Dont know if this has allready been mentioned but Ive been getting framerate issue in FEAR after upgrading to an AM2 based system, Ive narrowed down my problem to the G5\G7 logitech mice, when these are plugged in framerates are hit 40-80% in the performance test. Plugging in my MX510 solves the issue, Iam now gona try several more games.

Note Iam getting the same problem in single and multi GPU modes on my 7900GTX's.

4200 X2 @2.60GHz
M2N32-SLI
2GB Corsair 6400C4
X-fi
PPC510 SLI

Latest official drivers, BIOS, updates etc... for all hardware.

3DMARK2005 and 2006 are hitting required scores by the way with the G5 and G7 mice

I have this same isse as well. I beleive the G15 keyboard also causes this problem.

If you run the in game test in FEAR, for some reason the Logitech G15 keyboard and G7 mouse cause the test to report performace off about 50% when those peripherals are not plugged in (I have both of these plugged into my sig rig). It seems to not to matter if the drivers are installed are not, just having those devices plug into the PC causes this problem.

However, to be honest, during actual game play, I have not noticed any difference with and without the Logitech hardware plugged in, so my guess is that is only an issue with how the FEAR performance test works, not with the game itself.

If you actually notice a slow down during actual game play pass it on, as I have not noticed the difference.

The issue is annoying, as I do still wonder if the G15 and G7 are causing performance problems, but I love both the G15 and G7, they are simply the best keyboard and mouse out right now, nothing else is as good, and as long as it doesn't really seem to be a problem other than the FEAR performance test, I'll live with the issue.

ive actually noticed that during fear benchmarks, i get an avg of like 30fps only during the benchmark but during actual gaming i get over 60fps in 90% of the game scenario's

It happens during gameplay also. FEAR should be running like warm butter on my system but instead it runs like cottage cheese.

Turn on you task manager or other CPU monitor and set your mouse to 2000DPI. Then wave it around like nobody's business. The 500Hz USB polling rate for the G5 makes it eat a lot of CPU cycles during heavy use.

OMG

i just tried that now and waving around my G7 makes it go to 11~21% WTF!
and my old corded MX300 is at 4~9%

would it be possible to offload this task to the 2nd core on dual core systems?

Logitech will need to go back to the drawing boards if they want to keep gamers interested.

I don't like performance loss when upgrading to higher end hardware... if this was some cheap $15 radioshack mouse, I'd expect it... but a G5/G7/G15?!

But is it really related to the hardware? for all we know is the USB port that needs more refinement.. since the mice/keyboard only sends the input data.

WOW! This is a major issue IMHO.

20% CPU utilization for a f'kn mouse is unacceptable! This issue hits close to home for me because my MS mouse at home needs replacing.....no way I'm spending $80 on a mouse that will eat FPS!

question:

if you decrease the dpi on the mouse does it fix the problem?

Another good reason to leave gaming mice to the experts (Razer) :D
I don't find them comfortable, unfortunately. I wish I did. So with Razer out, and Logitech looking iffy...I'm not sure what mouse to get.

I thougth i was going mad but now I see its not just me. Thanks OP, I can go off the Vicatin now :D

those new mice run the USB ports really fast.. I guess we're seeing some possible overhead issues, maybe? or just more bugginess in FEAR? I loved FEAR, but it was really buggy imo.. maybe it's better now? not sure.. but has anyone tested this with other games? I don't play FEAR any more, but I have not had any issues with my G7 and other games.. I guess I could run some tests with my old mx510 and see what the diff is.. hrm.

Are you sure? I noticed this issue many months ago and never found a resolution.

I did however play the bejesus out of FEAR, with and without the Logitech in a lot of the game, espcially towards the begining, and I just couldn't tell the difference try as I may. At the time I was running 7800 512 GTX's in SLI, and there just were any performance problems, and like only in one place during the game did I notice any kind of slow down, and area with a lot of glass. I went back and played it without the Logitech hardware and it play the same. On top of that, no other game seemed to exhitbit this behavior at all,

So yeah, there is overhead with this mouse and keyboard but to be honest, I have yet to identifiy eveb one actual game performance issue, but yes, it would be nice to get this resolved totally.

