First Dell now Maxtor

Hmmmm. If this does turn out to be true, I wonder if Maxtor/Seagate will recall them.

Coincidently, I own two of the DiamondMax 10, SATA 150, 250GB flavors. I can vouch that they get fucking HOT.

Let's see... an isolated poorly written submission on some website (that can't even handle a few simultaneous hits). Yup... we better call Maxtor/Seagate out on this one for sure.

Bullshit. I'm no fan of Maxtor drives as far as overall reliability is concerned, but I also know they aren't exploding all over the place as this 'news post' would desperately like to the reader believe.

Isolated incident, hell if the guy "modded" his case twice as decently as he designed his website the thing probably had metal shavings in it or something. :p

im almost sure someone is going to say, "well he shouldnt have brought it from newegg cuz the shipping sucks."

*just waits for someone to say that* :ninja:

I call BS... if Maxtor drives were going to explode and die mine would've by now.

I wrote the article late last night.. sorry if it wasn't up to your journalistic standards...

as for case modding, I've been in MaxPC and PC Extreme Mags and won BAWLS award as well...
so I guess I can't mod either..

The reason it can't handle the hits is that it got /. and Dugg at same time.. sorry, I'm not rich enough to pay for a couple hundred doller per month server... and it didn't die, just hit refresh and it works..

LMAO, I knew it.... :D

Aside from whatever magazines you've been mentioned in, I *am* sorry you're out a hard drive. Sucks when it happens.

I honestly didn't think it was going to get this much attention.... I just figured it was some different and a bit interesting content for the site...

With how hot mine gets, I dont doubt it

Maxtor needs to cool down their drives.

-Cameron

Lots of it. It gets much warmer then the 7200.10 I have. Burnt my finger on it...

Ive got a 120mm blowing directly over the drives.

-Cameron

What the fuck.

I have the same hard drive. Exactly the same.

/cowers in fear

I had it in my CoolerMaster Centurion case, the drive cage is located directly in front of the front 120mm fan so there was airflow, the temps usually hovered in the high 30's to low 40's depending on the ambient temp, or if I had the AC on or not..

i have a 320gb maxtor diamond max. runs around 34c. my raptor runs hotter.

I have had a DM10 stop spinning a week ago, but sure didn't catch on fire. Another DM10 and a MLIII are doing good. I'd have to hear this from a more reputable source.

@ MetalX

Well, I've gotten many emails from people that had the same exact chip fry on their Maxtor HDD, and if you look at the Digg comments you'll see many more accounts of it as well..

I got one email from a guy who put a heatsink on the chip itself becuase it was so hot and he heard about these problems

No suprise that you got burned.

I've bought many-a-drive from newegg, and I've never received a bad one. I agree that their shipping has gotten pretty stinky, but it's not affected the way my drives operate when I receive them.

I've airflow on the drives, and it cools them only a bit. I'm actually selling them in a few days, just ordered my WD 250GB from newegg on tuesday :p

u win doug lite :p i knew someone was going to say this. lol

I can vouch for it. It happened to me on a 60gig Maxtor.

If I still have it (I think I kept it), I can post some picks up online tonight.

Update September 1st: Well as per instruction by Maxtor, I only need to send back the top cover of the HDD with the information on it, so when I took the top off I discovered the platters were scorched as well, at least they look scorched to me..... but I am sure someone will correct me.... I've added a bunch of pics of the platters and drive without the top

while I have no experience with HDD platters, I would call that scratched, not scorched.

and yet another reason why not to buy Maxtor :D :D :D

And dont blame the battery issue on Dell, it is Sony that provided the power supplies and batteries :D

Right, because Maxtor definitely makes every single part on their drives, so it's definitely their fault. That Samsung label, for example, is just to confuse you. Oh, and those scars look like maybe this drive has been through more than the author states - the heads won't come out of the "park" position (if the drive's off) without a considerable drop. Given that the L7250E is the motor controller, I think it's entirely possible that a head crash due to shock happened, and then the motor controller was unable to keep up with the hugely increased load of pushing the platter with the head ploughing a furrow in it and melted. This looks like user error to me.

