I game a bit, but nowhere near hardcore (i.e. the odd match of BF2 or CS:S here and there, or occasionally a weekend marathon of AOE3 or COD2)

While those games might look graphically demanding, I'm less concerned with having the absolute highest framerates and more concerned with it being playable, at a medium-to-high detail level.

In my old rig, an AGP X800Pro did just fine with CSS and COD2 at 1280x1024, all detail maxed, or close to it (i never took a measurement, but it never stuttered, so that was my guide)...

Now, with a nice 21" widescreen, and a conroe rig to build, i'll need a PCIe videocard that will provide similar performance experience to my old rig, at least until the first crop of decent DX10 cards come out, when I'll drop 400 to get a killer card

I'm hoping to spend less than 200...and also hoping for HDCP support, other than that, the field is open...

I've had a lot of ATi recently, and I haven't had an nVidia card since an original GeForce 3, but I'm open to change...

Any ideas?

for 200 you could get a 7600gt but it might not run games top notch at that resolution.

For the price I wish I would have gotten that 7900GS instead of my 7900GT KO. I don't game a ton, I just wanted something above a 7600GT that was single slot and could run a 1680x1050 monitor fairly well. Unfortunately 7900GT was all that was around.

Dude, I just got my 7900GS and my god. It kicks ass. FEAR at max does not drop below 40 FPS EVER and idles around 80FPS.

Its rediculous. I'm so happy with this purchase especially for the price.

I'm considering this x1900gt, $181 shipped after a $75 rebate.

It's cheaper, faster in nearly all benchmarks, and supposedly has better image quality than the 7900gs (and 7900gt). It also handles AA and anisotropic filtering better than the nvidia line.

Here's a couple reviews.

Plus a great benchmark roundup of the latest cards, in french, but all that really matters are the graphs.

If you wanted to go $240 or $260 the x1900xt 256 or 7900gto are competitive, but barely worth it price performance-wise (IMO). Only qualm is that with the x1900gt, some newer games might reach the edge of playability at 1680x1050 with all the settings turned up. Two above cards should give 25% framerate boost, as a rough average, sometimes more.

What do you mean the 7900GTO and X1900XT 256 are barely worth it?? Haha.

For $240, the X1900XT 256mb performs almost identical to the 512mb version! And beats out the 7950GT easy, according to Hardocp.

And for $260, for the 7900GTO, you're basically getting a downclocked 7900GTX! Bump up the memory some and you're close or at 7900GTX speeds!

JMO lol.

IMO buy a x1900xt 256mb for ~$250 or less. I think you will be happier when using it with a 21inch monitor. But if you want to spend less than $200 get the x1900gt or 7900gs.

My 6800gt handles CS:S at 1920x1440 and 8xAF with max settings, I play at 1600x1200 4xAA and 8xAF though

I meant barely worth it in terms of the $60 and $80 upgrade relative to the $180 x1900gt. Those are definitely the two cards to get in that price range though, especially considering the (assumed) overclockability of the 7900gto.

OK I see how it is if he's tight on cash.

Thanks for all the input, I'm gonna go either with the x1900gt or the 7900gs...

However, as I look at the egg's selection of these cards, I'm not finding anything with HDCP support, which I'd like to have...

Also, what manufacturers explicitly allow you to remove the heatsink and use a third party one and remain under warranty? I know eVGA does, but do other companies like XFX?

get a good brand of 7900gs
overclocking satisfaction guaranteed

7600GT wont cut it at that res unless you turn AA off.. and that sux.

Get the eVGA 7900GS. You can remove the HSF wihtout voiding the warranty, and they have the HDCP model and the KO model. I'll find it for ya.

i get 40 (20s in battle) when i turn 2x AA on
What resolution do you run? a 7600gt is faster then my 6800gt, my 6800gt averages 92fps in the stress test at 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF all settings maxed, unless you are talking about HDR enabled levels(I leave HDR off)

At 1600x1200 4xAA and 8xAF alot of the time when I'm not looking at a vast open area im averaging 120fps++++

With my video card source is bottlenecked by my CPU until I turn my resolution up to 1920x1440 and 2xAA 8xAF, in which I average 60fps in the stress test.

im running 1680x1050.. i get 90s in the stress test too but real time gaming is another story. 4x AF works just fine but as soon as AA comes on the low flx makes it close to unplayable. 2x AA 4x AF w/ HDR = bad fps

EDIT: keep in mind im talking about servers with 20+ people. its fine when its like 5v5
