24" Widescreen CRT (FW900) From Ebay arrived,Comments.

That's because of the video card's drivers that can support 1080p, right? When connecting directly to an Xbox360, only the monitor's internal drivers (supported table of VESA resolutions, etc..) come into play.

Well, 360 has a videocard and VGA output just like a PC.. and considering 360's 1080p output doesnt even work on Sony XBR 2/3 TV's yet these TVs work fine on demo PS3's @ 1080p.. sounds like theres a glitch on MS's side.

The 360 does not have a driver .inf file for Sony GDM-FW900 (unlike Windows XP), so there's no support really. IMHO, I really think that it's dependent on the official VESA support within the monitor itself for that specific resolution if there are no driver .inf's.

But, it's interesting how you state that the XBR TV's work just fine at 1080p with PS3 demos while it won't work properly with 360's....

I'm pretty sure the cropping IS NOT an issue with the FW900. The scaler on the 360 crops the image on my CRT HDTV via component, even though I have the tv calibrated for about 3% overscan. A lot of other people have had the same problems since launch.

Wouldn't it be great if MS would actually fix this.....or better yet support 1920x1200. One can only wish.

It looks like just a fix for 360's the update killed, and not for 1080p. But at least it gives me some hope.

semi-good news everyone
I now know the MS has knowledge of this 1080p issue and is working on it. No timetable for a fix but at least they know about and are supposedly working on it. This info comes straight from Major Nelson's podcast.
I have used all of my MS contacts as well as Krevniks great information to get out what the problem might be. Hopefully this info will expedite this issue.
Even more hope.

Microsoft just rolled out the much awaited update to the Xbox 360 dashboard including -- among other things -- support for 1080p over VGA and component but for some gamers and error screen was all they got. The company still hasn't said exactly what it believe is causing the issue, although some have said it may be due to either frequency supported by the VGA cable or the way it syncs with monitors, but Major Nelson confirmed on his podcast this morning that engineers are aware of the issue and are working on a fix. The TVs that suffer the problem appear to be some Sony (most notably LCD XBRs) and Samsung models that should be able to accept the 1080p input but as of yet, don't. Affected owners should hopefully have their mere 720p experience rectified soon, but will it be in time for the HD DVD player launch?
Even better.

Guys, all this talk about the X-Box is swell, but can I run a SUPER NINTENDO through this monitor
Non-emulated pl0x!

Damn, just a few minutes ago my monitor blurred, like it was going to do the "pop" thing, got sharp again, then blurred, and is apparently going to stay that way. :(

I think these monitors were purposely designed to commit suicide eventually.

EDIT: Yay, I decided to watch TV, about 2 hours later I heard the "pop" and it is in focus again.. I hope it doesn't do that again. Scared the shit outta me!

I dont know what ima gonna do when my HP 7217A dies :(

I refuse to go LCD!!!!!!!

CRT till death!!!!!!!!!

welp. i've converted.
i bought a 22" widescreen LCD. the samsung 225bw.
the black level isnt as good(obviously), but the color reproduction is excellent and i dont notice ANY lag during gameplay. i certainly recommend this LCD monitor, it rocks. plus its kinda cheap, even compared to some 20" widescreen LCDs.

im still using my FW900 on my 2nd rig though. and I definitely still love it! i just never though an LCD could meet my needs, but it seems i have found one....

I have been thinking of getting one of those 22" LCDs as a 2nd monitor... unfortunately I would have to figure out a way to hang it from the ceiling or something.. there is really nowhere to put it on my desk with this hulk! :D

Wolverine, that pic you posted of GRAW, was that playing in 1080p? If it was, was it playing smoothly? Does it look any better then at 720p?

This is a USB to Serial Port converter with drivers that allows us to connect the monitor to the WinDAS software on newer motherboards without a serial port.

Yay! My first picture on this legendary thread.

Hmmm.. so the CRT has official VESA support for 1920x1080 (16:9) resolution that is used for 1080i or 1080p output on the consoles... that makes it strange how the Xbox360's 1080i is not excellently (perfectly) outputted to this monitor.

Bo Fox, that USB thing you bought works just like that 30 doller windas cable?

