My copy should be here in a couple of days so i wanted to get a Darkstar One (DS1) thread going to talk about the game.

Gamespot really liked it and says it is a really first rate space sim. The screenshots look great too.

Has anyone had the chance to play it yet?

I played the demo. It was rather enjoyable. But I was able to quickly and accidentally get most of the factions pissed at me, and was kill-on-sight for nearly everyone. Oops.

i DL'd the demo yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it.

i dont have my joystick unpacked (just moved), so i dont know how well that works out, but this game takes me back a ways to the good times in space sims. im definatly going to get this game next weekend, when the budget permits :)

Gogamer.com has it for less than $30 right now.

that may be true, however, i just moved out to my own place. i put nearly all of my cash into savings to pay rent, and am saving for an HDTV.

i'll get the game soon enough though, it is truly a classic style space simmer from what i have experianced, im not gonna miss out! :D

Good game. It feels a lot like Freelancer though.
It does have joystick support though I prefer mouse/keyboard.

Haven't played enough to say more then that. The demo gives a decent approximation of what the game is like as the beginning of the game is the exact same as the demo.

I've got a copy in the mail too. I just remembered, I need to buy a new joystick, since my old one is broken.

played the demo, loved it. reminded me too much of freelancer tho, but thats all good. played it with mose and keyboard still enjoyable.

Got my copy. It does feel alot like Freelancer, but with a bit less randomness in the aftermission periods. It's fairly easy to scrounge up cash, so upgrading should be easy.

One negative, it doesn't work in 1680x1050 resolution yet. The option is there, but it crashes to desktop when you start in that resolution. Hopefully that will get patched soon.

I Abolutly LOVED freelancer (Chris roberts is awesome). So that makes me even more stoked to get mine.

so whats the game about and how does it compare to freespace 2?

It's nothing like FS2. Really it's more like Freelancer but with more to do, escorting, trade, smuggling, pirating, mining etc... Unlike the repetitive missions in Freelancer. I think Freelancer had more exploration though.

It's not really a sim it's more of an action space shooter with RPG elements. I like this style more than the hardcore X series of space sims.

My only criticism is that the target list and map shows where the hidden artifacts are. I want to explore some and find hidden loot like I did in freelancer. As it is now in DS1 you enter a system and your sensors show you everything in that sector.

I am having a few bugs with the game. Currently if i try to buy missles the game crashes. Aslo when ever I leave the base and go outside the textures screw up. Probably just need to reinstall drivers but though I would let you all know incase you also had these errors.

Texture corruption can be caused by one of several issues. You are on the right track with driver reinstallation. Are you using a beta driver of some sort? If so you might try dropping back to an official release. Also, if you are overclocking your video card you might be having some heat related issues from that. I noticed when I had a 6800GT Halo would have texture issues when I overclocked the card. The missle bug could be just that, a bug. Is this the demo or full version?

dude, its a known crack issue with Darkstar one, most of the cracks so far mess up the game, including crashed while trying to buy missiles, and violent shanking of the screen, kaythx.

Its not a pirated version ass. And yes it is a beta driver. I have reinstalled the driver and the game and my errors have gone away.

Cool, I've been looking at this game and am D/Ling the demo as we speak. I hope it is good.

You will enjoy it. I like being able to upgrade my ships weapons, engine, and such.

Damn I got the demo and love this game, but its sold out at EB games and gamestop near me :(

As it has been mentioned, this game is like Freelancer except that you fly the same ship throughout the entire game but you do get to upgrade the ship (in addition to buying better equipment). Also, Freelancer has a better varierty of scenery and the territories of the different races is also more interesting in Freelancer.
Still, Darkstar One is very fun if you like the space-sim/adventure type of games.
All in all, I like this game a lot. :)

I found the game was fun to begin with but now it's getting very repetetive and the story is kind of boring.. Is there more to this game than killing pirates and finding artifacts or what?

I agree the game was cool at first but now I seem to be playing just to finish upgrading my ship. All of the games battles play out the same way. The weapons need more variation. And the constant warp loading screen warp loading screen gets old fast.

I guess I'll still wait for another game to top out my all time favorites (Wing Commander I&II) Freelancer was pretty good but not really as good as it could have been. Funny how graphics get better but not necessarily gameplay :p

I have so far gotten past the snake race to the next sector and have upgraded only my hull so that I can have turrets and wow talk about great weapons. 2 front guns and 4 turrets and pirates are short work.

Great game a little repetitive and the voice acting is very poor. But the main sotry line does does offer up some differnt challenges.

So you upgraded the wings to get the 2 front guns and then all hull points or did you upgrade the engines to get the better sheilds too?

Upgraded the wings once to get the second gun and better turning then everything else into the hull. Now have 5 turrets 3 on top 2 on bottom and slide my energy all the way to the shields and wade into the pirates. Usually fire a few missiles and the turrets take care of the rest. I am starting to think that the turrets are a little overpowered as they can fire continuously with out draining any energy almost.

If anyone is having some issues playing the game juice the hull then work on other things.

And make sure you hunt down the pirate groups to get the "Secret service weapons" especially the turret ones!
