Xbox 360 gets open development

Why that's not a very good reason at all...

You don't really seem to understand why this is great. Indy Developers will now have an easy and cheap way to make XBOX360 and WinXP games. I think this is awesome. I look forward to the first title on XBLA madeby a couple kids in their spare time.

I think it would be very cool to see some indy games make their way to the 360. Unfortunately I dont think this will happen for some time. You still need to pay 100$ a year to use this open development, and that is without the cost of any tools. Granted it is a lot cheaper than the norm, but still not free. Also, any games created with this are only playable by other people that have this. This more open development could create the potential for some interesting XBLA games, but in the end Microsoft ultimately controls who has the right to even begin development for XBLA. That is why I think it will be some time before we start seeing a lot of indy games. First they have to make the game with these cheaper tools, then they need to pitch the concept to Microsoft, then they need to make the actual XBLA game assuming Microsoft gives them an OK.

Wrong. The games will be playable on any Xbox 360 console via Xbox Live/Disks/Online distribution.

If it just so happens that you're the next John Carmack, you may be in luck. Microsoft will release a professional version of Game Studio this spring that will not only support development, but will also allow users to sell their games on Xbox Live Arcade, on disc, or on Windows. While commercial developers may initially be the ones most attracted to Game Studio Professional, Microsoft's game plan (pun intended) clearly includes stoking amateur development in an effort to broaden the creative landscape and possibly bring some new commercial competition to the floor.

Furthermore, they're providing a vast array of tools to start with.

Dave Mitchell, Director of Marketing for Microsoft's Game Developer Group, told Ars Technica that despite the successes seen with Counterstrike and other great examples of hobbyist development, it is still too difficult for the average gamer to get involved. To this end, Game Studio Express will not only expose low-level XNA gaming APIs for ground-up development, the application will also include a number of "starter kits" that can be adapted for quicker development. These kits will provide various genres and game types from which new creations can be developed. While Game Studio Express will be most powerful for people with scripting capabilities, it is not required. Calling it a "YouTube for games," Mitchell said that he believed that putting the creative power in the hands of users will lead to great things.

If this is what I think it is - opening the platform to the masses - this is sheer brilliance and makes me very happy I bought a 360. Someone has been watching the homebrew fiasco on the PSP....pity for Sony it's their competition.

I fail to see how this can be 'bad' at all. Grats to MS for giving an opportunity to the 'little guy'.

i love the whole xbla scene with all the small cheap games, so this will only make things more interesting and bring some different and innovative games to the table

This is just amazing. Way to go Microsoft! It seems like whatever it is, Microsoft is doing to right thing PR and marketing strategy wise lately. While this new development might not actually have a significant impact on the console, it would work to definately help change people's opinions about Microsoft.

this is awesome.

i just hope that if the game is release it has to meet something because of achievments i would hate to see a few just wrack up gamer score points and noone is able to get there hands on the same game.

i know gamerscore means nothing but it gives Me (personally) replayability in games i normally wouldnt play again once i beat them.

That's not what I've read elsewhere. Unless Microsoft publishes your game officially on XBLA, the only way they can be "redistributed" is by sending the source and resources to someone else who also paid up, whereupon they can compile it for their own system and send it on over. There's not going to be an "indie games" tab or anything where you can just put anything up.

One of the more interesting and exciting things about this is the inclusion of pre-made "starter games" to give you an idea of how to use the system. That, to me, is phenomenal - I'm a pretty good programmer, but I have no graphical games development experience. Giving me a basic game to start off from is precisely what I need.

I think it's something that sounds nice in theory but will probably just end up with a bunch of poor games. Hopefully at least a few good games will come out of it.

alot of you are thinking arcade games on xbla. this is not the case look how many budget games there are out there. wouldnt be hard to eventually find a publisher even if its the bargin bin type game. This still gives games a chance to get out there.

This first release is to get things started, and as such it's really focused on getting the basic tools in place for creating cross Xbox\PC games with managed code. That also means this first release has no way to publish games up on Xbox Live, so don't worry about the quality of Arcade games taking a dive.

Rest assured, we want to enable the hobbyist\enthusiast and smaller Indy houses without having a negative impact on the experience of the average Xbox 360 gamer.

(edit: nice to finally be able to talk about work:))

That’s the standard disclaimer, Microsoft shouldn't be liable for information and help that I provide on my own time. In this case though, it’s not personal opinion, many of my coworkers are at http://www.microsoftgamefest.com/ right now doing presentations on the XNA Framework and Express Studio (and I’m now able to discuss those).

As for the other part, I’m unable to post job opening here on the forums (I’ve asked), but we still have open positions. If you are interested and think you have the appropriate skills, PM me or send email.

This is a fantastic move by MS. Shows their recent talking points about breaking down barriers were more than just that. I hope this spurs a ton of creative development and "outsider" ideas.

I bought a couple of seats of GameMaker a few months ago. The XBLA program is what this industry needs. Sony and Nintendo HAVE to do this for the survival of the game industry. Nintendo has Wii Kits for $1500 which is nice. PSP dev kits are around $2500. To buy $400* in software and make a game for the 360 is freakin' sweet. I'm gonna buy in for the yearly for this. I wonder if it comes with a Live subscription...

*If you already own other software (2D/3D apps...).

This is great news. I have been messing around with the garage game products lately, and now with the ability to port it over to the 360 I couldnt be more happy. I hope Nintendo does something similar.

Thing is though Microsoft is in a great position to do something like this, for Nintendo and Sony it would be much harder.

K600 :

You are confusing Game Studio Professional for Game Studio Express. Everything I said is exactly what has been reported for Game Studio Express. Although as [MS] has said, this is just a stepping stone, and at least a good gesture whether it pans out or not.

The reason why is cause Bill Gates is leaving and doesnt care anymore. He is on his way to fight cancer and build gundams in his garage.

LOL!!!!

This is a very great thing. If done correctly, this could vastly change console gaming. So who was saying microsoft has done nothing for innovation on the console scene?

:D
