Anyone picked up Enchanted Arms for the 360 yet? It looked interesting at first, but then Tycho from Penny Arcade said "I played it just long enough to see a gay man attack a prom queen with a magic saxophone. I decided to return to that one by the light of day." Sounds a bit odd.. Any thoughts on it?

i love it personally. Yah that guy is annoying but he doesn’t last to long if you actually play it and not just give up after 20 minutes and start crying. I have played about 7-9 hours already and the story is good and the game play is tight. Just remember this is a classic style rpg ( turn based )

9.2 out of 10 from me

Great game. Actually the more I play it, the more addicted I get.

edit. I'd rate it a 8.5

I want this game.

I've never played a classic RPG, which is ok because i was looking for something new and different when i saw this game. The trailer on xbox.com looks cool. I guess i'll give it a try when it drops in price.

I read the multiplayer preview at IGN and decided this game is pretty goddamn lame.

IGN gave it a 7.5 which is decent. Meaning if you have a 360, buy it. If not, it's not a system seller but it's good.

I'd get it now but I got to wait to see if the woman picks it up for me b-day :D

Been following this one for a while, as it's supposed to be a bit of a throwback to older RPGs, just what I've been looking for. Just haven't gotten a chance to pick it up and try it. :|

i didnt even know this was a multiplayer game.... i havent even tried it i just love the story and the game play.

I haven't checked it out yet, I am caught up in to PS2 RPGs at the moment (Dragon's Quest VIII and FFVI (from FF Chronicles)) so I don't have the mindspace or the time at the moment (I find it hard to keep up with too many RPG storylines at once). I do intend to pick it up when I finish these too though, but buy that time FFXII will be out... Maybe I will get the opportunity to take advantage of MS's version of the 'greatest hits' program if it does really well, if not, I can just pick it up cheap used at EB Games.

How are the graphics in high definition? The reviews i've read so far said it doesn't look next gen, but i'm curious what you guys think.

If you have any interest in JRPG's do yourself a favor and pick this up. While its nothing new its a lot of fun, nice looking on my HDTV, and its one of the few US side JRPG's where we actually get the japanese audio track. (in which the Rocky Horror reject is less annoying)

I haven't tried the multiplayer yet but I think its just a little extra mode nothing that you can really sink your teeth into like the single player game. I've got I think about 10 hours into it so far and I'm about 20% in.

Well worth the purchase IMO. I was flip flopping on buying it at first but I'm glad I decided to in the end.

So this game has the original japanese dialogue? sweeeeeet. Definitely buying it now. I HATE dubbed audio.

QFT, man. QFT.

Unless the dub is good, of course (which rarely happens).

I read a couple reviews that said to turn on the Japanese voice and read the english subtitles because the english voice acting is so horrific.

If you like the old school sytle of RPG's, then yes, it's a very good game. It certainly doesn't push any boundaries of the genre, that's for sure. And once you get a few hours in and you get past the 'flaming' characters, it starts to get more enjoyable.

If you like the classic turn-based, grid gameplay like I do, then the game is a definite must-try. A rental at the very least.

I certainly enjoy these types of games more than the Oblivions.

I think that the game is great. I haven't played an old-school RPG in a while, and I didn't feel like replaying Lunar:SSSC.

The battle system starts out somewhat complex, but you get the hang of it very quickly. The dialog is actually very well written and complex, but the English dubbing kind of kills it; as others have said, turn to Japanese audio with the English subtitles. It's got a decent story so far (I'm only 5 hours in), and I've heard that it gets even better and more compelling as the game continues.

Graphically, it could be a little better in parts, but it runs with a smooth framerate, and looks better than any other JRPG I've played. I place it squarely in the middle of "next-gen" territory; there's no way you could mistake this for some xbox or PS2 game.

Personally, I think it was well worth the Chromehounds trade-in.

Game is pretty fun after a while, it had a really slow start and that one guy was annoying as hell, but now its getting pretty good. It kind of reminds me of pokemon a little, with all the "golems" that you have to "catch" by fighting\buying them.

I'm about 1.5 hours in and I'm enjoying it. It's really nice to play an actual turn based RPG, where you couldn't find one for years after FF went to real time hybrid. The gay guy with the saxophone ... well, he's a character I never thought I'd be playing in a game. But it did seem I could only go three steps before a battle started when I walked through the last area :(

I'm playing with 720p HD graphics and I'm very satisfied. The graphics are really nice.

Don't worry. Mr. Saxaphone (Makoto?) isn't with you for too long.

