Firstly greetings to everyone, I am new here and please pardon my English as it is not my first language.

My problem is this weird CPU noise I've had for 2 years, whevener my CPU is under load or stress it produces a very annoying "beeping" sound(or "chirping" as others say) which although is not loud but could be easily heard over the sounds of other hardwares togather. To best describe it, it resembles the sound of electricity leakage and I am quite sure it's emitting from the CPU or below by ear-searching. I've changed a motherboard and a power supply but the noise persisted. Fortunately it does not seem to impact the system or the CPU itself as I have not noticed any damage or dropping performance, or yet.

I've been confused by this issue every since I built this computer 2 years ago, so if anyone here has any suggestions or advice please educate me the why and how to fix this alien-like otherworldly evil that keeps exhausting me. Thanks very much!

System:
P4 3.6G Prescott 775
Seagate 200G
Inno3d 7950GT
Audigy 2 ZS

Its impossible for a cpu to make noise, have you tried replacing the heatsink/fan?

Not impossible. The bottoms of the CPU packages have capacitors mounted on them. Capacitors can make some noise when they get stressed or old.

I agree with the guy suggesting replacing the fan, not because i think it is the fan chirping, but because of the fact that solid state electronics tend to only make noise when they are overheating and since you have a prescott 3.6 i would guess that it is overheating. Try getting a better fan since that is going to way cheaper than getting a new processor.

I bet it's a capacitor or an induction coil (the toriod things) around the CPU socket... rather than the CPU it's self.

Mine do that too.

I've yet to see this happen.

I hear it from AMD processors, but it isn't a capacitor thats for sure. If it is the capacitor making noises you have a bigger problem on your hands (like if you hear a POW noise, then its dead and you have a power issue).

My $.02 of the day.

Yeah my Opty 165 is also making that "chirping" sound. It's pretty annoying cuz I have the case rite next to me. I'm going to change the hsf soon. I don't think 42C is that high, so what else could be making the noise?

well since i hear video cards and motherbaords make this chirping sound sometimes, i'm going to have say its capacitors. Like a cap being pushed a little too hard. It happens in some games, and it also used to happened when i overclocked my DS3 further thanit was willing. the noice was usually paired with an unstable overclock as well. That would make sense if components are not able to handle the current.

My old system made that chirping noise--but it worked fine for 3.5 years. I decided to upgrade, and I don't believe the parts ever failed. You may simply be able to ignore it.

Open computer case, pull off fan power wire from mobo while computer is running.

If the chirping birds go away then you know your problem is the fan.

If the birds don't go away then call an exterminator. This isn't rocket science.

Remember to do the same testing with your graphics card.

I had that issue in the past... (electric leaky noise) it was a power supply, not the CPU.

definitely a power issue then.

The change of power draw, under load, is causing something to vibrate in the audible specturm.

Familliar with the first generation Mac Book pros? You could vary the level of load, in order to WRITE SONGS with the chiping noises they made!

Sounds like your motherboard more than anything, as mentioned. I've had shitty soyo (remember them?) do the same. Needlesstosay, that soyo (even being canterwood 875) couldn't handle my handmedown 2.4c (previous owner ran stable at 3.7 all day long) at more than 3.1ghz. Lousy fsb limitation. Had the same capacitor issues with that board, stock and not. Didn't bother to rma it since reviews for the board were all in line with the max fsb I was able to get. It was one of the free after rebate ones that we saw in hotdeals two years ago. Sold the board soon after for $60 and just got a cheap springdale 865 that brought more life into my cpu.

I got a new power supply, the Ultra V series I'm replacing the 380W antec that came with my Sonata. Also if it's a motherboard problem, does anyone else with the same board as me have the same problem?

Just posted a similar thread. Two identical systems make the same sound under the same circumstances.

My guess, however, is that it's a coil or cap near the CPU socket, not the CPU itself. Could be wrong though.

well as I said I've changed several cpu fans and noise still here. the second mobo I replaced the old one with has this problem even worse in which the chirping sounds almost nonstop. my p4 3.6 prescott is at 48C idle and never exceeds 60C under load.

one explanation I found on another site claims this noise to be generated by the voltage regulating unit on the mobo and its absolutely normal and unharming. at least I am not so paraniod as before.
