I wish he would have wrote more

I did find the issue about the battery in the controllers interesting.

"You may have heard that the batteries for the wireless controller can’t be replaced and that you will have to get rid of the controller itself when its internal battery fails. While Sony claims it will take years for this to happen"

Hopefully the controllers won't turn into infernos like their laptops did otherwise we will have a generation of handless children.

...what issue?
It's been known that the batteries have a 3 year-or-so lifespan and that Sony is going to replace them when they die.

There is still the issue of running out of juice during a power gaming session. Did they say if you could plug in the controller and keep rolling? The 360 solution was ideal with the removal batteries and charging dock. It's nice to know that there is always a fresh battery waiting for you if the one in the controller dies.

you can just plug in the usb cable and charge while playing

Agreed.

However, the lack of a removal battery and the article stating that it came with a "short" USB cable for charging would seem to suggest that this problem was not well thought out by Sony.

Anyone know what kind of battery life the controllers will have?

I've had my PS3 controller un-plugged after a charge for a few weeks. I came back to work today to play a little and it still ran fine. I was playing 3~4 hours a day. You can also charge it with ANY USB device. But I do not know how long the retail USB cables are, but mine was a good 8 feet.

And yeah, you can play and have it still charge.

You do know that they're not replacing them for free, right? It's a service just like Apple's iPod battery service. It'll probably end up being cheaper and easier to buy a new remote.

There are also instructions in the manual how to "dispose" of the old battery.

But if you follow the instructions in reverse with a battery you buy on ebay or from some battery replacement site like they have with iPods you could easily replace it yourself for cheap.

The battery should last anywhere from 1.5-3 years... maybe more even...

Unless you are sitting 15'+ away from the console looking at a 106" screen...that's an awfully long USB cable.

Oh well, I'm not gonna have one of these for a few years anyway.

Yeeeeah... because so many gamers have that. :\

And for the .01% of gamers that do, they can always charge it and wait to play later. Problem solved.

For someone who appears to have read up about the PS3 maybe you should put your brain into gear before posting. As others have said ANY of that style of usb cable will do  Hell most of us will have a fairly long one hanging around anyway......

PS3 = LAM0000RS COZ = SHORT USB CABLE!!!!!!360 ROXS!!!

I must have about 10 usb charging cables gathering dust from all the gadgets ive had. I cant beleive people are moaning about the length of the PS3s usb charging cable, its pathetic. Personally im glad the cable is short, i cant stand cables wrapped up making a mess of my setup, constantly having to tuck wires out of sight. If your that bothered go to your local and pick a 5m usb charging cable for £1.95 or a 3m gold plated charging cable for £1.50 !!! If the rumoured 20+hr battery life isnt enough for you then i think you got issues.
If the cable was 5m i bet some of you guys would say it was too long, why the fuck didnt sony put a shorter cable in.
I also cant see what the fuss is about with a non replaceable battery for the controller. Yer i suppose its handy if you can put normal batteries in if you want to be wireless all the time if your rechareable ones run out. But then i think if people did that everytime they are gonna lose a lot of cash over a long period of time, so the way i wiegh it up is if you 360 owners (me included) use say £30 of normal batteries in our wireless controllers a year why not buy a second wireless controller that can be kept on charge if the other fails/runs out?

1. 90% of you guys on this forum Hate Sony and wont Buy a PS3 anyway so thats a problem solved so stop stressing lol.
2. If you go by the off the street shitty rechargeable batteries you can buy you get on average 800-900 recharges (Good for 1000 recharges is usually claimed), thats 18000 hrs of gaming or around 2yrs solid gaming for you numbnuts.
3. I dont see/hear people moaning like fuck that they cant put aa batteries in their psp/ds/laptops/mobile phones/ipod/walkman. (although i suppose a replacement battery can be bought for some of those).