Enchanted Arms is basically a JRPG but with all the masochism removed. It has a pretty typical cliched japanese/anime storyline. Typical cliched japanese/anime characters. Which is not to say they are bad, I found them well executed, but you know, it's still typical.

Where it really shines is all the things they did to streamline gameplay and take out all the frustration. You can save anywhere, retry lost battles, fast foward attack animations, autofight battles (primarily useful when walking around old areas), skip cutscenes/dialog, and the list just goes on and on.

No longer will you have to watch the same 10-20 minutes of cutscene a million times because the boss right after it thrashes you. No longer will you have to deal with a random encounter every 3 steps from the last save point to the part thats actually giving you trouble. No longer are you forced to listen to every single line of sometimes pointless dialog, or wait on the slow execution of the acting while you've already read the line. You no longer are forced to personally deal with trash mobs 10 levels lower than you when you revisit an old area.

This game has been like a godsend to me since I simply do not have the time or the patience to deal with 40-50 hour RPGs that waste my time with the above. I'm looking at you FFX.

Hmm, you have just perked my interest in this game. Especially since you can save anywhere you want. I find it annoying how so many games require you to hunt down save points.

Okay, who needs PR people when companies have got you guys. I think I will pick this game up simply because i've been itching for an old classic turn based rpg.

I have been too for awhile now, which is why I picked (rented) this game up. And I must say, despite it's obvious Japanese flavor, it is still satisfying that itch nicely.

That's kind of a weird thing to write considering turn-based and Japanese go together like white on rice.

Finally got a chance to play, and I'd have to say I like it. For me it's somewhere between FF7 (linear story, shared tech\magic, artistic world), and Gladius (grid combat).

It's running @720 on my display, and it looks nice to me. There are plenty of active effects on the walls and other elements, with a recurring circuit\PCB style. It's a far cry from most RPGs out there, but I like turn based combat because there's more strategy involved than while(true) HackAndSlash();

Funnily enough, penny arcade is talking about this game again at the moment.

And I love their comic about it; the comic they have pretty much describes the stupid reviews this game is getting. Thank you, Penny-Arcade, for having a bit of common sense.

I had a $25 reward certificate to Micro-Center, so I picked it up earlier today. I have to say that while the game is way way way too slow paced for my taste, i'm really having a lot of fun. The turn based team combat really brings back a lot of memories for me. The graphics arn't really that good. This game has a nice storyline that doesn't make sense at all, but does keep things flowing.I just wish there was less talk, and more action. The voice acting is just terrible period. The Japanese voicing is just as bad, so I at least chose to listen to voices in a language that i'm fluent in. I know some Japanese, but am not fluent in it like I am in English and Korean.

Yeah, the graphics aren't "Rockstar Table Tennis" good per-character (they could be improved a little), but the sheer amount of stuff that can go on onscreen at once is astounding. Try that festival scene about an hour into the game; it really shows what the engine can do. And, it's one of the few games that I think uses bump-mapping tastefully.

I guess it's all about what you want. I love, LOVE turn-based RPG's, even though I haven't played one in a while. I think it was time to take a break from FPS'.

Well, I had a little time and spent about 6 hours in the game and my views have changed a lot. The story is now starting to make sense, and is really driving this game foward. In fact, it's rather involving and could have been more emotional if the voice talent had been decent. The graphics are also not really that bad. They are definately better than PS2/Xbox 1.0 standards, but just nowhere near X360 standards. The graphics are about as good as Gun for the X360 for those of you who have played it. The plus side is that the frame rates are liquid super smooth. The battle scenes are also very well animated, and a bit beautiful.

The bottom line, is not to form any judgement on this game based on the first 3-4 hours. After you get into the 4th-5th hour, this game really starts to shine and become a real gem.

That's kind of an odd assumption to make considering I never said anything about turn-based. I love turn-based games - perhaps my favorite genre. What I don't like about stereotypical Japanese RPG's are the fruity teenage characters that skip around on sceen wielding lollypops and shit.

Yeah, funny you should mention that. I'm starting to think that they included the flaming homosexual character for the sole purpose of making the main character seem more manly by comparison, even though all things considered, he's still sort of emo.

That homosexual guy is so flaming gay, that's it's a bit excessive. I just want to choke the crap out of him as he is really annoying. He does play a nice support role, until that unfortunate thing about 3 hours into the game that happens to him and Toyo.

I get the feeling you'd love Shin Megami Tensei.
