LG L204WT: 5ms and 2000:1 contrast

nice pictures kick. i actually picked up the samsung 205BW this weekend and i love it so far. i took a look at the LG L204WT as well over the weekend, and even though it would've been a little cheaper, returns at circuit city seem to be more of a hassle than at officemax. officemax is also much closer to my house.

the lg i saw in store looked beautiful, though, and i can see why it seems as if everyone likes theirs. i can't compare the lg and the samsung side by side, but im very pleased with the picture on my samsung, even coming from the viewsonic vx2025wm. it's nice to have the adjustable stand and black bezel on my samsung though, so i think it's a keeper.

i don't think you can go wrong with either one.

My sentiments exactly. Both are very capable displays and good value for the money.

I looked into ordering the Dell 2007WFP but I don't know if I want to get involved with Dell's "Total Satisfaction Return Policy". From their Canadian site, the original purchaser has 30-days to return a produce for refund. Unfortunately, if it has to go back i'm out the return shipping, which would have to be insured w/ tracking, and possibly a 15% restocking fee. Return shipping I would be fine with, but with the restocking fee it could cost me ~$100CDN to return the display if i'm not pleased, which is concerning, especially if Dell is still in the business of mixing panels under the same model.

@ kick, I really like the look of those screenshots you posted of the Samsung 205BW. Now I wanna buy one, but will my card, a Leadtek GeForce 7600 GT Extreme 256MB factory overclocked, be able to run games @ 1680 x 1050 which I believe is the native resolution for a 20" widescreen. I need advice before I hit the buy button, don't wanna make an expensive mistake! ... anyone?

it only takes a few minutes to look at the million benchmarks on the web and decide for yourself. if you are trying to play most modern games then HELL NO. the 7600GT is just too weak for the resolution. rest assured though that some clown will say "my 7600GT runs games on all high settings at 1680x1050". ;)

runs

at 8fps

You would need a fairly high-end card at full screen (1680x1050). I've got a Sapphire X1600XT in my machine at the moment so the highest I can go is 1280x1024 and still managed decent FPS. If I want to turn on some eye candy then I have to drop the resolution down a bit more. Gaming is my primary use of the PC tho, so i'm going to spend more on a card and dropping the resolution doesn't bother me.

I do like the Samsung tho - it's a very nice display. I posted another thread recently and i'm looking for new work displays. I'm probably going to go with dual 17" LCD's in that case but it begs the question now. For home use, should I stick with the single 20" WXGA or go with a dual 17" or 19" traditional LCD's???

Great display! i just used mine for about a week and its more than good for me, games are great, videos are fair enough for me

the only bad side is probably the cheap stand, it makes the monitor shake when i hit the desk by accident.
also, when using the dvi plug, i found the start time is a little long comparing to my moms samsung syncMaster 730B

i still recommanding it to any one! a

but do not worry about it. I have 7600GT so far, i am going to buy this monitor, and until Dx10 graphics cards will be out, i will be using my 7600GT with it. It is much more affordable to me then buying two highend SLI cards now and trading them in later for another expensive pair of whatever Dx10 card will be called like. 7600GT for now, single (and more powerfull) Dx10 card later - that is my pondering
:p .

Seems like many here are no longer talking about the LG. Anyway, I got the L204 and took a look at the warranty card. It says the backlight is only warrantied for one year, not three. Mine also has a fair bit of backlight bleeding from the top and sides. Deciding if these two factors are enough to return it.

No comments on the one year warranty?

Need to make a decision today, is one year enough for the backlight?

The backlight is generally teh first thing to go. I would not buy a monitor that did not cover atleast 3 years on the backlight.

I must say though, the whites on this LCD are sure white. Sitting next to my Dell 2405, the Dell's white looks like year old newpaper, all yellowy. Tried adjusting the Dell, can't really change that.

BTW, I went to the LG website, found their area on warranties, and its states that ALL their LCDs carry a three year warranty on the backlight. So I wonder why the documentation that came with it says otherwise? I send them an email, hope I hear before having to send it back.

on those bottom pics thats the worse screendoor effect I have ever seen.

I think it's not bad at all. Those pics are taken so close to the screen so no wonder why those pixels are seen so clearly. You get similar results even with CTR if you take really close camera shots.

When I was using VGA i noticed screendoor effect. However when I switched to DVI everything was perfect. One gripe I have about this monitor is that in movie mode if you have a movie that switchs between bright and dark alot (I watch alot of anime and thats pretty frequent in anime). The lag when the chip adjusts the contrast will be very noticeable. However all in all the quality of this LCD is very very good.

I noticed someone mentioned the whites on this LCD and I share the same feeling. The whites are incredibly...well...white. I have an old Eizo L66 next to me and Iv seen a couple Dells and this is by far the best. Kinda funny how the Eizo cost 10x more than this baby and is only 18in when I got it lol.

there is absolutely NO screendoor effect on my CRT monitor. there is on a CRT television but not on a CRT computer monitor.

You can hardly see it with bare eye but (as I said) take a close camera shot and you can really see it.

nope. I can clearly see it on my tv at about 6 inches away but see none whatsoever on my crt comp monitor. didnt show up on the camera either. it might be there but is so small that it is not noticeable.

Ok, here is an example how things look on my monitor. I can't normally see those color circles.

