Vista RC 2 On Friday

yeah u can use a trial version of alchol 120% to run the iso file and mount it the virtual drive then install on the hdd from there, what i always do as for i do not have the dvds to waiste burning iso files

Is it me, or does Vista hate SATA hard drives? When I don't have the Vista DVD in the tray, it always shows me "Cannot find BOOTMGNR Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart." or something like that.

I just got a brand new smoking SATA 3.0 250GB hard drive from Newegg today so that's why I'm just kind of pissed off right now.

OC LEgend, how do you install when Alcohol (i use Daemon) is in Windows?! Can you elaborate on what procedure you follow, Im not sure how to install using alcohol (or daemon)

It seems that my direct download copy from Microsoft of build 5744 was corrupted. I've tried to install it 3 times now both through upgrade & full format does not work. I guess I got to download it again. ARGH. What a waste of a DVD.
What happens?

I thought my RC1 disk was corrupt, but it was something else.

I was running a system with 5 sata drives and Beta 2 and they all worked fine.

Microsoft is realy moving along with each vista build, I saw a big difference between 5600 and 5728 where Itunes work perfectley, my X-Fi drivers install without a BSOD and speed is definetly improved. Lotus Notes 6.5.3 still having major issues at work though.

welp ..that was a pretty painless upgrade to 5744 from 5728 .. this latest build does seem a smidge snappier now ..

now to try Daemon Tools and see if it still works .. :)

**update**
nope ..Daemon Tools got borked ..not listed in control panel anymore and cant use its uninstaller so have to manually delete it and then hunt thru registry and find all instances of daemon tools and delete them .. now I'll redownload the DT and try and reinstall

needed to delete the sptd entry in registry too .. DT forums suggest uninstalling DT before updating and then reinstalling after update

..darn ..cant get it reinstalled so far

For those who don't have DVD burners and don't want to hassle with virtual drives can still install Vista RC2. Just open the .iso file in a program that can read UDF formats. (I used UltraISO;s free trial). Extract the "Sources" folder to wherever you want it (I put it in C:\) When it's done extracting open the new "Sources" folder (wherever it is that you put it) and run "setup.exe"

will this work in XP too?

Burning the RC2 ISO now. I built a test system out of old parts I had around just to try out Vista on actual hardware (you can't test Aero from inside VMware >_>).

Specs of test system:
Athlon XP 2800+ @ 2.4GHz
640mb of RAM
GeForce FX 5600
MSI K8T4V Motherboard (onboard Sound, Ethernet, USB, and FireWire)
80GB Hard Disk
16x DVD-Rom

Thankfully, the hardware is generic enough that third party drivers should be down to a minimum. I tried installing Windows XP to make sure all of the old hardware was still working, and the only hardware that needed a driver was the onboard sound card (Yes, Windows XP even came with the video card drivers).

low level software will not work in Vista, remember Vista is a completly different OS.

for example

Anti-Virus (NOD, Symantec etc...)
Disc Tools (Partition Magic, Acronis, O&O etc...)
CD/DVD Burning (Nero, Roxio etc...)
Virtual Machines (Vmware etc..)

people will have to wait until AFTER Vista is released before any updates/new versions of these software are made. Anyone who atempts to run anything like this will most likely screw up thier Vista install.

The instructions would be altered, but in theory it works the same. However, XP is only on a CD, so there shouldn't be much of a reason to do it this way. Maybe on a really old laptop that doesn't have an optical drive.

what i do is open the program, top left corner go to file then open find the iso file then open it so it apears in the white window, In the 1st just double click the file to mount and run then just go about installing vista like normal

I feel like a N00b asking this, but when i mount and do all that, it says "* is not a valid Win32 application"

Im trying to install the 64 bit version. IS is possible to install it from within regular Windows, or will all this not work?!?

You cannot install 64bit XP or Vista from within a 32bit version. The setup routine is in 64bit format so it can't be understood by 32bit OS's

Thanks Ryan, your help is appreciated. Im guessing Ill have to "try" the 32 bit edition on my new C2D !

it`ll only work for the 32 bit versions, 32 bit is all i use on my P4 setup

edit: ok this kinda pissing me off it wont let me install on my sata drive

Very misleading info right there. WinXp versions of "low level" software may not work. I can't understand why people would expect them to. Anyway please note the following:

AntiVirus:
Symantec had a beta AntiVirus program available for Vista since Beta 2 if you had a corporate account.
CA has a 1 year trial for their Vista Antivirus product. There are a couple of others that are Vista compatible. I think Avast is one of them.