Umm no I didn't drop it...

I am very careful with anything concerning my computer, ESPECIALLY my main hard drive

I'm ashamed of you guys, questioning this guy like this. I mean, he's been in magazines and everything....

Cute

I don't understand, why is it so hard to believe that it happened like it did?

Everyone seems to be coming up with an explanation and basically calling me a liar, I don't get it...

Dont sweat it man, i've seen it happen. Anything can happen with hardware, you can never know what can and what cannot happen till it does. I have seen a lot of crap like this, when i worked for a computer store.

maybe it was the tone of the title that turned people off?
It is not uncommon for chips to 'let the magic smoke out.'
Saying that Maxtor drives are a liability, like the Dell batteries, based on a single observed instance may rub some people on here the wrong way, given the statistical insignificance.
However, who knows if there aren't many more of these instances happening, people just don't talk about it?

I hope my post's wording was a neutral as possible, because I honestly have no stance on this "issue". I am just trying to provide a reason why people may have been a bit stand-offish.

Maybe you really DON'T get it:

It's not the fact that your drive died that we doubt - it's the cocky attitude of you and your buddy trying to blow this up into some huge ass problem like the Dell battery issue. You guys even directly make the comparison.

It's a stupid and childish way for you to drum up hits on your little website. One that any of us with half a brain can see right through.

Like I said, I'm sorry you lost a drive. Shit happens. Contact Maxtor/Seagate and I am sure they will get you a replacement if it's under warranty.

Who's my buddy????? What 'us guys'???

I know no one on these forums personally... so I have no clue what teh hell you are talking about...

and as for drumming up hits for my site.... isn't that what anyone who owns a site wants?

I've submitted many things to SlashDot and Digg, this is THE FIRST thing that was ever picked up there.... check my profile on Digg and see what got dugg.. it's under Dampeal cause Dracos was taken by someone else...

You act like this is some sort of conspiracy that I am embroiled in... I stuck it up on my website for some content, just a story of what happened to me... Look around, people do it all the time.. I guess cause it got dugg and Slahdotted that's somehow my fault.......

HOW THE HELL was I supposed to know that it was going to get this much attention.. I don't run /. and I have no say what gets dugg or not...

Dude, what exactly did I do to you to piss you off at me this much for you to get on me this bad?

So basically if something I write about happens to get a lot of attention I'm a bad person and a liar?!?!?!

and AGAIN, I have no BUDDY here, so I have no clue what that is about, or where you pulled that out of...

woah dude, calm down. no need for so much cursing. yes it does suck that your drive decided to take the big of a dump on you, but not need to continue to flame. yelling and screaming and acting like a 4 year old doesnt get you ahead in life. being nice to people and calmly explaining the situtation gets you many more things in life....well, at least thats how things have gone for me at least. please calm down and hopefully people would be more sympathetic to you.

Actually I am calm...

I think it's funny actually, if this story didn't get the attention that it did, it wouldn't be a big deal to anyone, but since it got dugg etc it's now a big deal and everyone has something to say about it...and most of it is basically calling me a liar and saying I am trying to pull something..

Honestly I do think it's funny, and if you took it like I was yelling, or whatever, I wasn't I was just going for the same tone as the post and person I responded to, childish and immature.

So I guess I got my point across then.

People take things way to seriously, and people should not read more into things that they have no clue about, looking for something that is just not there.

y'all get off dracos ass, I agree with him.

I haven't had a Maxtor drive since my 4.3GB made this nice loud clunk noise one day, and no longer worked afterward and I lost all my fallout saved games . I have had western-digital, or Seagate since. While I don't think this is the next big issue (ie: sony batteries), it does have to be looked at. From the response he got, I would guess this isn't an isolated incident.

This. Hard drives don't spontaneously make gouges in themselves. And the fact that the motor controller is what burned out is what makes me suspicious of your whole setup. Sorry.
