looks, but your 100buck price tag is about right for a "high end" drive .. (tho I have ran this $60 rosewill one for over a year and its still going strong)

Yes, windowed case of course, lol. Cold Cathode tubes inside a case without a window?!?!?! haha. Yeah, the P&C would do also. I forgot to put a 5.25" Power supply for the 8800GTXs. That's another 50-100 dollars :) and "looks good" to me, means, performs well and is reliable.

There is no need to justify the cost of something if money is no object.

i guess you arent hearing me. the nic does NOTHING. spend the $250 on something else.....video card, sound card, monitor, porn, your girlfriend, whatever. dont waste your money on something that does nothing. spend it on something that does.

Yeah, I laughed too, I wouldn't use that POS NIC if it were free LOL!

I'd use it if it was free. Just b/c it looks cool.

But I agree it seems fairly worthless. Its like paying $200 for a fancy fan. A $5 fan does the same thing.

I'd not want that big assed POS taking up one of my PCI slots:)

If anything the Killer NIC causes more issues than fixes. There are so many people with problems who were dumb enough to buy it.

I have built a number of PCs for people, but I make it very clear when I do so that they are not to call me for any reason if tech-support becomes and issue. Sure, I have had people back out after the lecture (and probably for my better good) but some agree, and while I have gotten a call or two in the past due to spyware/viruses/etc after I remind them of what we had said before, I have never had any serious issues.

i guess you're not hearing me. it doesnt matter whether or not it does anything. the point is, nothing is a waste of money if money is no object. whether or not money really is an object to the guy is irrelevant. whether or not the nic does anything is also irrelevant. i dont care if you'd use one or not. im merely stating that the guy who recommended it was justified in the fact that the op said money was no object.

Thank you. Glad to see someone else understands why I suggested that.
