NVIDIA 680i Launch & eVGA's new nForce 680i SLI Mobo - The nForce 680i SLI board is eVGA’s flagship motherboard with support for the Core 2 Duo and Quad that uses NVIDIA’s new chipset. eVGA is NVIDIA’s launch partner for the 680i and the motherboard is available today! Put this one on your short list.

I have beat on NVIDIA and their flaky nForce chipsets for a long time. I have gone as far to say there was no reason to even purchase one when it came to an Intel-based processor board, but I have today changed my mind. The eVGA nForce 680i motherboard is easily one of the best enthusiast motherboards I have ever used.

Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor.

Awesome review guys, and I feel all the better about the order I just placed for this board now.

Damn I LOVE THE [H]!!!

Two awesome reviews in one day, the 8800 and the 680i. Going to pick them both up soon.

That's cool. I might get this is it's cheaper than the Asus Striker coming out.

I'm concerned that my Thermalright Ultra-120 won't fit. But I guess I'll know when it gets here!

Great review..from Kyle & Company,But I wanted to see BFGTECH motherboard review?? ..where is that one..to go with my BFGTECG 8800 GTX..
Looked around but no one has it..anybody see that one??

Hurin I just order the same heatsink for my motherboard..I hope it fit also..in transit ($39.99)

$269? woof. I had a nice schwing going throughout that entire review until I saw the price. Maybe I'm not hardcore enough, but I find it hard to swallow $269 for the board. $200'ish I could see. Anyone else think the pricing is a bit over?

Oh yeah, awesome hardware review as usual, wouldn't expect any less! :p

Give it some time..as always the price will come down..
You know they always get the early "HAVE TO HAVE IT" folks :)

Wow. Nice price. I think I paid $49. Anyways, speak of the devil, mine just arrived (HS, not MB). I think we should be able to get it to mount in at least one direction (hopefully!). Whether that direction will complement overall case airflow is the question.

I'm hoping that the curved nature of the NB chipset cooler will just give enough clearance to allow me to mount this thing so the wide part can be on that axis (with air blowing towards back of case). But, we'll have to wait and see! :(

Very nice, I'd like the non-SLi version, but might have to jump on this anyways.

What were your results with the Conroe chips? Allendales are fairly easy to overclock and it would be nice to see some results when using air cooling also. Not everyone is interested in using a Koolance system when overclocking. ;)

Thanks for the review - sounds like quite the motherboard! I was a little bit confused about the section about running the memory asynchronously. When you said it had problems did you mean that the stability when overclocking was hindered when running without the FSB ? Mem locked, or was the performance just degraded?

Right now I'm torn between this and the BadAxe 2. Do you guys think my Tuniq Tower will fit on this board?

Uh-oh. I may have spoke too soon. . . check out this page on the Xbit review. Looks like there may be some resistors that will interfere with the Thermalright Ultra-120's backplate. Now I really can't wait to take a look at this.

I just got a duo core 2 6800 and a Asus p5n 32 sli se deluxe and i noticed the p5n really trailing in those benchmarks. Is that the same board as the sli se deluxe? i just got this board and processor and it looks like the 680 really makes it look like its laggin. btw nice review:)

If caps are your worry, then the ABIT IN9-32X is the board to wait for.

Regarding the problem with those resistors on the back getting in the way of backplates used by many heatsinks. . .

I sent an email to Thermalright. This needs verification, but I've already placed an order for a Thermalright SI-128 just in case the Ultra-120 doesn't work.

Here's their response:

Hi xxxx, The board is so new that we have not gotten a chance to test it yet but it looks like the backplate will indeed hit the capacitors on the backside of the board.
Here's what I originaly wrote:
Hi,

I just placed an order for the new EVGA nForce 680i SLI Mobo for Intel CPUs.

However, reading a review of it here (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/ch...680i-sli_6.html), at the bottom of the page, it appears that there are resistors/capacitors on the underside of the motherboard that might interfere with the backplate for the Ultra-120.

The EVGA motherboard is based on the NVIDIA reference design for the 680i. Have you had any feedback yet on whether this is an issue. If not, I'll let you know when I receive my motherboard and can test the fit!

Thanks!

xxxxx

why wait on the BFG model when you can get the EVGA model now?

they are going to be identical other than packaging, and ehem.....warranty terms
;)

yeah i'm gonna wait for it to drop, the kentsfield i know isn't so i'm gonna grab that first and wait for the early birds to get theirs

What is EVGA's build quality? Is this their first motherboard? It's a reference design but each manufacturer is making their own boards correct?

Found the answer to my own question, all these boards are made by Nvidia's reference baord maker and packaged by different companies like they do the high-end video cards.

Well after I finished reading this review I went over to clubit and got this board with a e6600. Just need more mula for the 8800gts/8800gtx ( pocketbook will dictate which) plus ram and os, I would be embarrassed to put winxp home on it.

I'd wait on a better board/different maker... EVGA doesn't even have any downloads/bioses/drivers listed on their website for this board.

Since it's a reference board, maybe BIOSes will be available through NVIDIA at some point? :p

I want a board that can support the 8x interface of my LSILogic 320-2E Raid card. Will the x8 slot do that, or is it intended for graphics only? My current setup is an A8N32 Sli Deluxe with the card in the second PCI-E slot, but it only gives me 2x PCI-E lanes, since the slot is intended for graphics. I don't actually "need" the speed to be higher than 2x, but it would be nice if I could find out for sure if the x8 slot actually offered x8 speed for non graphics add on cards.

Hi, first post on the board, but I've been keeping up with the site daily for about 3 months now and less often in the past.

Just looking at the raw numbers on the benchmarks in the article, it would seem to me that the Intel P965 is overall the better performer here. I'm not clear about all the hype. What have I missed?

Yes, the overclocking ability seems to be top-notch, again, the numbers... P965 was better if not almost the same in almost every benchmark.

Intel-based motherboards do not support SLi (unless you use hacked drivers. . . and not all driver versions have hacks).

So, if you want SLi, and Intel, this is currently (probably) the best choice.

Yes, now I am beginning to understand... ;)

What other manufacturers are coming out with 680i boards before the Christmas rush begins?

I love new tech, but jumping on the first thing off the wagon makes me nervous. Does ABIT, or ASUS/Gigabyte (since they're now the same company) have anything coming?

eVGA, XFX, and BFG are coming out with ones that are essentially identical (this reference model). Abit and Asus are going more old-school and creating their own design based on the 680i chipset. I don't know if DFI's is reference or custom, but I suspect the latter since everyone is so excited about it.

I'm looking forward to the Asus model. It looks to be really impressive. When it comes out, I'll likely sell my eVGA one and swap. I only made the jump here because I'm currently computer-less (sold the rig in signature).

Yeah DFI better be coming out with a Lanparty board based on the 680i chipset. Im sure alot of people are wanting a DFI Lanparty board for the Conroes and are also kinda getting mad DFI hasnt released one yet.

I think DFI's efforts are being directed at the RD600. I'm pretty sure DFI will come out with a 680i, but I think it will be awhile since they are still working on the RD600.
