Just switched from XP, a few questions

Greetings all,

I've just switched from a Dell laptop to a new Core 2 MBP as my primary workstation. The transition has been going pretty well except for a few questions,

1. Is there a way to have network shares automatically mount upon startup/login?

2. How do I refresh a network share? I make a change to it on another machine and there is no refresh function in the finder to see the most update version. Creating a new temporary folder seems to do the trick, but there should be an easier way.

3. In IE, you can type the name of the website you want to go to and hit control + enter to automatically fill in the http and .com, is there a similar function for safari?

4. Is there a good VNC client? I have a linux server that I remotely administrate, and I have tried Chicken of the VNC, which doesn't run as well as the Windows UltraVNC client.

5. One more, is there a way to assign the lock screen command to "Command + L", similar to XP "Windows + L"?

That's about it for now!

1) Drag the mounted network share into your login items (System Preferences->Accounts-> (user account) -> Login Items tab

2) Hmm... my network shares just seem to update on their own, though I do notice that some items don't update until i select them (ie file size will be incorrect until i hilite it)

I'll have to find out if there's a way to do it

3) I don't think so, never had the need to try

4) Unfortunately, CotVNC seems to be the only one (aside from Apple Remote Desktop). It does kind of suck.

5) I don't know of keyboard shortcuts, ut I have an expose hot corners set so when I move my mouse to the upper right, it activates the screensaver (and locks the screen)

for #3 safari seems to be a lot smarter at discovering websites, i just type google and press enter and it figures out what i mean, i haven't missed ctrl+enter from IE at all

3) fn + enter is the way to do it in safari (firefox is just like IE FYI, ctrl + enter). Also, in safari, command (apple key next to space bar) + enter adds the http and .com and puts it into a new tab

fn + enter doesn't work for me on my MBP :( I've tried both the enter on top of the shift and next to the left key.

The login items trick for mounting shares works wonderfully, but when I put my MBP to sleep, it loses all the connections :(

Is this a SMB problem?

More like a general network issue... it puts the NIC to sleep too so you lose all network connections.

I've noticed that when I'm on iChat with my macbook, and it goes to sleep, it disconnects me. Any way to make it stay connected, or do I have to turn off going to sleep?

4) CotVNC is pretty much regarded as the best Mac VNC client, but you can always try the Apple Remote Desktop client.

5) Quicksilver can do this.

So the disconnection problems happens for every mount type? Even AFP?

Also, another question,

I'm printing some stuff in Safari and I can't seem to find a place to change the print margin settings, which is in Page setup for IE. I'm using 3 hole punched paper (needs about .5") and Safari is using the maximum printable area for my printer (.25" margins), HP LaserJet 2300.

Printer Margins:
File>Page Setup>Paper Size>Manage Custom Paper Size

Make a new paper size, something like "New Letter"
well, this pic of the screen you should see will show you how you should have it set up for how you want it:

Printing isn't a Mac's strong point, unless it's from an Adobe application :(

as far as having the "Windows Key + L" Function.

I do it a slightly different way, kinda long the lines of the fast user switching, but I add shortcut keys (a total of two shortcuts. I'll go into detail on how to if your interested) (It's really the last few paragraphs of that article, but instead of using keychain access, I use the fast user switching, so the Login Window appears.)