No, it's for connecting the windas cable to your computer if you do not have a serial port on your motherboard.

I just got one of these sweet things and had a few questions similar to the one asked earlier.

Do the quicktime trailers use a 2.35:1 aspect ratio and is that why I have huge (1.5 inch) black bars? I was really looking forward to being able to take advantage of most of the screen space.

What does 1.85:1 content look like on this? Are the bars pretty small? Does anyone know where I can download some free content that uses this aspect ratio?

How come this seems to matter so much for movie content and how come the 360's image takes up the whole screen?

Thank you.

Edit:

I downloaded the new quicktime alternative and I let it use direct show filters for better peformance and it is fitting the movie to the screen by default now. I think it is doing some type of stretching though(similar to using media player classics video frame options-- but I can't quite tell). Whatever it is doing it still looks great.

to answer a few of your questions: This site has HD movie samples: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx

yes most widescreen stuff thats in 16:9 will have small black bars on top and bottom. I use the pan and scan mode in PowerDVD to make it full screen (you loose a tiny bit on the sides of some movies, doesn't bother me). Also with the xbox360, I stretched the screen to the top and the bottom so a very small portion of the screen is not visible on either side. Again, it doesn't bother me as it isn't noticeable.

Yeah that was GRAW at 1080p... it runs the same as 720p.... i believe the 360 doesn't render it at 1080p, it just upscales the image so there is no performance difference unless the game is being rendered at 1080p (currently no games support this). I think the colors look more saturated when the 360 is set to 1080p output. and the image is a little sharper. Its really nothing drastic. I was hoping the update would render the menus in 1080p, but it doesn't, they are upscaled as well.

That's really not bad at all, better color and sharpness with no performance hit.. awesome.

I just got a FW900 Off-Lease and had just a few questions...

There is slight mis-convergence in the upper right and lower left regions of the screen (slight red lines that I cannot get rid of through menu) and out of focus at corners.

Would a Sony Technician be able to open the monitor and fix these problems(especially convergence since I see focus can be done manually)?

A question to mathesar...

A year or so ago you posted pics of the Gamecube outputting 480p described as via VGA. The accessory you posted pictured the Japanese D-Terminal cable with a "VGA" sticker on it. Is that really a modified to VGA cable or just the D-Terminal?

thanks

I have the same cable, and it is a modified cable for VGA. It is VERY easy to do.

Hi guys! I'm thinking about joining the FW900 club! ;)

ANyway I have a question: What's the refresh rate of this monitor [or any CRT monitor for that matter] when it's hooked up to the X360? Is it a standard 50Hz as on PAL TV's or the X360 is able to tell the difference between a monitor and a TV and provides a higher refresh rate? I just really hope I dont have to watch a low refresh rate while gaming...

Nah, no need to worry about the refresh rate, really. Standard NTSC TV's (CRT screens) have a refresh rate of only 30 Hz interlaced, which is equal to a non-interlaced refresh of 60Hz found on common CRT monitors for the PC. Of course, a higher refresh like 85 Hz is always better, but 60Hz is usually more tolerable with slower-paced single player games than with browsing the internet (bright flickering screen).

Right now I'm using a TFT monitor, but when I was using CRT anything below 100Hz kinda bothered my eyes....

I need help BAD!! I woke up, turned on my pc to see that my convergence is way off all over the screen and parts of the image are distorted. For example, the red bar on the hardforums that says UserCP FAQ etc is not perfectly straight, flat.It has little dips in it.

What the heck caused this and what can I do to repair it? I tried degaussing.

Would a subwoofer sitting within three feet of my monitor (FW-900) cause the monitor to display white as more of a dirty white?

Jenova, it's more likely your color temperature. Try playing with expert RGB Gains. The ideal temperature for color trueness is 6500k, while a lot of people like the brighter blue-white of 9500k.

Guys, I just got my monitor. It has two faint lines. 1 across the middle and another dividing the upper half. Is this normal at all, and should I return the monitor? They're very faint, but annoying, straight across, thin, and clearly internal.

It's normal, all of them have that.

This is normal , All aperture grille based CRTs have these lines (even my XBR CRT HDTV has them) You should get used to it after awhile and wont even notice them anymore.
