NFS carbon demo is out

Runs fine on my rig. 30+ fps 16/12 4AA, but definitely more fun at 1280/1024 4AA, with frames around 45-50ish. Also takes less of a performance hit with 4AA on versus 2AA, probably something to do with ATI's 4AA tweakage on X1Ks.

Just got a chance to play. Probably the worst NFS game yet (as far as progress goes). Talk about a big step back. The controls suck, the game feels very consolish, doens't look all that good (WTF is with the blue tint?), and well, just wasn't fun. The ONLY thing I thought was cool was the customization... hardly a saving grace.

I hope this isn't a sign of whats to come for the NFS Series. Up until now, I have always really loved it. I played the hell out of MW, UG1/2, and HP2, as well as the older games. I really wish the series would make a return back to the old ways. I would LOVE to see an HP3 or a a High Stakes 2.

Anybody know how to fix this error when I try to install this game?

The motion blur in this game sucks. NFSMW had MUCH better motion blur. I recommend turning this off, otherwise it is very annoying.

I like the demo but a tad peeved that this day in age a game can be released lacking wide screen support. Oh and yeah, the motion blur is a tad over done.

Circuit is ok but the drift mode in the game just sucks... And please native widescreen support.

Delete the "DirectX" folder out of the directory that the game unpacks into.

Worked for me at least.

I just played the game... and I vomited in my own mouth.
The drift... it makes me wanna shot myself in the skull with a nailgan... repeatedly.

Didnt like either motion blurs, but I can't wait for the full game, the cop mode looks like it'll be fun.

In the Canyon race, did you notice the other car seems to be weighted like a tank so that you cant knock it off the cliff?

I downloaded it yesterday and although I still prefer Most Wanted, I wasn't disapointed with Carbon. Overall I liked it. The drifting is ok, you just need the time to get used to it. The autosculpt feature is probably the nicest improvement, though in the demo, we can't do much. One of the things I noticed is the fact that the cars don't look as good as the cars in Most Wanted. Hopefully we'll have more options to tweak in the full game, that will improve the cars looks.
My only real problem with Carbon, is the fact that it seems that the game's races will all take place at night...I would rather have some at night and some during day time. I'll just have to wait and see what's in the full game.

I really enjoyed Need for Speed Most Wanted, and I was looking forward to this latest installment.

Well, I have played the demo, and I couldn't care less that this pile of crap is coming out. It's aweful, the demo is horribly unpolished. To make matters worse, the graphics aren't as good as those in Most Wanted. I couldn't believe it. There is also no widescreen support (at least in the demo) and the textures weren't good either. The car models are good, but the lighting on them is horrid. Plus they've added the drift stuff back in that NFSU 1 & 2 had, which I do not care for. The physics absolutely suck. They are much worse than those in previous NFS installments.

I realize this is only a demo, and the full game could be quite a bit better, but I generally find graphically, and from a gameplay perspective, the demos are usually 85%-95% representative of the final product. The last three games were better than this, and I don't even like NFSU 1 & 2. I hated the fact you were forced to "rice your ride" to advance.

Well....
Maxed everything and had a go.
Motion Blur is WAY over emphasized and looks lame. Physics have gone back to the Hot Pursuit Era except on Drag where they resemble Underground but easier to control.
The car models are ok but don't feel like they might be real.
All in all this feels easier and less enticing then most wanted, Camera positioms are also more limited.
As for performance its SubPar by my standards:
1280*1024 everything maxed I get from 17-25 FPS, maybe if I disable motion blur there'll be more performance there. Oddly it feels smooth at those low FPS rates, which is a first for me...
I'm gonna try it out some more but so far I like Most Wanted and the first UnderGround better.

The last demos seem to follow this trend of being sucky sequals BF2142 is another example.
At this point Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is all I have to look forward to.

I liked NFS:MW a lot. I just finished playing the NFS:C demo, my thoughts:

The city race was pretty good, though much too short. I don't mind the blur effect. The "crew" banter is annoying to the point of detracting from the race experience. Something stupid is said every 15 seconds or less - "You owned 'em!"

The drift race is awful. These races should be removed from the game, entirely.

The canyon race was merely "okay". I don't like the "rules". I feel that it should be a normal race to the bottom, rather than "follow the leader". If you pass the opponent car for more than 10 seconds, the race ends. The exotic car sucked, I couldn't pass the opponent. The muscle car was much better, I could pass the opponent. The tuner car was exceptional, I easily passed the other car and ended the canyon race within a minute. You should definately be able to force the other car off the canyon. I hate the look of your rival. I hate his flat nose. I hate his stupid eyes. He's one of those people you can just look at and think, "he's probably very stupid", and you'd likely be right.

If the game turns out to have a favorable ratio, like 70% city races, 20% canyon races, 10% suffering through drift tracks, I'll consider buying it second-hand. Anything to keep money out of EA's wallet ;)

have there been any other NFS series that had the controls and physics of NFS: Porsche Unleashed? Cause I couldn't get used to the controls on this one.. it might be my x360 controller though.

