Red Orchestra Free trial

if it looks bad turn off HDR Bloom

and don't expect it too look like a new game, because its not, its still on the old UT2004 engine w/minor upgrades.

Tried it last night. Didnt like it very much at all. The clumsy controls were enough for me to stay away. It just wasnt very satisfying somehow when I killed somebody or blew up a tank. It was pretty cool though seeing a tank round fly across the map. I guess itd be ok to try and get more into if it was free, but I wouldnt pay for it thats for sure.

Yeah, that seems about right. Lots of potential, and good on paper, but in reality it's just too clumsy/shoddily-built to satisfy me. Feels clunky.

They were doing a review of Red Orchestra on G4 (i know the channel is lame) last night as I was flipping through. They gave it a horrible score and from what i saw, for good reason. There's no ammunition indicators, reload on all weapons is ungodly slow... amongst other things. They showed a group of 3 guys shooting at each other from point blank range for a good 15 seconds and every single one of their shots missed.

I am going to pass on this one. Didnt look very good at all.

I'm an experienced RO player, and I saw that review. EVERY SINGLE one of the clips they showed were taken in botmatches. It appeared that the bots were on the lowest skill settings, too. The lowest point in RO is the bot quality. They are, in most ways, absolutely abysmal, although I must say that they at least know that they need to capture objectives, unlike a good number of new players. That makes up for their lack of weapon skills.

As for those who are complaining about graphics, turn of HDR bloom. On many cards it is bugged and makes the image blurry and muddy. In addition, the most important settings for making this game look good are a high resolution (I play at 1600x1200) and AA/AF. High resolution plus AA makes it very easy to spot people.

For those who think the controls are clunky, I must agree that the defaults leave a lot to be desired. Here are some tips:

1. Bind iron sights to your middle mouse button.

2. Bind keys to TOGGLE crouch and prone instead of having to hold them down.

3. Only sprint when you are exposed to enemy fire, not while in the spawn or far from the frontlines. You can hit prone while sprinting to dive, which is extremely useful if someone starts shooting at you.

played this last night and this morning, i loved the realism and the game, but it just didnt appeal to me. im more of a 'shootemup' fps player and ill be much happer playing my bf2 and cs

great game though ;)

Thing is, it's not just the controls - one of my main problems with DoD:S was how silly it was in terms of, well, doing anything, and this is the same. It takes about 2-3 seconds to shoulder your weapon, which's isn't massively helpful, and everything just feels kind of agonising or obstructed. I'm not really buying the realism thing, there's a difference between making something truly realistic and making people move, shoot and aim slowly, die quickly and run like they were carrying their family, and merely calling it realistic because "that's how it was". The only realism I saw was in the vehicle driving with the wee port holes :(

i doesn't take 2-3 seconds to shoulder your gun, its more like 1/2 or 1 second.

and you can change the view in the tanks w/mousewheel up and down

Then as far as i'm concerned there's sod all realism, apparently. Everything just seems like a chore, you know? They've gone all-out trying to make it seem realistic at the expense of practicalities like being able to see people further than 15 feet away, or fun. I do seem to have joined servers with only 15 or so people in, though, which might explain why i'm finding myself standing in the middle of a field 5 minutes' run from the next person, who invariably TKs me :rolleyes:

I haven't found the realism to be a chore at all, unlike AA. It actually helps sometimes, like having you pull the bolt allows you to poke some shit with the bayonet. BTW, has anyone found a way to turn VOIP off? It's off in audio options but I still hear people. Why is that?

Alls I gots to say is this game blows my left (or right) _______! The controls were horrible and no crosshair sucks. Graphics are outdated as well. They aren't getting my money.

Lol @ crosshair nubs :p

The controls do stink.

You can remap the controls to your hearts content.

Here's how I have my controls setup:

w/s/a/d = usual movement directions.
Q = lean left
E = lean right
F = use key
V = Attach bayonet
B = change MG barrel
Z = prone
Shift = sprint
Ctrl = crouch
Alt = alt fire (bayo/buttsmack)
Space = jump
Mouse 1 = Fire
Mouse 2 = Iron sights
Mouse 3 (clicking the mouse wheel) = change fire mode
mouse wheel = weapon selection

It allows pretty much for you to do any action you need to do without moving your hand away from the movement key really.

Aswell, there's an option in the config file that allows you to make Iron sights work based on pressing and holding the button instead of "toggling" it if you prefer.

When I say the controls suck, I mean that the game feels clunky and is not very fluid...not that you dont have control over the key bindings...every FPS lets you change key bindings...that isnt the issue...

As far as being realistic when it comes to how many times you get shot before you die, this was kind of all over the place when I played. I was getting hit by alot of bullets when running across some more open areas and I had no idea how I was staying alive. In a game like CS or DoD, I would have been dead after all those bullets I took.

Honestly I dont care about how realistic the game is or isnt. If it's a chore moving around and just seems to generally lack the fun factor then its not for me. Personally Id have alot more fun with DoD:S despite its lack or realism.

Weird. It usually takes me about 4 chest shots to kill someone in CS with a gun like the MP5, and about 2 headshots to take out someone with armor. Never mind the fact that people in css are jumping around like idiots avoiding fire, wheras in RO that is alittle bit harder.

BTW, I hated the game for the first week that I had it. Playing more of it just got me hooked on it.

I'm going by what i saw, not by what they said. And what i saw was pitiful.
I played it at E3 and it wasn't god-awful at all. I also met with and spoke with several of the developers, all of whom were both very professional and very nice to talk to, with loads of information. This has been a good game even from back in the days when it was a UT2004 MOD.
