Best console for a 6 year old?

I am, I mean santa is going to give my son a console for christmas this year, but I'm admittedly "out of the loop" when it comes to kids and video games.

We're sticking to last generation here. Available or not, the xbox 360, WII, and PS3 are out. Just too much money.

I have an X-Box myself, so no need for another one.

That narrows it down to game cube, and PS2.

Looking for something good for a 6 year old obviously, but still want a good system. I've honestly never played a game on a GC, so I know nothing about the graphics, gameplay etc. I don't want him to ask for a next gen system next year lol, I'd rather ask for that from my wife for ME ;)

Thanks In Advance for any input!!!

gamecube, better graphics than ps2 and has more kid games. Also cheaper and more durable

Gamecube is never a bad pick but if this is for a 6 year old you could try to find a Sega Dreamcast and get a ton of cheap used games. Or go old school and digg up a SNES :D

I plan on starting with the basics when I get around to having kids.. From the NES up. ;)

I know this isn't really a console, but what about a Game Boy Advance? There are a lot of good, cheap games out there that a 6 year old and a 36 year old can both enjoy. Plus, cheap=bonus for Santa!

PS2 or a DS, gamecube is more known for being kid friendly, but pretty much every cartoon\kids show out there has a PS2 game.

Extra plus: Also works on car trips.
The micro looks like the best choice if you go this route. The SP (and DS) should be less likely to get screen scratches since you close them when they're not in use.
I still think the micro is a better choice for other reasons (better screen, headphone jack).
The DS plays both GBA and DS games, and is all in all a nice toy with some good games (the new mario is great fun), but it's also more expensive.

edit: Re: Naldo
Given the quality of most film/series tie-in games, are you sure that's a plus? ;)

PS2. Great games and graphics. Games are cheaper than ever, and w/ games like ultimate spider man, etc. its the best.

At least my 5 year old loves his :)

My 4 year old son loves his Gamecube and he's had it for about 6 months,
he has these games:
Mario cart, Mario party 6, Mario Sunshine
Cars, Fzero gx, The Hulk, Sonic collections,
Spoungebob the movie, Rampage UD,
Cell damage, Finding Nemo.
And my advice to another father would be Gamecube"used with warranty at Gamestop for $59.99" and Mario Sunshine and Mariokart "should be able to get these for $19.99 now" and he'll be one happy camper.

another vote for gamecube. Playing mariokart and other such games with little kids is a blast. Cheap price wise, but nothing to cough at in the games department.

I am not a nintendo fan at this moment, If I had a child same age as yours I would not think twice about getting a gamecube, lots of child friendly games, better graph than ps2, and it's controls are friendlier. I would get the DS maybe for long trips otherwise no, outside time is outside time, the console is for indoor, car use or if a long visit to doctors, otherwise not on the time they could be playing. Since hes young make sure you put some limitations on the console, set up study time ect since it's easy to get addicted to gaming.

I'd go for a gamecube. Look for Donkey Konga + Konga controllers. Should still be fun, even if he has trouble with conventional controllers. Mario Party + Mic GC bundle might be your best bet if it's still around. Gamecube, 2 controllers, A mic, and Mario Party 7 all for $99.

Or go to a pawnshop of some sort, my friend went to the videogame exchange, for $50 he got a GameCube, 4 controllers and a copy of super smash brothers.

Another vote for the GameCube.

Animal Crossing, Bomberman Generation, F-Zero GX, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Kart: Double Dash!, Mario Partys 4, 5, 6, and 7, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Monkey Balls 1 and 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and many more.

If you get your kid a gamecube..

make sure to get him Eternal darkness LOL!!!! :D :D :D

scare him shitless

I would lean towards the gamecube just cause its got more kiddy games and the system itself is more child friendly .

But, the PS2 has a lot to offer that the gamecube doesn't as far as graphics, number of games etc...

Depends on the kid I guess.

You're kidding, right? PS2 was the most graphically challenged of the last generation.

I also put in a vote for GC for console and DS for portable. You could throw those things down the stairs and still have a good chance it will work fine. Not to mention that all the titles are kid friendly.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I was pretty sure about the GC myself, I had just never seen the graphics or really knew anyone who had one.

He has a GBA, that he plays with in the car, etc, but we thought he was ready for a console this year.

I don't think I can beat it at $99

ive had xbox, ps2, gamecube, 360, and pc..... id say definatly gamecube, as it is cheap (around 70 used), and has games he would like.... ps2 is geared more towards adults.... same with xbox.... and 360 or ps3 is way out of ure range of price, and pc is obviously a little to hard to work for a 6 year old and costs a lot....

gamecube has good graphics (on par with xbox or ps2)

QFT! Start out with an NES, like $25 or something used somewhere. or maybe SNES, also good. Sega Genisis, i like it too, Dreamcast, GC, those are my top choices, or a Wii if you have the money and want him to be moving around that much in the room. (dont want a broken vase and whatnot. ;))

you do know that the GC had better graphics than the PS2.. the classic example is RE4

i never cared for the way GC looked....so your opinion is yours and mine is mine.

cheers