CD Burning:
ImgBurn is Vista compatible and works great for burning CD/DVDs along with being a hell of a lot less bloated than Nero or Roxio

Virtual Machines:
Microsoft Virtual Server Enterprise is free and will install on Vista with a couple of tweaks. There are MSDN developer blogs with intructions on how to get it to work.

Disc Defragmentation:
Raxo has a 150 day trial of Perfect Disk 8 that is made for Vista and so far has worked flawlessly.

Virtual CD/DVD drive:
Daemon Tools 4.06 installs and runs without any hacks on build 5744.

I'm enjoying 5744 so far. They finally fixed the sound control panel UI. No more black bars and out of place notches! The Creative Console didn't crash on me and SPDIF on my Audigy 4 works perfectly. I haven't encountered any weird crashes or application hangs so far and Easy Transfer worked perfectly.

how large is the file you downloaded. last night when i finished downloading, the .iso image was only 400 something mb. i knew off the bat this was wrong since my vista 5600 build dvd was around 2.6 gigs. when i was downloading rc2 firefox said the file would be around 2.5 gigs, now that its finished downloading, the .iso image is only 2 gigs.

whats the deal? both downloads were finished as completed, but both of them dont seem to be "completele"

A Clean Install to Full Operating Desktop took 19 minutes on My computer. Pretty freaking fast.

So close.

Also, I there were some forum post on VMware's site about how you can Reg Hack Vista and forceably turn on Aero. It makes the VM of it run like s* but..its there...

Edit:
I am a little bitter, 5744 gave my comp a score of a 4. 5728 rated my comp a 4.5. Grrr.

all of the previous versions of vista for me have been 2.49GB

You're probably hitting some kind of interruption while downloading. Try to use the Akamai download manger that MS provides to download Vista. As far as FF2RC2, can't help ya there.

Ain't it wonderful? They made a big change in the way the OS is applied to the system. All of that component setup crap that Windows XP setup had to go through has been done prior to creating the installation image. It's pretty much like applying a Ghost image to your computer and then having windows set up your hardware afterwards. It took me about 19-22 minutes to install Vista 5744. I can't remember exactly.

has anybody actully got this to install to a sata drive and it working without the disk error message?

250GB Western Digital Caviar RE WD2500SD SATA drive here, zero issues. Using a ULi 1573 SATA RAID controller. (not in RAID mode though)

mines a 120GB Maxtor sata drive not in raid either and i cant get vista to install for sh1t

thanks. tried the download manager with FF but kept on encountering some problems. seems to be working when i run it with IE.

One thing I frgot to tell you is to clear your browser cache.

Three computers, and all are using SATA drivers. All are various Intel chipsets. Are you trying to manually load the drivers, to see if that works?

how is gaming performance?

I only tested WoW and it seems to be on par with XP. No slower, no better. Same FPS, same everything. I could go ahead and install FEAR/Q4/D3/HL2 and test those...but alas my time is limited.

Performance in general:
Adobe CS2 kicks me out of AERO now. Didn't do that in 5728 on my work computer. Also, after closing CS2 and having windows load back up Aero, nothing on my second monitor would render correctly. Any window I dragged over to that side would corrupt and flicker like mad at me.

Seems like a nvidia driver issue, and..yes a BETA issue. O'well

I installed Vista onto the 250GB Seagate SATA in my Sig. Worked fine no problem.s

rc1 worked fine for my maxtor 250 gb sata. have yet to try out rc2.

I finished Condemned on build 5728 and it played very smooth on my rig at 1440x10something everything MAX. At 1900x1200 it was still smooth but you could feel a tad bit of lag in some areas but it wasn't like in XP where low frame rate resulted in chugging. Even in XP and 2003 games would get monster frame rates and still hitch while playing. Having dual core helps a bit too I guess. The OS was doing something in the backgroung which had the drives going crazy for a bit and it wasn't related to level loading or anything and the game kept playing smooth. F.E.A.R. played nicely as well as Tomb Raider legend, Flatout2 and Source engine based games. This is all with the ATI drivers built into Vista. The ATI Catalyst drivers are shit and bring back the good ol hitching AND corrupted textures and overall crappy performance. I wonder how it is that MS can get the drivers right and ATI can't. In any event I have no complaints in regards to gaming except for the lack of Open GL but there is enough DirectX content out there to keep me from thinking about it too much if at all.

That bug has been there for me since RC1. Exit HL2 or even one of their D3D screensavers, and the right monitor's all corrupted.

Easy fix though. Just disable and then enable the second monitor in display properties. That, or use the driver that comes with Vista, in which case no problems at all :)