And the point was that things look crappy when you take a really close look. And I don't think that L204WT has serious screendoor effect problem.

wow i cannot find this monitor ANYWHERE, Futureshop is sold out, Bestbuy doesnt have it, NCIX doesnt have it. now i have to wait :( wtf lol. nowhere in canada can i find this LOL

Just found something else. You know how if you press against an LCD with your finger it fads back. Well, in the lower left side, right up against the bezel theres a spot like someone put their baby figure on it. It doesn't remain constant, but comes forward and fads back (pulsates). You can only see it with a few colours, and most of the time, it doesn't show at all. Just plan odd. Wonder if there is something behind the panel pushing against it? Anyone have some ideas?

Might just give up and get the Samsung. Hey, to the guy in Canada looking for one, you can buy mine.
;)

Ok, I'm going to be getting this monitor this weekend. Question is do I buy it now? Or, wait til Sunday see if there is any coupons or sales since the $40 coupon expired?

i just bought the LG194wT it is the same spec as the l204WT but is the 19inch verison
i have never had a lcd before. i am coming from a viewsonic a90f+ . When i first turn on the monitor it was very bright and very sharp. I tturned down the sharpness way down
and the brightness . I was playing wow and stuff i notice the colors seem washed out
then i figured out how to get the different display modes and what a difference
i dunno if i like the resolution of the 19inch monitor i will probably just take it back
i have one bad pixel its stuck on blue in the top right hand corner doesn;t bother me as much very little to no black light bleeding on this screen and absolutley no ghosting
i tried to make it ghost by running around and doing stuff on the screen but it stays very crisp and clear. this is a VERY sharp monitor. But i dunno the colors are cool in temp
i think this monitor is pretty nice though..

UPDATE: well ive had this monitor for a day now its screen is really sharp and people were right about the whites being really white it almost to bright . i finally figure out how to get the colors to be rich in games by using the movie mode . the monitor kicksass for gaming no ghosting i swear. i watched a few movies seemed a little grainy sometimes and sometimes the skin tones didn't look perfect but i think thats because of lcd technology like the colors were accurate it was less precise than my old crt in that respect but i do like this monitor way better than my crt like Wow seems to pop right off the screen the image is so a sharp. But i think iam gonna return this monitor for the 20" verison just because of the higher resolutions that it can display . if it wasn't for the low res of 1440x900 i would keep this display

After reading a lot of reviews, I was totally convinced on getting the L204WT, but the fact that it was only available through circuit city did scare me a bit, so I decided to go instead with the Samsung 205WB and I love it. It's real sharp, has no ghosting, no dead pixels and no noticible bleeding or banding, and also is a tad cheaper than the L204WT. :)

BTW I was really tempted to get the 215TW, I saw on display at the store and it does look amazing, it was $200 more expensive, for those who are not on a budget I would recommend getting that.

i would not dare buy a LCD from CC ..they have weird return policys and arent as forgiving as Fry's Computer.

I was looking at teh samesung 205bw but they didn't have it on display here at office max
or in the store for that matter . the contrast is really good on this 19in lg though blacks look really black and whites are really blinding white i just wish this one had 1650x1050 resolution . Also i wish i could see the 205bw i always like to save money
one feature i really like about the lg is that it splits the screen in half and lets you see what setting options difference there is between your current and new settings . Very useful .

I just got home from future shop, picked this up for $349 on sale. The sale started Sept 1st, and there was ONE LEFT today... Seems like their selling out quit fast. Picture is great, too bad its 16:10... theres nasty black bars on 16:9 video. Blacks are great, picture is clear and sharp.

I have it hooked up via DVI-D for my PC and VGA for my Xbox 360. The 360 looks GREAT on this monitor. I have NO dead pixels, and minimal backlight leakage at the top of the screen.

I love this screen, sure beats my Benq 19" 5:4 LCD that I had previously.

(YES, I know!!! The pictures are bad quality... I have a crappy 2.0megapixel camera)

I'm quite confused right now. I have seen lot of different specs about L203WT and L204WT but what is the real aspect ratio of these two monitors? Are they both 16:9 or 16:10? or what?
I would really appreciate if someone could answer.

awesome man, i just got mine from futureshop too, just got back and hooked it up, i've gotta say it looks SWEET!! no dead pixels yet,(thank god for the 3yr warranty :D). BTW how did u hook up your 360 to the monitor? do you have some kind of adapter or something?

They are 16:10 ratios 5ms reponse times 2000:1 dynamic contrasts .253 dot pitch

these lgs have this cool contrast effect where it will dim slightly dark if your in the dark shadows or something its pretty cool when your like exiting a dark tunnel .

Yeah, this monitor is awesome...

Just a note: if your still using VGA, you should really consider buying a DVI-D cable from ebay for like $8... DVI cables just make your life easier and a Digital connection is better than Analoug.

To hook up you're Xbox 360 to a monitor you need a VGA Cable adapter. I picked one off ebay for $15. I think they are $49 at future shop. Anyways, heres a picture of the packaging.

can you get one with a black bessel?

of course my monitor isn't black either and I just now noticed it LOL

really is this supposed to be the best 20in widescreen right now..
some have said better than the 2007 or the viewsonic.
How is lg on warranty?
