I know Dell LCDs prices are tough to beat. I can't say I've ever been a fan of Dell, so trying to come to grips with putting something named Dell on my desk is a stigma I have to overcome, but the price has made me think.

Now between the NEC and Dell they are both 8bit and S-IPS. So the only thing that seems to stand in the way is the price difference and one being wide and one not.

Which would you prefer and why?

The NEC UK site lists the panel as S-IPS, but there is no mention of this on the USA site, so I'd hope the USA version is the same, if anyone knows.

NEC. First of all with Dell no guarantee you'll even get an IPS. Could be a PVA. NEC has way better warranty 3 years or 4 years I forget parts and labor. Dell has one year. NEC has better electronics and gets grade A panels form LGP dell gets grade b. Thats why NEC cost more.

Is that the true Dell has a 1 year warranty and uses a lower grade panel?

ALOHA

i would personally go with the NEC I mean not that Dell makes a bad monitor but NEC is much better

Dell has 3 year warranty AFAIK.

Get the HP 2065. Newer version S-IPS (05 version, the NEC is 04 version). And yes with Dell you are in the Panel lottery. I bought a 2007fp and recieved a PVA panel.

Hmm can't say I'm a HP fan either. Have you used the NEC and HP?

THANKS

I used to have a 19" XX1970 model NEC about a year ago. I traded in for a bigger monitor, but I must say NEC is very good contrast ratio.... Darks looked very clean an un washed. IMO I would stick with NEC. When NEC comes out with there 26' im going to upgrade again

One other problem this is a DVD-D plug on it, and I'm using Evga 7900 KO Superclock cards with DVD-I so how do you do this, you have to buy a DVD-D to DVD-I plug?

It will work just fine...trust me.

edit- I guess you could say I also have an anti-Dell bias but I recieved my very first Dell product this past week (2007FPW) and I really can't find fault with it other than I can't stand the anti-glare coating....but that goes for other monitors as well. I can't imagine a better value than the Dell right now if you consider the features (that actually work) it provides.
1. Stylish, tasteful bezel and stand
2. Stand has tilt, swivel and pivot which all work smoothly
3. S-IPS panel with banding problem gone from desktop mode (and not really noticeable when using other modes)
4. Composite, S-video inputs as well as 4 usb ports
5. Scaling including 1:1, 4:3 and "fill"
6. 3 year warranty parts/labor and return for refund within 21 days

All of that really makes it hard to beat for the current sale/coupon price even if you don't like the idea of having a Dell product...kinda silly if you think about it. ;)

Well this is just a get me by LCD for gaming until I can find something better, which I'll have my eyes on the HP 30" and Samsung 30" when they come out.

I was told the NEC has better electronics and a grade A panel and the Dell has a grade B.

I was also told the LG 2000C was a nice panel, but people seem to be reporting banding issues with it, hmm.

The "grade A, grade B" nonsense is pure speculation and I would accept that with a grain of salt. I do admire NEC's engineering department but after having the Dell for a few days I can tell that the design of this monitor and the almost overwhelming amount of options and settings in the OSD (I forgot to mention PIP above) doesn't exactly scream "budget monitor". Remember back when the 2007FPW first came out it sold for over $500 and the A02-A03 revisions that are being sold now are actually better than those. If you're leaning towards the NEC then just get that...if you want a great monitor (yeah, I admit it  ) for a fantastic price then get the Dell.

If you want I will email guy at NEC for you and ask him for sure but I'm thinking it uses the 05 too. I think the 05 is brighter mainly and a maybe a little faster ( they also switched to talking about grey to grey reponse instead of on/off to keep up with the other marketing liars) but i think it's same speed.

I wonder if possibly the NEC does have a 05 revision, hmmm

I prefer the 4:3 aspect ratio of the 2070NX over the 16:10 2007WFP, not because I have anything against widescreen, but because I prefer to have the 1200 vertical res of the 2070NX since having those extra 150 pixels vertically is often more advantageous for my work (programming) than the 2007WFP's extra 80 horizontal pixels. If you won't be programming on your monitor, then this will probably be much less of a consideration for you. My main hesitation with the 2007WFP is that the panel lottery has begun on it, and you might not get an S-IPS. Otherwise, it seems like a great LCD, especially for the price.

I have a 2070NX here right next to a Dell 2001FP, and they both look great to me. I've color calibrated them and they both match the colors of printed photos quite well. Then again you said this would be a temporary gaming monitor, so that's also not a consideration for you. The more I talk through it, the more I think you wouldn't really mind that much even if you got a PVA 2007WFP. Don't let us color-accuracy snobs dictate what you should get for your needs.

MentatYP I was told that possibly the NEC isn't using a LM201U04 and is now using the 05.

Would you happen to know anything that if I purchase the NEC if it is using now the 05?

No idea, sorry. I can tell you that I got mine about 4 months ago, so if the 05 rumor is true I probably have one in mine, and I don't see any problems with it. The 05 is still an S-IPS anyway, right? Are there known problems with it or something?