Once again, I must stress that the G15 and G7 are about the best mouse and keyboard out there. I normally wouldn't go through the hassel of testing a keyboard and mouse as thoroughly as I did these guys, but there simply are no replacements of their caliber out there right now, IMO, and I was willing to make VERY sure that there really wasn't no problem before I trashed them.

So Ingonuts13, you are saying that with the G15/G7 plugged in you are getting a noticeable in game performance hit that goes away when they are unplgged? I spend a lot of time looking into this and did not see that at all.

My specs were the same as the sig at the time I tested this, expcet like I said, I had 7800 512 GTX's in SLI and no BFG Ageia PhysX card.

performance is fine with my MX510, as soon as I oplug in my G5 boom down it go's straight even without exiting the current scene.

This problem never occured with my A8N32-SLI.

My 518 was perfect untill I installed the stupid "mouse driver" that came with it.

One OS install later, everything is fine... Who would have thought?

Similar here. I didn't install the mouse drivers for my MX700 cause they suck and they're unnecessary.

P.S. Why is this in the nvidia video card subforum?

Well, I run the SetPoint software with my G5 without issue, it makes the mouse a hell of a lot more useful when you can bind the buttons and set your DPI rates to a custom setting.

The CPU usage problem is something I noticed on my last rig (a p4) with the same mouse.

My Razer uses no noticable CPU operations.......Neither does my MX-900. Both hooked up on the same computer at the same time....

Even with my Razer Diamondback set to 500hz polling on the USB port, i don't use more than ~2% cpu when waving the mouse around wildly with task manager up. Why the fuck would it take tons of CPU time to .... think about this for a fucking second.... MOVE THE MOUSE.

broke hardware or drivers...lol

The only thing I can see is USB uses much more CPU overhead at times as opposed to firewire. If you have an external HDD, a transfer using USB might use around 20% CPU while a firewire transfer will only use 5% CPU. So, there may be something wierd about how Logitech is using the USB bus. Still though, this can't be right.

Definitely something wrong there. My MX518 doesn't use more than 6-7% when "flailing wildly" @ 500Hz with SetPoint/UberOptions installed.

I have a G15 keyboard, and G5 laser mouse. I do this, and my CPU Utilization barely hits 8%.

I am curious if you guys have downloaded the mouse firmware update on logitechs site.

this is a new G5, the firmware f**ked up my previous G5, the left button wouldnt hold or respond while moving the mouse.

I've got a cheap piece of shit 2-button 'n wheel damn-near-zero dpi logitech mouse...now you guys got me wonderin'..... :p

That mouse could use a lot of bandwidth on its max settings, you should be able to go into the Logitech Control Panel and turn the resolution down. For the most part, it should improve performance.
As for the keyboard, well I guess it may have something to do with the software polling the keyboard, especiall detecting if a macro button has been pushed. If it takes time and CPU cycles to execute a macro, that might also impact on it. As for how that would slow performance down on a time demo where no keys are pressed... I dunno.

My Logtiech Rechargeable Wireless Keyboard and Mouse doesn't inmpact on performance (I beleive). Having said that, I dumped the set point software a long time ago, so I don't know if that makes any difference in other cases.

alright, so we've settled it. Everyone go buy Razer's now!!!

We haven't settled anything. My Logitech mouse and keyboard barely cause the CPU utilization to go above 8%.

I think there is more going on here than just a mouse causing this.

Ok heres something interesting.. i ran the fear benchmark and moved the mouse around randomly ( using the G7 ) after that reboot and removed the G7 on my system and installed my old MX500 and ran the benchmark again with moving the mouse around.. no performance difference.. i know theres no visible cursur but im sure the USB port is processing the sent information

I've been running the updated firmware since day one, I think it has more to do with motherboard USB CPU overhead and, of course, your processor speed. Your 8% might correspond to my 20% on my 3800+ when I tested it last.
