Website says it should be available for the PS3 in mid november, E17 is the new desktop interface. v5.0 is completely new, based on Fedora Core 5....

YDL v5.0 is slated for release mid-November with support for the Sony PS3 first, and support for the former Apple PowerPC product line to follow. Any updates required to support the Apple PowerPC systems following the release for PS3 will be made available via a free download.

Which systems will be supported?
Terra Soft will initially launch YDL v5.0 with support for the Sony PS3. By the close of 2006, support for the former Apple PowerPC product line will be made available, with intent to provide both DVD and CD install images via YDL.net Enhanced and the public mirrors, while the shipping product will be available on DVD only.

Good news indeed. Great to hear Terrasoft still supporting PowerPC also. I wonder (I didn't RTFA/link) if Sony will use this as the included Linux distro that comes with the PS3 or will it be some other distro (in-house?)? Oh well at least it is another reason to grab a PS3 for me! :cool:
 
Looks like we will get some hard numbers on cpu preformance. Hope it turns out to be a good point per dollar rate for the folders :)
 
I don't understand Sony. Allow Linux for the PS3 (homebrew developers dream come true), but do everything possible to block it on the PSP. If Sony were to just allow and to an extent support homebrew on the PSP it would skyrocket its popularity
 
You would have thought they would have learned their lesson with the last time they did this, they made a kit for the PS2 and it failed miserably. With the price of the PS3 I can't see how this would be beneficial to anyone to run linux on a game console, for the same amount of money you could build a decent system and run any distro you want.

Just my 2 cents, perhaps I am not seeing the whole picture......
 
I tried for the longest time to get ahold of a copy of that PS2 Linux kit to no avail.

so will you be able to hook up a keyboard and mouse to the PS3? if not, how useful will an operating system be? this thing should be a pretty awesome performer, so i'll be watching this.

Yeah, I seem to recall the folks at IGN talking about the PS3's browser, and they mentioned that a USB keyboard is a must if you intend on serious web browsing, because the on-screen just won't cut it.
 
IBM did add patches to the linux kernel, to add cell cpu support, however full use we cant be sure. Maybe if its compiled with IBMs Octipiler, then maybe it will be better optimized.
 
sure would make things interesting... if one would actually be able to use the ps3 as a fully functional home pc.

It seems to have 6 SPEs (same number available to game developers) at it's disposal, but I dont think its programed for the cell specifically just yet.

At boot, YDL shows 2 PPUs (one real, one a hyperthread) and 6 SPEs ... but to
take advantage of them is another story.

Not really a bad thing though, if people start programing homebrew hardware specific code for the cell (as sony seems to suggest is possible), we could see some applications really taking use of the processor, and maybe RSX as well.

Anyways, please try to fill out that form, I'm all for flash support. :)

I'm pretty excited about this personally. It really seems to be a fully functinal linux distro.
2,248 applications in all. I can see this being a sleeper killer app for people looking for a good HTPC and those who love linux.
 
The yellow dog linux is the only big reason right now I would consider a ps3. Thinking it would make a real nice emulator box in a media center. Figure it would be good at video playback as well. Can't wait to see how well it runs this.

Yeah, I'll wait and see how well it works out before I decide to buy one.

Looks like all systems are go, though :)
 
i have to admit, im really interested if there will be apps/etc that will make proper use of that processor...

I wanna hold off reservations until I see it in action. Dont forget guy and gals that really that any ppc distro could go on the ps3, to my knowledge. Also I wonder how well yellowdog will be able take advantage of the cell cpu. Also I think if, blue ray movie support isnt on this distro it will only be run by linux geeks, most people would just stick with the sonys linux incarnation.