I'm using a 360 controller on Windows XP (with the XBCD drivers to change the idiotic deadzone).

The handling is not bad, just different than NFS:MW. You have to let off the gas and tap the brake more often. When it looks like you are not going to be able to make the turn, use the handbrake.

this should of been called a beta, most demos i've played don't give me DirectX 0 error, but renamed the folder and got passed that, then to always randomly have the game crash back to the desktop regardless of resolution.

When it plays it seems to play ok at 16x12 on my 22" monitor.

Controls suck ass and the nagging in the first race is stupid, otherwise it could be a good game.

why won't they make a game based on the Porsche Unleashed engine?
Because they're marketing their racing games to ricers now, and ricers don't want anything to do with real racing. Fake wings, fake exhausts, fake turbos, the only thing real on their cars is the massive sticker collection. Someone like that doesn't want real racing action. If YOU want real racing, FIA GTR is incredible - the first game I've played with a better physics engine (by FAR) than Porsche Unleashed.

All that said, I'd just be happy if EA would rerelease Porsche for the NT platform.

Great game, love the autosculpt feature something way different from Most Wanted. undergrounds.

Defiantly getting.

ppl that dont like it are just cry baby's :D.

No wide screen support? No thanks.

Sadly, few games give widescreen support the attention it deserves, but it is getting better.

Downhill racing is sweet, I must say... But of the rules I don't like, leader shouldn't be k.o. by someone passing you for 10 seconds. And chaser should win, if they cross the line first and not having to hold the lead for 10 seconds.

You took the word right out of my mouth. Touched upon pretty much every problem I had with this demo.

I think I'll just reinstall Most Wanted and start up a new profile instead of getting this pile of shit.

If it says "EA" on the box, expect mediocre. EA is still pumping NFS games out because all they have to do to sell them is include a lot of bad music from popular artists and cutscenes featuring a scantily clad model reading bad lines. I personally think Need for Speed 2 was the best of the series. Hot Pursuit was pretty good, but everything since then has been crap in one way or another.

I played it and I actually think its very fun. For those bitching about physics, the physics in NFS were never realistic and were never meant to be realistic. Live with it.

But WTF NO WIDESCREEN SUPPORT

EA PLEASE FUCKING REALIZE THAT SOME OF US USE WIDESCREEN MONITORS. 1920x1200 PLEASE THX.

Naw, Porsche, with the exception of its annoying crash-if-you-have-lens-flare-turned-on bug, was IMO the best. The physics were the closest to a real car in that one. And since I don't like lens flare in games (*I* am the player. I am not a camera. Therefore I should not see lens flare) even that wasn't overly annoying.

I think drifting is pretty fun.

Coming from simracing games(where its impossible to drift) the drift stuff is fun.

Rest of the game feels horrible though.

EA are well aware we have widescreen monitors, but as previously stated they will not be supporting widescreen resolutions because they believe it gives other users a disadvantage.

Yeah, pretty soon they will lock the framerate at 15fps so the Intel onboard graphics crowd has a fair chance. They are debating whether or not to force all details to low.

All low frequency sound effects and rear channels will be disabled too because not everyone has rear speakers and a subwoofer.

Any mouse above 800dpi will be disabled, if it is a comfortable mouse the game will make it shoot spikes out the front.

You gotta love their logic...

Has anyone else noticed that SLI doesn't have any effect in this game? Needs a profile. The one from Most Wanted doesn't work.

Like some one else said.. Installed it. Beat it. DELETED it... I played it on the X360 and let me tell you it plays much better (even thought @ 720p it does lag in the drifting) than on my PC.. And I have a 'TOP OF THE LINE' setup.. The turning SUCKS. The GRAPHICS are OK but not as good as MW. I was really hoping for a NFSU-2 styled but modernized game out of this installment of the series but I am dissapointed... XBL here I come will be buying it ANYWAY for the xbox 360 cause it's probbly got fun multiplayer but it's not what I expected. NOT AS HYPED UP AS IT WAS SAID TO BE!

Not to hijack the thread, but I have to point out that the whole business of widescreen giving players an unfair advantage is utter bullshit. No concessions have EVER been made regarding differences between 4:3 and 5:4 resolutions, high versus low resolutions, graphics detail settings, monitor size, stereo versus 3D/surround sound, or anything else.

Any developer's claim that widescreen isn't supported because the extra little bit of width in the player's field of view is unfair to non-widescreen users is nothing more than a thinly veiled excuse for lazy development. EA is probably using rendering code that is years out of date and doesn't want to bother re-writing it to support aspect ratios and resolutions other than the hard-coded modes they've been using.

Max Payne is over 5 years old now, and it supports literally every resolution, aspect ratio, and refresh rate that your video card and monitor are capable of displaying. I ran it at 2304x1440 on my Sony FW900, for Christ's sake. That's all I need to say on the issue.

What I dont understand is how the hell the graphics can be like worse than NFS: MW and the game can run so FUCKING terrible.

With 2x 7800gtx's NFS MW ran perfect at 1600x1200 all settings maxed.

This game is UNPLAYABLE at those settings and looks worse, I really dont understand.
