Anyone have this problem with current drivers or a 7800GTX?

Ever now and then my computer, after booting, will hang at the windows screen. It will then give me an error, nv4_disp, stating that the video driver is stuck in an infinite thread. It says to update your drivers to the most current or the problem is the hardware itself.

Now the solution to my problem is to roll back my drivers to 78.01. Once I do this the problem is cured. I don’t know whether the video card (7800GTX OC) itself is the problem or the drivers. Does this qualify for a RMA? Anyone have a clue? Thanks.

Me too!!!!!!!

I still have this problem also, even after I just formatted my hard drive and did a clean install of windows.

Even unchecking "Enable write combining" under Troubleshoot tab in Display Properties (Settings, Advanced) did not solve the problem.

Mind you, I have two 7900 GTX's in SLI. With just one of those cards, it still happens. Ugh! Must be the newer drivers...

Also, if Microsoft is blaming it on the drivers after this error happens and you upload the data log to M$, then.. that means it's Nvidia's fault for sure.

Exactly, I would have to repair windows every single time before I found out it was the nv4_disp file and the ntoskrl file. It would drive me nuts coming home from work ready to play and havint to deal with this crap.

I tried to send a ticket to XFX for my card and its been saying for the past day that it can not process my message try again later. Ergh.

Hi Petrucci_M3,

What I'd suggest doing is to uninstall the drivers and run Driver Cleaner through to clean out any remaining driver files.

Then install the latest drivers and see how you go.

It's fixed that problem for me in the past.

Cheers.

I own a 7800 GTX 256 and I did not experience anything as you described. I have 93.71 drivers installed. Try to do what halo14 said. It might be as simple as that (if you haven't already)

That is odd that only the 78.01 driver works as this is an old driver. What drivers did you try before the 78.01 and did not of the 9 series drivers work? Did you already start a support ticket at www.xfxforce.com and if so what is the ticket number? Let us know if using driver cleaner helps at all. Do you have a TV tuner card or other add in cards installed in the PCI slots? If so you can try removing them to see if there is a possible conflict.

Hey thanks for the reply guys. I'll go ahead and try that method and report back. :)

All right, looking forward to that.

For me, why should I uninstall the drivers and do a driver-cleaner, if it's my first install on a recently-formatted, clean WinXP install?

Hey,

Yeah I tried the most recent one. I believe it was the 93.71. I had to roll back my driver because it was giving me that error. NV4_DISP, saying that it was stuck on an infinite loop. I just used drive cleaner and I'm about to reinstall the most recent driver and see if what happens. Also I tried to create a ticket but it said it couldn't because it says "Error creating your ticket, please try again later."

Petrucci_M3, If the driver cleaner did not help please PM me with your contact info and I will have a rep get a hold of you to help resolve this and help start a support ticket if needed.
