I have one of those Linksys USB Wireless (802.11B) Network Adapter's, and I've had no end of problems with it. You know the one I mean, it’s a little black and blue box you plug in via USB so you can connect to a wireless access point...

It was dropping my connection every 5 seconds and just generaly pissing me off. Turns out, this little box is overheating. Well, it isn't now :D

Quick tutorial to getting a "WUSB11 ver 2.6" to sub zero:
1) Crack open the case and pull out the board inside.
2) Smother the board in thermal grease.
3) Put the whole mess into a sandwich bag.
4) Pop holes for, and run the antenna and USB cable through the bag (zip tie around them to make it air tight!)
5) Set the bag onto a salt water soaked cloth.
6) Fold the cloth over the bag once.
7) Add some cubes of ice to both sides of the card, then wrap the cloth around one more time to seal them in.
8) Put the whole thing into another sandwich bag so it won’t make a mess.
9) Plug it in and prey that it still works.

Yes, it actualy works. I'm using it that way right now...allthough changing out the ice every 8 or so hours is going to suck :p

You want a pic of a bag stuffed with a wet rag, with a USB cable and antena sticking out of it?

Edit: Pics are in!

Here's the Ghetto Sub-Zero Linksys USB adapter. Remember, the actual board is smothered in thermal grease (to prevent condensation) and separated from the saltwater soaked cloth (that’s holding the ice) by a sandwich bag…so I’m pretty sure it wont fry :D

The sandwich bag on the outside is just to keep it from leaking all over my floor :p

And here's the shell the board came out of, this thing feels like it was designed to hold in hot air...

It has not dropped my connection ONCE since doing this...I'm thinking about losing the ice filled cloth and just submerging the inner bag in a bucket of icey salt water, that way I won’t have to drain the bag and add more ice every 8 hours :D

That's very ghetto and certainly qualifies for a ghetto mod, but there has got to be a better way to keep it cool than that right?

just buy a phase change unit for the wireless adapter.

Trust me on this one, it makes sense.

:)

Wow..you guys are GHET-OHH. The best I have is a homemade fanbus with a bit of electrical tape on the wiring. Not even worth one foodstamp :(

Well..

5 foodstamps -1 for the zip-lock bag -1 for such a clean cloth = 3 foodstamps.

if youre not using that on a laptop , you could buy a pci wireless adapter, and just make a better antenna

btw heres my antenna

The problem with buying a PCI card is that the extension on the antenna would have to be pretty long (by Wi-Fi standards) to get it into a useful location, and if I remember correctly the signal from these cards drops off drastically as cable length increases.

Any way around that? if not I'll have to go with another external USB box.

right now ive got 3 bars, and 90-100% link quality/85% signal strenght, so i would say that its not too bad.

but usb is faster than 100 mbps, so i dont know of any big difference.

I'll probobly just buy a new one...any suggestions?

...

NO LINKSYS CRAP!
I'd go with internal personally....
But my brother uses that same linksys USB adapter you have. His doesn't get hot. Usually it falls off his desk and is lying somewhere on the floor under a pile of clothes... maybe the clothes help dissipate heat :p

Thanks for the heads up on that solution unknown-one, I had the same problem. I've been doing this for about a week now and connection is rock solid. Not the same design but it works just as well.

maybe you just have a defective unit... just found my brothers under a pile of clothes and it is barely even warm. His connection doesn't drop.

Something about mine is diffrent from other ones, there is another one in the house about 10 feet away from me which never drops connection or overheats. I'll have to see what I can do now, but I bought it in the winter when it was cool so it was never a problem. /me shrugs.

nice setup you've got there, I see you went for the gallon sized bag :p
Out of curiosity, what version is your box? Look on the bottom of the box next time you change your ice. Mine is a WUSB v2.6

inspired by a thread here in the case modding section, in which it was asked how to easy de-frost a plex window someone suggested flame polishing.

i was just curiously and tried it out by myself and took some pics of it.

the end result is more ghetto than on the pictures, it looks very uneven and there are some bubbles now.

5 foodstamps
-1 for black duct tape
-1 for cable sleeving in case
-1 for actually using what looks like a toilet paper roll and a small box under the tape

= 2 foodstamps

but shouldn't we give him extra points for the ghetto way he lengthened the fan wire ?

I am appauled, it wasnt a toilet paper role it was a cut out spray paint can lid!

Is it just to redirect the warm air to warm your feet or what?

Is it just to redirect the warm air to warm your feet or what?

it absorbs the vibration/motor noise from my exhaust fan, the more ramen noodle cups i can put together, sound goes down more. unfortunately my comp is too close to the wall, so i had to bend it

5 food stamps
-1 for brand name ramen
-1 for duct tape (usps postal tape is waht gets your points)\

3 food stamps. Go buy yourself some discount bacon now.

My friend lost the PSU bracket for his case, so I decided to make him a nice ghetto one out of some spare aluminum from my case mod.

The bracket...
