Is SP2 safe to install? I’ve been putting off SP2 for some time primarily due to incompatibility issues. However, I am beginning to see more support for SP2.

Here is the list of softwares that I currently use.

• APC PowerChute Personal Edition
• ASUS Utility
• Creative X-Fi (Media Source)
• 3D Mark05/06
• Hauppauge PVR250
• WinDVD 6
• Microsoft Office XP
• FireFox
• MSN 7.5
• Nero6 (latest Version)
• Norton Internet Security 2006
• QuickTime 7
• TMPGEnc DVD Author
• Ulead Video Studio 9

My PC Spec:

AMD64 3200+ (754)
ASUS K8V SE Deluxe
Corsair 1024MB 2.5CAS 400DDR RAM
Sapphire X800GTO with AGP Bridge and Zaman GPU cooler
Sony SDM-HX73 Monitor
Logitech X530 5.1 Speakers
Corsair HX520 PSU
LG DVD-ROM
NEC-DVD Burner
Sony Floppy Drive
Maxtor SATA 7200RPM HDD
Creative X-Fi Soundcard
Hauppauge WinTV PVR250

Thanks for your help.

YOu should have no problems with SP2. Also I would like to point out that in Oct MS is going to drop support for SP1 systems so that means you pretty much have to get SP2.

You should definitely be running sp2. There is no reason not to. I'm surprised you aren't chock full of worms and trojans if you've been running this long without sp2.

It broke some programs when it first came out, however, at this point, there is absolutely no reason to not have it installed.

Your safest bet would be to start with a clean copy of windows and install sp2 and all of the updates before you install any other programs.

Ya I read that, thats why I'm asking lol. My system is running stably with SP1a but I don’t want to mess it up by installing SP2 and I really don’t want to do full recovery.

lol, my primary PC is virus and spyware free since April 2004.

Yeah because people don't know that SP2 created more holes then it fixed. Thats why it needs 40-45 patches AFTER installing it! :p

That's the nature of patching an os. Even linux or osx have many updates to install.

Can you please tell us what software you listed has incompatibility issues with SP2?

I've had SP2 installed since it was released. Never had any problems, period.

you should slipstream the sp2 if you can. If you don't you end up with this sloppy bs in the windows folder. Actually I guess its not a big deal I'm just a neat freak :O

Yes but the purpose of SP2 was to fix holes NOT create new ones that NOW need to be patched that didn't need to be patched before!

Like what the crap dude, SP2 fixes alot of holes that viruses and spyware use to expoit machines.
SP2 with the latest updates are allmost required for a safe and stable machine.

I also recommend downloading the full SP2 for offline installation and create a new slipstreamed disk using Autostreamer

Just get latest drivers for everything and you should be OK, no worry, SP2 has been out for 2 years and whatever incompatibility you fear has been sorted out :D

If you need a hint as to how mainstream SP2 is now, when I saw this post I wondered who "brought this obviously old post back to the front page." Literally I thought this post was from well over a year ago.

Seriously...I wondered who had the sick and twisted sense of humor to ingite a fire by asking this question again. I thought I'd see a banner saying Just Kidding, when I clicked. Why, oh why does this still get asked? This issue was put to bed more than a year ago.

News flash, those vulnerabilities weren't all introduced by SP2. Most are present in SP1. Most are present all the way back to Windows 2000.

While I also highly recommend SP2, it's not a magical fix for spyware, trojans and viruses :)

It's not the magical fix, but without SP2, a system is much more vulnerable than a system with SP2. Anytime I have to clean up a spyware ridden machine, I can almost always bet that it's a pre-SP2 one....from people like the OP who haven't crawled out from under a rock to realize it's been okay to install not long after it was released, when a few (very few) problems were fixed. Almost all of those issues were in a corporate setting, and had no effect on home PCs.

or you could read a paragraph in the release notes of SP2 and let the SP slipstream itself......

well, yeah, there is that too

Amen, brother.

I grow sick and tired of people who ignore the icon that tells 'em to install system updates. I'm glad i have most of my users on a domain where they can't ignore these things.

WSUS and Group Policies FTW!

After I 'fix' friends PC's, I always set the updates to auto install, and they are never the wiser

Ditto, I do that for users who aren't a part of the domain I look after. Making the user safer, one pc at a time. LOL

After doing tons of research, I'm sticking with SP1. Why, because some people with K8V SE Deluxe are experiencing unusual problems after installing SP2. Since my PC already works flawlessly with SP1, I’ve chose to stick with it. I just hope the new X-Fi and ATI CCC drivers are compatible with it lol.

That can be assured as I never let anyone touch my system lol

Well after seeing your decision to not install SP2, maybe you shouldn't either.

Please for the sake of the rest of us, please install SP2.

I wanted install SP2 (I actually prepared all the drivers etc...) but after reading all the problem associated with my mobo, I better leave it alone. Not to mention, I have tones of course work to due in by end of term, so I need my PC up and running.

That's fine.
Typically, it's better safe than sorry when doing a critical update like SP2, I would say normally install away. But if you have identified a possible problem between your mobo and SP2, and you are in the middle of school and need it running to do work, best to wait until semester is over before tackling the update. It's great to be up to date, but if it borks your machine it does you no good.

Hope you get things figured out eventually.

man that sucks, SP2 makes things way better, oh well, GL with school

I have XP SP2 installed on my file server who have the Asus K8V motherboard, which is the same as yours minus the bell and whistles. I never had any issues and it's the same when it was used as my main computer so take the incompatibilities reports with a grain of salt. However, if the issue was due to the X-Fi, then it's up to you to decide.

Think your safe with SP2 (or really an OS for that matter), do an audit on it and see how "safe" you really are. Its surprising how insecure it really is. I found this out in the security class I'm currently taking.

SP2 killed a friends of a friends system so I'm NOT loading it.

Friends computer != your computer ;) What's the worse that could happen? OS seizes and you have to reinstall (granted that is a pain to do)?

Do you people read?
This thread is 2 months old.
He's identified a possible conflict with SP2 and his mobo.
He can't risk having to go through the trouble of a reinstall if SP2 won't work properly with his hardware because he is in the middle of school right now and can't take time to fix it if it doesn't work.

If he did upgrade and it borked his machine, you guys would be all over him for not checking compatibility issues. Either way, you would find a way to come in here and try to prove how superior you are.

It's a general trend in this forum and one that stinks up the whole place.
So read and think before you jump on some "I know better than you" bandwagon.
