What would be the best overall? Gaming mostly.

Also, is it just me or did CPU prices hella drop? The FX 55 was retailing at about $500 a year ago and now it's just under $140, which is the same price I bought my 3000+ last year (which is now, like, $40).

Yeah know the know the feeling. I paid almost 200 for a 3200+ last year.

Well any way I have my sights set on the Opty 170

Agreed. I just upgraded from an FX-55 running at 2.835 to an Opty 170 at 2.700 and it smokes the 55. I could not push my 8800GTS with the 55. Things felt forced with the 55. I got great improvements with the opty. Bencmarks went way up. Games run much better and so do general tasks. The system is very fast and things are just much smoother.

I am very pleased with the upgrade.

I don't know about it being the best option.. But my 3700+ SD hit 2.64 (240fbs @ 11x) will little effort and with a new PSU I'm sure 2.8 or 3.0 will be possible.

Newegg.com has them for $89.00.

The 165 opteron. Get it from newegg. the lateest ones from there are geting 2.7 with stock voltages or just abit more. ( CCBBE 0616 XPMW ) the chip should be able to get 2.9-3.0Ghz with 1.5v

If you are going to overclock go with the 165, if not then you will benefit more from the added speed of the 170.

Yeah, you should thank Intel for bringing out Core2Duo... forced AMD to slash their prices to compete :)

Anyway, a very happy Opteron 165 owner here. It's the best bet as long as you don't mind overclocking. If you want stock, then a regular x2 might be better for you (less cache but possibly higher clock speed.)
