Best OS depends upon so many things:
your hardware, what you do with it, what you like to run, what you're comfortable with, what everybody around you runs, how much isht you're willing to put up with, and then some.

I'm voting for OS X and I just built my new Core 2 Duo system for Windows XP/Vista and I must say I still rather use my Mac.

Vote which is currently your favorite OS?

I figured that you were asking this question. I am not qualified to answer the "best" OS question and I cannot say what will be my favorite OS ever, since I do not know what may be coming up in the future.

That's basically what I asked in the other thread. That question is about as ambiguous as it gets. How about some criteria.

Well, I've really only had real experience with differnt flavors of windows, so my answer is easily winxp. I like Vista, but I haven't been able to use it day to day like I have used XP for the last few years. That will probably change though. As far as the linux versions go, I don't have any real preference. they all feel about the same to me and seem to work just fine. I go right back to XP though.

Mac OS, followed second closely by any Linux, followed very lastly by any Windows.

WHY didn't you put Windows 2000 ????

Worthless poll !!!!!

Same here. But obviously not for games. I don't even surf the net on my core2 Duo

2000/XP, Soon to probably prefer Vista. Never cared much for Linux.

Never used a Mac in my life.

Windows XP at the moment. It may change to Vista upon release... maybe. I use my computer for gaming, so Windows is obviously the best OS. XP is rock solid and for the most part the only time it crashes is if you make it crash (i.e. overclocking, running a lot of stupid crap, etc).

I have spent very little time using Mac OS (compared to Windows) and I really don't see what the big deal is, at all. People proclaim that Mac OS is the greatest OS ever and are switching to Macs, yet I have not found one compelling reason to do so. I have a nuetral point of view on Mac OS.

I really don't like Linux as I seem to waste more time trying to figure out how to make things work than actually having it work. Linux was cool in high school when I could spend 12 hours getting something to work. Once I got into college it became a POS.

For home computing, I say XP, but maybe vista if it lives up to all the hype. XP is stable, I never had the infamous blue scrren of death in the past couple of years. It also supports the most software, so I really don't have to worry if it will support a certain application. Security is an issue, but that could just be from its large market share. Really though, if you know what you are doing, it shouldn't be a problem.

I tried linux, bit it takes way too long figuring everything out, and really doesn't do anything special that XP couldn't. You still have to have a windows partition for games and certain applications. I found its easier just to use windows, instead of switching back and forth between windows and linux. Linux and other OS's are good for specialized applications, but I would say XP is the best for general home computing.

Windows XP. Hopefully Vista continues the trend that Microsoft has going with 2k and XP and turns out to be a excellent peice of software.

to all the ppl bringing it up: 2000/XP are pretty much the same thing

And yes, i DO hope that Vista will turn out to be even better than XP was (excellent)

Although XP is my main OS, the one that I think is best is openSUSE. Linux that comes with most things like Java and Flash.

I chose WinXP due to the ease of use, hardware recognition, and just plain stable OS.

General use - WindowsXP
Looks - Mac OSX
Looks/For kicks - Ubuntu Linux..

I use Windows XP mostly for gaming but my favorite OS by far is Ubuntu.

GNU/Hurd FTW

I bet if god used an operating system thats what it would be GNU/HURD 1.0, if ever its made.

btw I use ubuntu for everything, so I said ubuntu, but do boot expee, for games and photoshop.

Linux because I can do anything I want with it (except, see below).

Windows because I can feed my gaming addiction a few hours a week.

Voting for XP, for all its faults. Haven't had enough time with Vista to comment on it.

I like Linux, but I just don't think it's "there" yet to be my favorite OS. There's too much hoop-jumping required to make things work that should be simple (like a wireless card that it took me a week to get working in Ubuntu, but worked in 10 minutes on both Win98SE and XP). When Linux can actually put things like dependency hell behind it, I'll seriously consider it for my primary OS.

OSX is a great OS, but it's limited to overpriced shiny hardware. Any developer who tries to force me to buy their hardware so I can run their software doesn't get my business.

Just a little side note here; It's my impression that the reason that OS X in general shines so brightly is because they have the control of the hardware available for their platform, it allows them to make more optimized software with cooler features than say, WinXP and all it's previous versions. Not to mention Apple invented many core components of the GUI which have been used to build many of the OS' mentioned in this poll. Without any of the companies or OS' in this poll, neither of these OS' would be possible.

I really liked the Other OS. Silky smooth, stable, and reliable.

XP currently, Vista might become my favorite after some of its issues are ironed out.

I've used Mac OS X extensively, and I can honestly say I do not like it that much. It's ok, but I'd rather use Windows. Linux is fine, but not my cup of tea really.

Windows XP x64. Faster than normal XP, whether you guys think so or not.

I voted other Linux. without a doubt, Fedora Core 5 is the best and easiest to use Operating System I have ever used. It'll always hold a special place in my computers, next to my 7 year old jpegs of my sister dressed like a pirate (don't ask)

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is indeed faster than normal Windows, at least on Athlon 64 based machines and their variants. On my Core 2 Duo, they perform exactly the same. This is probably because Intel CPU's with EM64T execute the code just as well either way, and Athlon 64's execute 64bit code faster than they do 32bit code.

Mac OS is real good and stable but I really hate the 130 bucks a year upgrade they like to run. Really XP/2000 have been very good systems in my mind. The are stable and seem to run multiple apps well. I like linux but I really don't like the organization or lack of it I should say. I prefer freebsd over linux because of this.

anything BUT ubuntu linux. Most overhyped crap ever.

BSD, FTW.
