Ive seen this problem more then once, ive never bothered to fix it on my laptop
The dvd-cdrw drive will play cd's, burn cd's, but will not play dvd's. What is the usual culprit here. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drive via device manager, i have all the recent drivers for the laptop, i just dont see the optical drive only losing the ability to read DVD's. I know this must be a comon problem, although my searches through the forum lead me nowhere.
thanks

Did you do anything to the computer between now and the last time you played a DVD on it (ie. uninstalled applications, added hardware, etc...). Or have you ever played a DVD on it?

i have previously played a dvd's on it, but i have uninstalled everything unesential from except power dvd, nero, and norton

What are the symptoms? You haven't said anything specific.

Are you trying to play burned DVDs or store bought DVDs? Is there anything unusual in device manager? What happens when you insert a DVD?

these are store bought dvd's, when i insert a dvd it does not read it at all, you may click into the drive as if there was a blank disc inside, when inserted the drive reads "CD-RW" and omits DVD
there is no other problem with the laptop, it is 1 yr old

The only way I see to rule out a bad drive is to either swap out the drive or do a fresh install of windows.

I would say bad or defective drive. It happens, particualarly with some models of drives more than others.

I seem to recall that early on, DVD drives used a single laser, but that proved problematic because the laser needed to get enough illumination for the larger pits on CDs was too much for the much smaller pits on DVDs. So they solved the problem by putting in a laser to read DVDs and one to read CDs. There is a good chance the laser for reading DVDs has failed.
