This is what I ordered today from Newegg.

I have an excellent Atx case from current pc. also have a 550watt Antec. PS.
I have the xi-fi music sound card. from Creative.
For hard drive I have a 320 gig Seagate with 16meg cache. ESATA. with the perpendicular tech. I also have 2 regular ultra ata hd's And Dvd+/-RW drive and a dvd-rom drive.

I Am currently running this setup.
Athlon 64-3000 Socket 939.
Gigabyte Motherboard.
2gig Dual channel ram. On those selfsame ata hard drives.
BFG 6800gt. 3dcard.

In your guys expert opinions how much of a performance improvement will I see with the new setup.. I will also order a better fan then the retail stock one. What fan would you recommend within reason? I am tryin to save enough money.. so once the new g880s from Nvidia are released.. then I will consider based on reviews and cost wether to replace the cheep 88 dollar 7600 I will be using for now.

As far as the games I play... WOW,Titan Quest.GuildWars:NF. Warhammer:Dark Crusade. Half-life2,Quake4.

IS there anything else you would suggest I do.. system wise to this setup. And is overclocking Somethign that you think I really should do? or is the performance as it is would that be fine for now? Thanks for the future Assistance.

Oh and the reasons I took the plunge.. I do love Amd. The cost of this Setup came down to it was very close to an am2 setup.. and From what I do know and from experience I have had with the Core2duos at work.. they are faster. I am not focused on only one brand of processor. And I had ordered a 7600 gt for my Agp setup.. and the company I ordered from sent me an email that they would be refunding my purchase because they couldn't get the card in stock. So looking at the fact I could spend.. 400 more and actually upgrade pretty much everything.. I decided to get it.

real nice, get that cpu to 3G and you'll notice the preformance difference over your current one
I have big typhoon on my c2d,works nice

I'd definitely OC that setup. With that board and CPU, you'd be missing out on "free" performance if you didn't. You might want 2GB of memory also at some point.

The 7600GS may be a slight step backwards in gaming performance. Are you planning to go budget on the graphics card and upgrade later? (Like the 8800GTX/GTS/etc you mentioned.)

Here's a link to Tom's VGA Chart. I already selected the 7600GS and 6800GT for ya.

Ummm dude, whats with the vid card? thats like putting a lawnmower engine in a ferrari!

At LEAST get a 7600GT, preferably something faster than that!!!

Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro (~$35 shipped) works great for me. My stock HSF from Intel was total crap.

Good luck!

You're going to lose performance in some things, going from 2gig to 1gig of ram...why? There is also no need to get ddr2 800 if you aren't going to overclock. I would also stick to that faster harddrive rather then sticking those older drives in. This will keep the case cooler, and more airflow without all those ide cables. I also agree with adam...that video card is underpowered, 7600gt or 7800gt..at least.

There is a method to my apparent madness. Yes I do plan on upgrading the 3dcard.
I Am waiting for the new Dx10 cards from Nvidia. As far as the 2gig ram instead of 1gig.
I will get another gig of ram.. its just right now I can safely afford this. Next paycheck.. I order the second stick. :) What I do for a living is tweak the living hell out of windows xp...so for now I know I can have 1gig of ram and not be hurt by it. Definitely will setup...
my new esata Seagate in my case.

As far as the cooler idea I will definititely look for it.

Thanks again guys!

When you post what you just ordered. You'll get 100 Monday morning quarterbacks telling you ways to have done it better.

1Gb vs 2Gb no big difference, obviously you know 2Gb is better... and 2 x 1Gb is slight better for overclocking than 4 x 512Mb.

7600GS is a slight step backward, where if you had gotten the 7600 you'd have been a slight step forward, but if its a temporary solution to hold you over until DX10, then it doesn't matter.

The system looks pretty good overall, but then again, anything with a Core2 in it is going to kick ass and look good! ;)

For 40 bucks I ordered from Newegg the Artic freezer Pro and the compound.
So I should recieve cooler and all my parts together at the same time.
Look forward to give you guys the temps and successful oc I get for it.

I'd say it looks like a decent setup all around. I do want to point out that you will need to buy a PCI ATA card if you plan to run your two older ATA hardrives along with your two DVD drives as the board only has one channel of IDE. Or, get a couple IDE/SATA adapters for all those open SATA channels.

What I might do is because I have like 4 idea drives lol.
Is consolidate and take 2 of the drives and make them usb. And replace the Dvd-rom and Dvd-rw ide drives with one sata dvd-rw drive. It would help with the cooling of the pc and the noise factor in one stroke..and lesson the power required internally.

My new parts come in tomorrow.. GO NEwegg.. off tomorrow from work..
And off again on Thursday. Wooot. Its like christmas in November.

