Friend's laptop has Norton Internet Security. Randomly the computer decided that secure websites would no longer load. IE shows it is still transmitting at 128bit. I'm 95% norton is to blame on this one. I tried to disable it, but it tells me i don't have the rights to do that. I tried to log on as a supervisor, but NO names, AT ALL show up in the drop down menu. I can't manually put in the 'Supervisor' name or anything. I'd really prefer not to uninstall it because it has more than a month left of paid service. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Please? I'm not an idiot, but short of uninstalling it, i'm stumped. Then when I try to switch to the 'antivirus' part off it, it tells me it isn't installed! VERY weird. HELP!

Please don't use words like "hell" in thread titles here.

Remove it pronto, Im suprised you got 11 months into a 12 month subsricption before having problems !

Sorry about the title, wasn't thinking.

Yeah, I hate Norton, with a passion. I use Symantec's corporate virus scanner that I got free from my school, but that gives me about zero problems. The NIS has given her problems before. I had a little duel with it a few months back (maybe 6) when i had to remove some malware from the machine and Norton wanted to have its way....

The selective page DNS error is ridiculously annoying. For instance, you can get to a bank site, but not login. Get to google, but not gmail. School web based e-mail? Forget it.

Removing it would be my way to go too, but I was going to try to save her month of subscription... :/

The most ironic part about this, atleast to me, is that they sell this type of software to help non-technical or knowledgeable people keep their computers (supposedly) running smooth. But, what causes 90% of the software related problems I see? The software meant to prevent said problems. Don't use the software, avoid the problems. I don't use this kind of stuff and I have near zero problems with my machine. Well, I DO, but they're usually MY fault somehow, not something random that just 'starts' one day.

I've used Norton IS 2003 and 2005 and never had an issue. What are you guys smoking?

NIS is a resource hog. Once I removed it I noticed a BIG difference in statup time. I now use Antivir and Zone Alarm. Much happier than before.

ive seen quite a few issues resulting from NIS being installed on a machine. I would download the norton removal tool "SymNRT" and run that to remove it and any traces it may leave behind.

is pure, utter evil. Remove it. NOW. You would not believe all the problems i've seen that POS crapware do to even the newest of machines for my clients.

I second SymNRT..when you uninstall those symantec bloated pigs..use the removal tools to get "more (but never all)" of the remnants the windows installer/uninstaller service leaves behind.

I'd also run a tcp/winsock rebuild utility

If you insist on running a bi-directional software firewall....use Comodo, or Kerio. Or get Kaperskys internet suite...that way you have one of the best antivirus programs..and a decent software firewall. Stay away from Zonealarm..it's almost as bad as Symantec.

I Agree, use Norton's removal tools after you have ran norton's uninstaller, to make sure everything is gone, than go out and get AVG Free or Nod32 if you want to pay for one.
AVG= free.grisoft.com
Nod32= www.eset.com

Thanks guys...Uninstalling may be a bit more complicated than thought. See, i can't disable it because the account names within it have dissapeared. There is no uninstall option in its program files folder. All i can do at this point is try to uninstall it through the 'add/remove programs' option. Failing that, safe mode. Failing that, just deleting the folder while in safe mode then running that removal tool they have. :/
