The problem: Computer randomly shuts down. (ex. when you hold down your power button it turns the computer off instantaniously) There is no freezing or indication that this is happening (i.e. no "windows is shutting down" screen.) After it shuts down it some power turns back on, like the case fans.. but not the monitor or anyother equipment that I know of.

I have upgraded my PSU and processor and this problem still occurs. I have ran memtest86 through 3 loops without any errors. Case/processor does not over heat (35-40C.)

Does anyone have any ideas? This has been happening now for some months and I keep hitting brickwalls trying to troubleshoot the issue.

Stop turning your computer off with the power button. What happens when you shut down your computer properly? Start ---> Turn Of Computer ----> Restart/Turn Off

Hehe, I don't think he's pressing the power button, I think he was using that as an example of the "shutdown/restart."

Anyhow, what PSU do you have? and what are you other components? Also, how old is your house? do you have a UPS with AVR? Are there any other high-power appliances plugged in within the same room (eg. A/C)?

Thanks for not reading my post. I was providing that as an example of how instantaneously my computer shuts off. This happens randomly and only 1-2 within 2-4weeks. I can shut my computer down just fine.

As to the other post I was having the same problems I am having now when I had a different processor and PSU. I now have a higher wattage psu (550w w/ dual 12v's) and am still having this problem. I bought a new surge protector and only my computer is hooked up to it.

AMD 4400+
Patriot 2gb (2x 1gb)
Antect 550w smartpower 2
bfg 6800 gt oc
asus a8n deluxe
creative x-fi xtreme music

Anyone have any other tips? Do you think it might be the motherboard going out?

real shot in the dark here.

I have seen several posts about the x-fi card being picky about what slot it is in. I know this makes no sense, those kind of issues were susposed to have been killed back in the AT formfactor days. But who knows and its easy (I would think) to move it to another slot and see if anything gets better.

If BillParish's idea doesnt work, you may want to get a UPS with AVR. If it doesnt solve your problem, at least now you have clean power running to your PC, hehe. I know there was a bad batch of Antec PSU's, but I keep forgetting which specific model. Call antec and ask them about it... though I doubt this is your problem, since you said you had the problem with a different PSU... but it doesnt hurt to call and ask. You said you had the same problem with a different CPU and PSU... same mobo? or different mobo?

I love getting old and senile, every day is brand new.

It wasnt the slot, it was the driver, this guy had simular issues and swithced to some other drivers for the x-fi. Worth a shot. Might change slot too, and I heard that sprinking chicken blood around the computer helps when dealing with creative products

*cry* the x-fi issue was only driver related. This random shut down occured when I had my old psu and processor as well, it still now happens with my brand new PSU and proc.