You will enjoy it. This is my first Intel build ever. I have have almost every AMD chip series since the K6-2. I upgraded from a 939 3000+ and everything seems so much smoother. Right now I am at 350 fsb x 9 with no voltage increase on the proc. I have alot of room to grow.

Enjoy!

No you can't. The S2I or SATA to IDE adapters only work on CD-R DVD ROMs for some reason. I've tested NEC, LiteON, Sony and Samsung DVD-RW and 4 adapters with no luck. I have a SATA-LiteOn CD-R and it seems stuck at 40X for its max Speed. The funny thing is that the IDE one would do 48X with the Adapter LOL!

GWC AD-3000

If some of you guys found a work-around, please let me know?

I just thought about it. what I will do is make one of my drives. External. I actually have a kit for that. dump the Dvd-rom drive. Keep DVD-rw DRive and the fastest ata drive I have internal. I would only lose a dvd-rom drive. which is no loss for me. Problem solved with no money spent.

Or you can do it like I did. I use a CD-R DVD-ROM combo drive that's SATA and the DVD-RW as my only IDE device.

LiteOn SATA

I'm still wondering why they don't just make a DVD burner with SATA rather than a Combo DVD/CD-RW drive. I don't feel like paying $85 for a Plextor.

I don't know why they don't work either, must be some kind of DRM;)

so you will be unemployed when vista drops in a couple/few/several months?

just out of curiosity, why did you get the Gigabyte 965G-DS3 and not the 965P-DS3 ???

The awesome overclocking board everyone talks here about is the 965P-DS3....hope you didn't accidentally buy the wrong mobo.

The G will probably end up being a nice HTPC board in the future :D. It should OC ok, but not as high as the P.

IF I find I have severe problems.. I will deal with Newegg on returning it..and getting the other board if I need it. I won't be overclocking it today just yet. Sadly.. the Arctic Cooling fan.. has been understocked .. at newegg.. so I won't be shipped one for another few days.
I will concentrate on the important task. Installing Vista and all updates. Getting my games working and seeing how it runs. The big oc will be done once I get the Arctic cooler.
IF that damn fan had been instock. I would install it all today. Crap.

I made a mistake.. boy am I paying for it.. but maybe you guys can give me an idea to fix it. I made the mistake of not checking my current powersupply.. and it doesn't fit the new board.. I went to reassemble my old system... and loy an behold it seems my old case.. decided to take a shitstorm on me.. and die. So now I need a new case.. with the right powersupply. What is the best deal.. On a mid-tower case With the correct powersupply for a Core2duo board? I can't afford to go super high end right now. Sadly.. a company named.. pagecomputing is being very shifty and has yet to refund me of over 140 dollars from an order they theythemselves canceled over a week ago because they couldn't fulfill the order because the part I wanted was not available.

So what case can I order from newegg today that would be excellent for right now? I don't need uber. I will save money and upgrade for a better case. I just need one that will no doubt about it work with my new setup. Thanks again for the help.
Damn my luck.

Not to threadjack, but Vanilla's PM box is full...

@ Vanilla,
I saw that you had a 7900gto that you'd be interested in parting with. I would take it off your hands for $260. Please let me know if you're interested.

@ Ruben - That looks like a sweet rig - definitely OC it, and it will last you quite a while.

Price range?

Here's one of my favorites for "cheap".
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811133156

$100 for a nice looking windowed case, it has 120mm fans in front & back for great airflow & its all very quiet for the amount of airflow you get, AND it comes with a decent 430W PSU.

It only has a 20 pin connector on the PSU, so order a 20 pin to 24pin adapter.

There was a deal on an Antec Sonata II floating around. Good case with a 450W PSU in it. I had one with an old build I had (Sonata 1) and it was nice and quiet.

space now.

I like this combo except that you should of gotten the 7600 gt for about $30 more and have gotten about a 25% increase in gaming performance.

Notice todays G880 announcement.. thats what I was waiting for. Once I have the scratch saved up.. that is what is replacing this quicky cheap pci-express 7600 gs. :) 7600gt? that slow thing? ;)

What's the other non gaming performance like?

here is some interesting things I learned.. Example.. IF you have a perfectly working hard drive that has Vista installed on it. Lets say for example.. your old pc's board takes a dive.
you build a new Pc. Totally different architecture. you put that hard drive in the new system set it to master.. and boot it up.. ..what do you all think happens? Cookie to first person who can guess what happens?

Microsoft agents rapelling out of black helecopters storm your house?

Just a guess. :D

ROFlmao.. this ain't no Geek squad Video lol. MAn I Guess no one is running vista in that manner. :) Come on take a guess! So many pc experts here!

The "Queer eye for a straight guy" squad comes over to your house & has coffee & bagels with you to discuss why you care about what happens. And your other feelings of inadequacy caused by your macho father and emasculating mother.
