just wondering what on earth a pcie x1 slot is
i have an sli mobo and its just there inbetween them looking odd
what the heck is it for?
what dose it do?
why is it needed?

It's for add-in cards which use a PCI=E X1 interface, which gives more bandwidth than the older PCI slot format.

It's not needed unless you have a PCI-E X1 card to use in the thing, and there are very few of those in circulation. There are some audio cards, some network cards, and a small number of low performance display cards which use the interface, but they're not common.

Just let it sit there and ignore the thing :)

There always seems to be some kind of slot that never get's used. I remember the ...er... what was it called... MNR slot? Anyhow, it's current generation, but no one really bothers to make cards for it. As previously stated, there are a few but mostly it's pointless.
Not sure if it's a technological issue or companies are just lazy but they just sit there mostly.
:(

personally i hate them with a passion. When i'm running SLI and my motherboard only lets me get to 2 of my PCI slots, while the other slots are sitting there rotting away I almost cry.

They have some problems with soundcards in PCIe slots, which really sucks because that is what i would put in there

Its just that companies havent started making enough products for 1x slots yet. It will happen eventually. Remember, most vendor systems dont currently have anything but regular pci slots. I'm sure they will start shifting to 1x pci-e soon enough, then youll see the market move away from normal pci.

Agreed.

It's not really comparble to the CNR slot debacle, as that one was a basically redundant technology when it first appeared. The CNR slot was for half-arsed cards which did the work in software rather than in hardware, and it appeared at a time when motherboards began to include a full set of integrated features anyway.

The PCI-E X1 slot, on the other hand, provides more bandwidth availability than the PCI standard. Manufacturers will use it eventually, for sure.

Well by the time the cards come into the market, the motherboard will prolly be outdated.
:p

heh CNR slots I remember those.
