41 Days left in EVGA 7900GT stepup... anything worthwhile to upgrade to?

I needed a vid card and couldn't wait for another rebate to come out so I bought a 7900GT KO for $269.99 at Newegg. I have 41 days left on my stepup, and I'll probably wait another month, but I was wondering if anything worthwhile will be available. I was going to "upgrade" to a 7950GT for the HDCP since my 2007WFP is compatible, but I don't know if the extra 256megs of ram and HDCP are worth the $100 i'd have to pay.

Does EVGA ever drop the prices of the cards on their site? I'm guessing right now they are out of stock and high priced to prevent stepups since it probably costs them money. I doubt G80 will be out within 41 days so I'm probably going to be stuck... oh well.

Im in a similar boat, I bought a 7300gt to tide me over hoping G80 would be out by october, but I still have about 60 days left, so keeping my fingers crossed.

I have 15 days left on my stepup. I will stepup as late as possible to a 7950GX2 (from a 7900GTX). I will (hopefullly) be very low down in the queue, having to wait ages to stepup. When g80 comes out, I will stepout of the 7950 queue and into the 8800GTX queue (you are allowed to step out once (right?)) - then I just have to wait AGES to get a 8800GTX, which I don't mind doing at all :D

Are there any flaws in my plan? I'm pretty sure this is allowed/will work.

Yes, the 7950 GX2. It's HDCP ready and it will double your performance in games. Just make sure your motherboard is compatible. IMHO it's the only card that's worth buying this close to the launch of DX10 cards.

Actually I don't know, since I'm not that familiar with eVGA's step-up specific conditions, but it sure seems like a good plan :)

You could Step-Up to the new 7900GTO 512MB for $30 +shipping since it's now on the eVGA website for $299.99. It's basically a Double Slot 7900GTX with the same 650MHz Core and Cooler but with lower clocked memory. Looks like Nvidia is trying to get rid of it's remaining G71 Cores before the release of the 8XXX. Seems like a great price for about the same card that came out with a MSRP of $499.99.

Anyone just wanting to buy one, ZZF had them for $249.99 but they sold out already.

So.. I've got 10 days left on my 7900GT KO step-up. I'm currently eyeing the 7900GTO.

I assume they're using at least 1.4V to get the 650 core?

I've got a 1.5VMod and am running @ 650/1680 right now... would it be worth the $30 to get the GTO? I assume there's still some OC headroom available...maybe 690 core?

Unfortunately, the 7900GTO is NOT showing up in the step-up drop-down menu on eVGA's site. :(

10 days....

can anyone confirm that you are allowed to stepout of your current queue into another card's queue? provide a link? this would greatly help me, thanks very much!

Brahmzy,
Sorry about that, I didn't know the 7900GTO wasn't on the Step-Up list yet. Maybe you could do something like MrMeikel is planning. Step-Up to the 7950GT 512MB (if it's on the list) so as to lock yourself into your 90 day window. It more than likely has a waiting queue and you can switch out of it when the 7900GTO makes the list.
The worse thing that could happen is you get offered a 7950GT 512MB before the 7900GTO makes the list and you can switch. You can always refuse it and drop out. Also the cost of a Step-Up is the difference between what you payed for your card and the MSRP of the Step-Up card +shipping.

When I was in the Step-Up program you were allowed to switch as long as you were in a waiting queue. And many were doing it and I assume that is still the case now. But check the eVGA website Forums to make sure. The Moderators there will answer those questions.

I also done the Volt Mod. to my CO SC too and it does 700MHZ Core with ease on 1.4 Volts and its Samsung memory always O/Ced to over 1800MHz out of the box.
Can't Step-Up a Step-Up though so I guess I'll have to wait for 8XXX.