If the batteries are Lithium-Ion, which is extremely likely, then the battery life should start deteriorating within the first year, and it should be down to 1/4 or less of the original life span in 2 to 3 years. The time line start from the day the battery is PRODUCED, not when you first start using it, and how much or little it is used, or if it is used at all, should have no real effect on this life-span. A few batteries will wear down within a year though, and some will last 4+ years though.

On the positive side though the announced initial life of these batteries is 30 hours on a 2.5 hour charge. Most likely it will be more like 25 hours since such things are usually over-stated, but that is still very good. If after 2 or 3 years the battery is at 1/4 original life span that is still over 6 hours which is more than most people play in one session anyway.

So my overall estimate is that it should be very rare that a controller doesn't end up being reasonably functional for at least 3 years as long as the intial life is really 25+ hours.

Whoa! Sorry if I hit a nerve!

So why not supply a longer cable if the intention is to have it as the charge and play solution? With the cost of cables these days it would have been an cheap and easy way to show that they have thought of this problem and provided a solution in-box as opposed to having consumers purchase another cable.

The readers of [H] would fall under the small percentage of enthusiasts and probably don't see the big deal in this. The vast majority of people will not have extra 10' USB cables kicking around (which is the average length for corded controllers), since most devices will only package 3 or 6 foot long cables.

Sorry if it feels like I slammed your precious PS3, but I can only call it like it is. I also have my gripes about the 360 that I've posted in other threads. Take off your Sony colored glasses and realize that it's a consumer's right to point out things that could have been done better.

Will I buy a PS3? Absolutely, if for nothing else, Gran Turismo alone is good enough for me. Do I have to like everything that is Sony and all decisions they make in their products? Nope.

I just hope these batteries don't cause a fire while somebody is playing, and they have to do another recall. :D

I kid, I kid...

Lmao maybe you should've read the first line of your post after typing the BS you just spouted ;) Oh the irony! I'll advise again, put brain into gear before posting, does stop you looking like a plank

Assumptions indeed, how does the saying go? :D :D

Thats the most rediculous response ive ever seen, all he said is they didn't think of the battery issue very well. When did he even say anything about the 360, get a grip.

The fact of the matter is, the Xbox360 solution is better, however the PS3's solution is still quite good, considering you dont have to pay for the battery up front.

EDIT: Your second reponse is just as stupid.

I think the PS3 solution is better. ;)

The ps3 battery is the same as the xbox360 battery without the hot swap function, that makes the ps3 battery worse. Simple.

I like the ability to play while charging and charge it directly. I already have every outlet used up and some of those already with power strips... I don't want another thing plugged into the wall. Simplest.

WTF? You can do that with the 360...

Nevermind... I was unclear about the play and charge thing... I am confused what "hot swapping" is then.

I think what he means is that the battery is removeable. So you have the option to have a spare one on charge, then just swap them over when it runs out. Just one extra option, rather than having the cord attached when it needs to be charged (like both do, but the 360 has the option not to).

Couldn't you do a similar thing (for 1 player) and just have a recharged sixaxis ready to go...

Sure, just seems more expensive way to do it.

Hang on a second, i dont know if this is the case now but when i got my premium 360, the wireless controller came with a standard battery pack, i had to pay an extra £20 for microsofts own non universal rechargable wire and battery pack!!! Can someone confirm if this is still the case? If it is the case then why did no one moan about it!!?
Surely PS3 controller + Universal USB Charger cable = Less or equal to a 360 wireless Controller + Rechargable kit??

Since you would have to buy 2 of the MS play and charge packs for this to work isn't that like $40?

Not that much cheaper than another controller and another controller is much more useful.

Tigerblade... wtf do Americans have to do with anything?

This isn't the limey circle jerk forum.

You can buy the battery packs alone for around $11.99, or you can choose to buy the play and charge kit which includes the battery pack and recharge cable for $19.99.

Oh... I didn't realize you could buy the battery packs alone... I just saw the kits for $20...

So even then it would be a lil over $30... still only $20 more and you get a whole nother controller...
